To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WINSLOW P. EAYRS, of Hudson, in the county of Hillsboro and State of N ew Hampshire, have invented oer 5 tain new and useful Improvements in Carbon Products and Methods of Making the Same, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to such carbon prod ucts as brushes and contacts adapted for elec- IO trical purposes. It aims to provide an effective composition for and method of making and producing therefrom the desired articles.
The drawing illustrates a brush made in accordance with my invention.
My improved composition consists of finely-reduced carbon freed from gritty or vitreous constituents which may be present in the crude element and with which is mixed 2o reduced soapstone similarly separated and some such binder or adhesive solution as ricewater. The proportions of the first two ingredients are such as to give the desired conductivity and freedom from friction, the lat- 2 5 ter being most essential if the composition is to be used for brushes contacting with the commutators of electrical apparatus and in similar connections. A sufficient amount of rice-water is added to secure a paste of the proper consistency for molding.
In making articles from this com ositionI first deliver the crude carbon to a pu verizingmachine of any suitable type, but referably to one in which the material is su jected to the action of a gaseous fluidfor example, a
current of air created by the pulverizing agencies. As the carbon is reduced the finer purer portion rises by virtue of its lesser grav- 1ty and settles outside the pulverizing-recepo tacle on a suitable surface from which it may be readily collected. The coarser heavier impurities remain in the pulverizer for removal when desired. Soa stone is similarly reduced and separated and the finer portion mixed with an amount ofcarbon and the ricewater, determined-, as previously stated, to furnish a pastem This is then molded or pressed in the customary way.
When the article producedfor exam lo, the brush A-reqmres it, it ma be'coate in whole or in part, as is indicate at a, by plating with copper by electrodeposition. The covering thus formed adheres firmly to the article and insures perfect contact between it and its holder.
By my improved process aproduct is secured at a minimum cost which is free from abrasive particles, which operates smoothly under frictional contact, and which is dense and resistive of fracture.
Having thus explained the nature of my invention, claim- 1. The method of making articles of carbon, which consists in pulverizing the carbon, subjecting it to the action of a fluid current to separate the lighter portion, mixing this lighter portion with rice-water, and molding the mixture into the desired form.
2. The method of making articles of carbon, which consists in pulverizing the carbon and soapstone, subjecting each to the action of a fluid current to separate the lighter portions, mixing said lighter portions with an adhesive, and molding the mixture into the desired form.
3. The method of Inakin articles of carbon, which consists in pu verizing carbon and soapstone, subjecting each to the action of a fluid current to separate the lighter portions, mixing said lighter portions with ricewater, and molding the mlxture into the desired form.
