Be it known that I, AUGUST RIPPE, a citi- States, residin at Salt Lake City, inthe county of Salt lake and State of Utah, have invented certain -new and useful Improvements in Awnin s; and I do declare 'the following to be afu l, clear, and enact description of the invention, such as it appertainsto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompan ing drawto the characters o reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. v

This invention relates to awnings, more particularly t means for raising and lowering the same', and the objects -of the invention are to improvethe construction of such devices and increase their eflicienc with simplicity of parts and cheapness o vmanufacture;

The sides or flangesv of the operating-reel 1 B are provided with holes q'around the outer` edge of the sides'. Opposite the holes is a slotr in the front-plate D through whic -can be passed a pin or padlock for locking the operating-reel B in any desired position. Thus it is seen that the awning'can be raised or lowered to any reuired position and then locked. `The end o the rope d is preferably fastened on-the roller, as in the reel, by means of the staple or wire C, which passes through the center of the reel.

Fig. 2 shows the operating-.reel underneath the reel on the roller, the same being locked by means ofthe padlock 12. A pin can be used instead of the lock to adjust the awning.

The o erating-reel B can be easily re,- moved om the crank-box, and different sizes of reels can be substituted for differentsize awnings. The operating-reel, with crankbox, consists of only .three pieces-namely,

The back plate C can be ut in place without any part of the cran -box interfering with the same being put in place.

I claim, and desire to obtain by Letters I Patent, the following:

1. In an awning, a back plate' secured directly 'to the sideof a building, a horizontally-extending portion near the boBttom of said back plate, two triangularshaped brackets sup orting said extending portlon, an angular-s aped front plate attached to said extending portion, a reel supported by said back and front plates-in bearings thereon, and a crank removably attached to the reel for operating the same.

2. In anawning, a back late secured directly to the side of abuil ing, a longitudinally-extending portlon near `the bottom thereof, two 'triangular-shaped brackets supporting said extending portion andmade integral therewith, van an ular-shaped front plate removably attache to said extendin prortion, a reel supported by said back an ont plates in bearings thereon, and .a slot in said front plate cooperating with holes in the periphery of the reel affording means for ocklng the same in any desired position.
