To all whom it may concern.-

' Be it known that I, GEORGE O. POWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Poplar Bluff, in the county of Butler and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Churn, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to churns, and has for its object to provide a comparatively simple and inexpensive device of this character having a removable cap or cover on which is detachably mounted the operatin mechanism, so that the several parts may be readily detached from the body of the churn when it is desired to clean the latter.

A further object of the invention is to gen- "erally improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability, and efliciency, as well as to reduce the cost of manufacture.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions, and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a churn-operating mechanism constructed in accordance with my in vention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the uprights or guides detached. Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view of the uprights. Fig. 4 is a similar view. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a portion of one of the dasher-rods. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the cover detached.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.

The improved churn comprises a receptacle 5, provided with a detachable cap or cover 6, the latter being provided with a depending flange 7, adapted to engage the interior walls of the receptacle, as shown. Detachably secured to the cover 6 are spaced uprights 8 and 9, connected by transverse pins 10 and provided with longitudinal grooves 11, in which are mounted for vertical movement re ciprocating guide-blocks 12. Secured to the uprights 8 and 9 is a cap-piece 13, and depending from the bottom of the cap 13 is a pulley or roller 14, over which passes a suspension- Mounted for vertical movement" tend through spaced openings or apertures 19 in the cover or closure 6. for attachment to the guide-blocks 12. The upper ends of the rods 18 are bifurcated for the reception of plates 19', provided with transverse slots 20, opening through one longitudinal edge of the plates and adapted to engage clamping pins or lugs 21, extending laterally from the guide-blocks 12. The plates 19 are detachably secured to the guide-blocks 12 by means of wing-nuts 22 engaging the threaded ends of the pins 21, so that by releasing the nuts '22 and moving the dasher laterally the same may bereadily detached from the blocks. The walls of the openings 19 are preferably countersunk, as indicated at 23, to form depressions or cups for the reception of the milk or cream adhering to the rods 18 as the latter are reciprocated within the receptacle, so as to prevent the milk from flowing over the top of the cover or down the sides of the churnbody. Secured to the cover 6 is a block 24, having a recess formed therein and across which extends a loop or bar 25, adapted to engage a hook 26, secured to the lower end of the upright 9. Pivotally mounted at 27 on the upright 8 is a locking-lever 28, provided with an angular extension 29, having a slot 30 formed in the free end thereof for engagement with a pin or screw 31, secured to the cover, said screw being provided with a clamping-nut 32 for locking the angular extension to said cover. The free end of the handle 28 is preferably bent laterally, as shown, to form a finger-piece 33, whereby the lever may be conveniently moved to operative and inoperative position.

As a means for operating the dashers the blocks 12 are provided with laterally-extending handles 34, while extending vertically from the top of the cover 6 is a lug or projection 35, adapted to engage a correspondingly shaped opening formed in the upright 8 to assist in preventing lateral movement of said uprights.

When it is desired'to clean the churn, the locking member 28 is moved laterally out of engagement with the screw 31, after which the dashers are removed by loosening the clamping-nuts 22 and the hook 26 withdrawn from the loop or cover 25, thus disconnecting the several parts and permitting the same to be conveniently washed or cleaned.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that there is provided an extremely simple; inexpensive, and efficient device admiraly adapted for the attainment of the ends in view.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A churn having a detachable cover and p'rovided with spaced vertical openings the walls of which are-countersunk, a loop secured to one side of the cover, a threaded lug secured to the opposite side of the cover, spaced uprights mounted on the cover, slides mounted between the u rights, a flexible connection between the s ides, dashers passing through the openings in the cover and detachably secured to the slides, a hook secured to one of the u rights for engagement with the loop, a latc pivotally mounted on the opposite upright and provided with an angular extension having a slot formed in one edge thereof for engagement with the threaded lug, and a nut engaging said lug for looking the latch in operative position.

2. A churn having a removable cover and provided with spaced openings the walls of which are countersunk, a recessed block secured to one side of the cover, a loop extending laterally across the recess in the block, a threaded lug secured to the opposite side of the cover, spaced uprights mounted on the cover, a hook secured to one of the uprights and adapted to engage the loop at said recess, a latch pivotally mounted on the opposite upright and having one end thereof provided with a handle and its opposite end bent laterally and provided at one edge with an opening adapted to receive the threaded lug, a clamping-screw engaging the threads on the lug for locking the latch in operative position, a pin extending vertically from the cover and adapted to engage an opening in one of the uprights, slides mounted for vertical movement between the uprights and provi ded with laterally-extending handles, a flexible connection between the slides, and dashers passing through the openings in the cover and detachably secured to said slides.
