13c it known that I, WILLIAM GENTRY SnEL'roN, a citizen of the United States, formerly residing at the city of St. Louis, in the 5 State of Missouri, now residing at the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Massage Instrument, of which thefollowing is such a full, clear, and exact descrip tion as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specificationf i I My invention relates to massage instruments, and more particularly to improvements in' that form of instrument shown and described in application, Serial N 0. 253,551, filed byme April 3, 1905.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate an instrument made in accordance with my invention, Figure 1 is a side view, partly in elevation and partly in section. Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views showing details of construction. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view showing a slight modification. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 4, and Fig. 7 is an enlarged view of the handle and dial for controlling the movement of the contact device.

10 represents the handle, by means of which the instrument is manipulated. Carof an inner part or frame 11 and an outer part or shell 12. Carried by the casing is the electric motor, consisting of a field 14 and an armature 15.
16 is the commutator of the motor,and 17 the brushes. Current is carried to the motor through a flexible conductor 18. This flexible conductor 18 contains two wires 19 and 20. The wire 19 leads to the motor, and the wire 20 returns the current from the motor. The flow of current through the motor is controlled by a switch connected to the wire 20. Onepart of the wire 20 is secured to a i'fixed' terminal 21 and the other to a 1 iovable terminal 22. The movable terminal 22 is provided with a finger-pieceb23, projecting out of the handle 10, so that by operating the finger-piece 23 the terminals 22 and ri ed by the handle 10 is the casing, consisting 21 can be brought together to complete the circuit through the motor.
Mounted on the shaft 25 of the armature 15 is a fly-wheel 26. In the form .of device shown in Fig. 1 this fly-wheel 26 is mounted so as to be movable longitudinally of the shaft 25, but to be incapable of rotation independently thereof. In order to move the fly-wheel 26 along the shaft 25, I provide a rod 27, having a bifurcated end 28, which engages with a grooved collar 29 on the flywheel 26. The end of the rod 27 is threaded and passes through a nut 30. This nut 30 is. provided with an 31, having a handle 32. The arm 31 moves adjacent to a dial 33, which secured to the handle 10 by means of screws 34 or in any other suitable manner. The nut 30 is provided with a flange 35 at the rear of the dial 33, so as to prevent longitudinal movement of the nut. It is evident that by turning the arm 31 by means of the handle 32 the rod 27 would be moved longitudi: nally, so as to move the fly-wheel 26 along the shaft 25. The fly-wheel 26 is provided on its 'face with a projection 36, in which is formed an inclined radial slot 37? In this slot 37 is a ball 38,forwhich said slot forms a guideway oblique to the axis of rotation of the fly-wheel 26. The ball 38 is rotatably mounted on a stud 39, carried by a connecting-rod 40. I On the rod 40 is a ball 41, which is arranged in a seat 42, formed in the outer end of the casing 12. Only half of the seat is formed in the casing 12, however, the other half being formed in a washer 44. This washer 44 is held in place by means of a spring 45 and screw-cap 46; This spring takes up the wear of the parts 41 and 42 andprevents the ball 41 from rattling. In order to prevent the shaft 40 from rotating-I pro--- vide the ball 41 with a pin 47, which works in an enlarged opening 48, so as to allow the shaft 40 to have a translatory movement, but to prevent its rotation. On the end'of the shaft 40 and at a point a substantially fixed distance from the universal joint composed of parts 41, 42, and 44, above described, is a massage-cup '50 or any other suitable contact member or device. It will be seen that by rotating the, handle 32, and consequently I slot 37. ,ln order to keep the ball in its proper position, I providein the bottom of the slol 37 a spring 51 and place between the spring and the ball an oil-pad 52;. Oil may be supplied to the pad 52 through an oil-duet :33. (Shown in Fig. 3.)
In the modification shown in Figs. 4, 5, ant (i the ball-and-socket joint for the rod 40 in place of being made in the end of the casing 12 is made in a tube 55, which slides into the end of said casing. 111 the end of the casing 1'. is a slot 56, part of which is inclined, as shown at 57. Passing around the end of the casing is a ring 58, provided with lugs 59 and (it). is a thumb screw which passes through the lug 5t! and is threaded into the lug 60. Between the lugs :39 aml 60 is a member 61, carrying a pin (52, which passes through the slot 5c and into an opening 63 in the tube 55. By moving the pin 02 in the inclined part 57 ot' the slot 56 it will be evident that the tube .35 will be moved longitudinally, and. this will have the same i tl'ect upon the connection between the rod at) and the ily-wheel 26 as by moving the wheel, as described above. \Vhen the tube 55 has been moved to the desired position, the parts can be clamped by tightening the thumb-screw 65.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent of the United States, is-
l. The cmnbination with a frame, of a retary member carried thereby, a contact memher, and adjui table operating means between said members, said operating means making sliding connection with one of said members and comprising a part of a pivotal joint one part of which jointis normally stationary on said frame and the other connected with said contact member at a point fixed relatively to said contact member and also normally connected at a fixed point to said frame, one of said members being movable toward and away from the other to adjust said sliding connection.
2. The combination with a frame, of a rotary member carried thereby, a contact member, an-adjustable operating means between said members, said operating means making sliding connection with said rotary member and comp rising a part of a pivotal joint one part of which joint is normally stationary on said frame and the other connected with said contact member at a point fixed relatively to said contact member and also normally connected at a fixed point to said frame, one ol said members being movable toward and away from the other to adjust said sliding connection. 3. 16. In a massage instrument, the combi nation with a motor, of a rotaryinember provided with a radial slot, a contact device, op-
crating connections between said contact device and rotary member and engaging with the slot in the latter, and means for adjusting said rotary member to cause said connections to adjust in said slot.
17. In a massage instrument, the combination with a motor, of a rotary member provided witli a radial slot, a spring. in said slot, a contact device, and operating connections between said contact device and said rotary member and engaging with the slot in the latter.
