Heretofore in this class of machines there are usually ten digit-keys, numbered from i to 9," inclusive;v and also containing the zerocharacter, which cooperate with one of a series of ten stops in a traveling carriage, there being as many series of stops (ten in each series) as required for the ca acity of the machine. A spring 20 exerts pressure upon the bar 19 tending to move the same rearwardly at all times. The forward edge of the bar-19 is provided with a series of ratchet-teeth which co operate with aawl 21, pivoted in a post 22, extending up cm the base and having a spring 23 connected to its forward end, tend mg to hold' the rear end of the pawl in enagcment with the teeth of the bar 19. The orward end of pawl 21 carries a cross-bar 24, which is arranged across the stop-carrying levers13,:and also a lateral rejection 24", whioh'extends under the paw 18.

as shown in Fig. 2, one of the stops 14, in this instance the stop controlled by the zero-key 0, will be elevated and in so doing, by means of the lateral projection 24', raise the pawl 18 into en agcment with the forward tooth on the s idmg' member 15 and by means of the bar 24 depress the rear end of pawl 21 out of engagement with the rear teeth of the bar 19, permitting said bar to move rearwardly under the im elling action of its spring and carry with it the sliding member 15 until the projection 16 is arrested by the elevated stop 14. The depression of any of the key-shanks 12 o crates a bar arranged under the lower en s thereof carried by a bell-crank lever 25. This bell-crank lever is connected by a rod 26 to a lever 27, attached to a part of the esca ement mechanism, so that whenever one o the zero-keys is depressed and previous to the commencement of the movement of bar 19 rearwardly to a position determined by one of the stops 14 the escapement mechanism is disengaged, so as to permit travel of the cross-carriage independently of the control of said esca ement mechanism. This is accomplished by making the side members of the yoke 8 in sections, one of which, 8, upon which the escapement mechanism is mounted, is capable of slidin movement with respect to the hinged portion of the yoke-frame by means of a slot-andin connection, as shown in the drawings. The light s ring tends to assist the return of the movab c section of the yoke member carrying the escapement mec anism to norma position when the zero-key is eleased.
A continuation 26 of the rod 26 is connected to a bell-crank lever 28, whose other member is connected by a link 29 to the hub of a inion 30, slidable in a vertical direction on t e shaft 31. Meshing with this pinion and fixed on the shaft 11, on which the segmental gear 11 is mounted, is a segmental gear 32.
In the ordinary operation of the machine, whenever one o the numeral digit-keys is depressed, the segmental gears 11 and 32 are actuated, but the pinion 30, in its lowermost position, is rotated idlv. When, however, the pinion is raised by the depression of one of the zero-keys, it is thrown into mesh with rack-teeth 33 on the rear end of bar 19, so that the rearward movement of the bar will rotate the pinion 30, which is constantly in mesh with the segmental rack 32 irrespective of the position of the crosscarriage, and through t m segmental rack 11 move the cross-carriage along its track until the bar 10 is arrested.
