Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VINCENZO BADAGLIACCA, OF NEW YORK, N. Y. PROCESS OF ORNAMENTING SURFACES WITH GRANULAR SUBSTANCES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Au 28, 1906.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VINCENZO BADAG- LIACCA, a subject of the King of Italy, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Process of Ornamenting Surfaceswith Granular Substances, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to the process employed in ornamenting surfaces with granular substances in layers of designs and applying coloring-matter to the thusornamented surface, and has for its object to render the process more expeditious and less costly.
The granular substances used in the process may beof various kinds-such as very small stones, pebbles, fine gravel, coarse or 2 o fine sand, or the likeand the coloring-matter may preferably be dry color in its various forms, either powder or leaf or otherwise. When powder colors are used, an atomizer may conveniently be employed in putting it on.
In the art it is customary to first apply a coat of suitable adhesive to the surface to be ornamented; secondly, to lay on a layer of the granular substance used for ornamentation, then to apply a second coat of adhesive, and finally to a ply the coloring-matter. In case several layers or designs are to be executed it is of course necessary to coat each layer with the adhesive before the succeeding layer is put on, and this is of course a laborious and slow Way of proceeding, particularly in the execution of designs comprising flowers, scrollwork, or the like. Finally a coat of adhesive must always be ap lied to the finished surface before the dry colbr is put on. In order to obviate the difficulties of this manner of proceeding and also to make it 1 possible for the Workman to form the ornamenting material in fine designs finished to a nicety, I propose to mix the ornamenting I granular substances With a slow-drying adhesive and employ the thus-formed mixture for the execution of theornaments. Any suitable glue or mucilage may be used as slow-drying adhesive. The advantages of employing this mixture are apparent, as the slo'w-dryin adhesive keeps the material in a moist con ition for a considerable time. I have thus at once produced an ornamental material which in itself presents an adhesive surface for the application of the coloring-matter after the said ornamental material has been applied to the surface to be ornamented. Moreover, the artist having but one materialto wit, the mixture-to work with can direct his whole attention to the execution of the design or the laying 011 of the material in a smooth layer without being compelled to ut on the. adhesive for the formation of the esign, and by applying the coloring-matter by means of an atomizer the danger of disturbing the design by the strokes of the brush is obviated.
What I claim is I,
The herein-described process of ornamenting surfaces, which consists in mixing a slowdrying adhesive with a granular substance before applying the adhesive to the surface, then applying the mixture in a moist state to the surface to be ornamented, and finally applying a dry coloring to the mixture wh1 e the latter is still moist.
Signed at New York city this 22d day of July, 1905.
VINCENZO BADAGLIACCA.
