To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ELMER GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at North East, in the county of Erie and State of Penn sylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Pans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specifi cation.

My invention relates to im rovements in dust-pans, and has for its 0 ject the construction of a covered dust-pan of a single piece of sheet metal and the construction of a andle of spring-wire, so that the parts there of will spring apart and friotionally engage an eye on the brace operating thereon, so as to retain the brace at any desired point thereon without the necessity of stops or catches.

The features of my invention are hereinafter set forth and explained and are illus trated in the accompanying drawings, in WlllGh- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved dust-pan. Fig. 2 is a lan view of a sheet of metal preparatory to f drming up the body of my improved dust-pan. Fig. 3 is a side view of the dust-pan suspended by the handle thereof.

In the construction of my improved dustpan I take a sheet of metal and cut it to substantially the shape of the sheet A, Fig. 2, with openings at a therein and also handleopenings (1 a. The parts A and A are then bent upward on the lines a at right angles with the plane of the sheet A, after which the sheet A is bent transversely on the line a so as to bring the part A of the sheet A up over the remainder of the sheet A, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The corners a a of the parts A A are then bent inward through the openings a a in the parts A and clenched,

which firmly secures them together, so as to form the bottom, sides, rear end, and cover of the dust-pan complete and ready for the handle thereof.

The handle of the dust-pan I make of spring-wire, the upper end thereof being formed into a loop or ring B, below which the wires are twisted together at 6. Below the point I) the wires 1; b gradually spread apart until near the center of the handle, from which point they gradually approach each other until the point b, where they are again twisted together, and from that point the wires are spread apart, so as to pivot in the openings a a in the sides A A of the dustan. p It is obvious that the handle between the points 6 and b is thus formed into an elliptical spring, over which the ring d on the brace D operates, the brace D bein pivoted to the cover A of the dust-pan in t. e usual manner.

In operation the ring d of the brace D operating over the spring portion of the handle is held by the s ring action thereof within the loop (Z at any dhsired point thereon, so as to retain the handle at any angle desired.

I have thus shown and described my invention, so as to enable others to construct and use the same.

The combination of a covered dust-pan, a handle pivoted to the front portion of the dust-pan, the stem of which is an elliptical spring, a brace pivoted to the cover of the dust-pan at the rear of the handle, and a ring on said brace embracing and operatin over the spring portion of said handle, su stantially as set forth. 85
