WAGON PLATFORM GEAR. APPLICATION FILED JAN. 5, 1906.
WILLIAM F. HINDENACH,
PATENT orrron.
OF MARSHALL, MICHIGAN.
WAGON PLATFORM-GEAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 28, 1906.
Application filed January 5, 1906. 7 Serial No. 294,737.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. HINDE- NACH, a citizen of'the United States, residing at Marshall, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inWagon Platform- Gears; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wagon platformgearing; and the chief object of the same is to provide such gearing in which the truss-rods are positively locked to the head-block and to facilitate the regulating of the tension at will.
To these ends my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a wagon platform-gearing embodying my invention. Fig. 2, is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of my truss-rods. Fig. 4 is an end view of said platform-gearing. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views of the head-block.
A designates the center bar of my platform-gearing; B B, the outside bars or futchells; C, the front cross-bar, secured to the front ends of the futchells and the center bar; D, the center cross-bar, secured to the under sides of the futchells and center bar at about their middle, and E the circle-bar supported by the center bar and center cross-b ar.
F designates my new and improved headblock, preferably cast in a single piece, adapted to receive the rear ends of the center bar, the futchells, and the truss-rods. Said headblock is provided with a top plate f, side plates f, back plate f bottom plate f and cleats f said cleats being in the same plane as the said bottom plate, but placed at the front ends of side plates f. These plates and cleats partially inclose a rearwardly-converging quadrilateral space which receives the rear ends of the center bar A and the futchells B B and holds the same together. To increase the efficiency of this part of the head-block, bolts n are passed through holes n in the top plate and cleats and in the top plate and bottom plate and positively lock rods, and with a longitudinal tapering groove X leading to the same.
My truss-rods G G are of a new and improved construction especially adapted to be used with the above-described head-block.
and form a rod X, the screw-threaded end of which passes through the head-block and is held by a nut r, bearing against the back plate of the same. From their said point of union the truss-rods are carried divergingly forward beneath the center cross-bar D, and their forward ends are fastened in any convenient manner to the front cross-bar C.
By means of the above-described trussbars and head-block my device not only holds the rear ends of the futchells and center bar together, as well as the common rear end of the truss-rods, but provides means for adjusting the tension-of the latter at will, said means being the nut :20, bearing on the back plate of the head-block.
The form of futchells, center bar, front cross-bar, center cross-bar, and circle-bar as a frame for this kind of a gearing is old. My improvement lies in my novel construction of the head-block and truss-rods whereby the whole frame is closely united, and the tension of the truss-rods may be increased or decreased by turning but one nut. Heretofore it has been necessary to tighten or loosen at least two nuts, one on the end of each trussrod. Usually the truss rods have been bolted to the frame at the rear end; but this weakens them by removing part of their material. To obviate this weakening, others have sought to use a single truss-rod bent around a projectionon top of the headblock; but such a construction does not securely hold the loop or bend at the rear end and is necessarily difficult to adjust or to remove. My construction holds the truss-rods positively locked and admits of instant detach ment at will by unscrewing the nut 00.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1; In a wagon platform-gearing a metallic head-block in combination with a rod formed by the union of two converging truss-rods near the rear of said platform and in proximity to said head-block, passing through the same and adapted to be locked to the back plate thereof substantially as set forth.
2. In wagon platform-gearing, a metallic head-block combining means for holding the The said truss-rods unite at their rear ends rear ends of the futchells and center bar and of holding and adjusting the tension of the truss-bars the latter consisting of two converging bars uniting at the rear of the platform 1 1n a slngle bar which extends through said head-block substantially as set forth.
3. In a wagon platform-gearing two converging truss-rods united at their rear ends in proximity to the head-block in combination with the said head-block means for securing their forward ends to the front cross-bar and a nut for regulating their tension-bearing against the back plate of the said head-block substantially as set forth.
4. A metallic head-block provided with a top plate side plates f, back plate f bottom plate f cleats f a longitudinal groove X and a socket X for the pur ose set forth.
5. A pair of truss-rods unite at their rear ends and a head-block receiving the rod formed by their union in combination with means, bearing on the back plate of said head block, for locking said truss-rods and regulating their tension, the point ofunion of said rods being in proximity to the head-block which is at the rear of the platform substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. In wagon platform-gearing, the combination of the center bar A, futchells B B,
front cross-bar C, center cross-bar D, circlebar E, head-block F and the truss-rods G G the front ends of which are fastened to the front cross-bar C and the common rear end of which is passed through a socket in the top of the said head-block and secured thereto by a nut 90, which bears against the back plate thereof the said head-block being at the rear of the platform and the said rods uniting immediately in front thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM F. HINDENACH.
