Specification of Letters Patent.

To atl whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAoon BRAUCIILI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ham ton, in the county of Elizabeth City and tate of Vir inia, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in T and Angie Squares, of which the following is a specication.
Measuring instruments of the type for lay ing ofi angles and embodying two legs have a limited application as generally constructed. It is the purpose of this invention to devise a T and angle square of novel structure, being desi ned more especially as an improvement on t e instrument for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted to me January 6, 1903, No. 717,534.
The purpose of the invention is to supply a T-square which can be used with either side restlng upon the surface, thereb Y enabling the laying off of any angle and t e complement of said angle by simply reversingr the instrument, the straight-edge of the head bein .laced against a shoulder or the edge 'of a tai e or board or made to coincide with a right line in each position of the square.
A further purpose of the invention is to combine with the head of a T-square stops for leveling the instrument and to provide abutments to engage with a shoulder or the edge of a table or drawing-board when the square is used in reversed position, said sto s being adjustable transversely or at a right angle to the plane ofthe instrument and directed in their several adjustments by suitable guides and adapted to be secured 1n the red quired position, according to the particular use of t e square.
The invention also contemplates other improvements, which will ap )car from the appended description-and the accompanying drawings, in which corresponding and like parts are referred to and indicated by the same reference characters.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accomwpanying drawings.

Fig. 6 is a de tail view of' the outer edge portion of the arc, slimving the graduations thereon and the pointer cooperating therewith to properly position the blade.
The instrument comprises a head 1 and a blade 2, the latter having pivotal connection with. the head, so as to be adjusted to any desired angle. The head comprises a straightedge 3 and an are 4, which ma f be graduated in any accustomed way to admit of the instrument being used as a protractor, it so desired, or thc blade 2 moved to any of the usual angles and secured in any adjusted position by ready fastening means, which in the present instance consist of a spring-tongue 5, iaving a projection 6 and a series of openings or recesses 7, formed in the side of the part 4 adj aeent to the tongue 5 to receive the projection 6. The openings or recesses 7 are located upon the arc at points corresponding with the usual angles-thirty degrees, fortyfive degrees, sixty degrees, and ninety degrees. When it is required to adust the movable blade 2 to any of the usual angles, the free end of the spring-tongue 5 is moved away from the are a distance to withdraw the projection 6 from engagement with an of the openings or recesses 7, and after the blitde has reached the desired position it is held fast by entrance of the projection 6 into the corresponding opening or recess 7. When it is required to adjust the blade to an angular position intermediate or beyon the usual angles, it is necessary to have recourse to other securing means for fastening the blade in the adjusted position.. of the head, said sleeve having the end adjacent to the blade enlarged and beveled. To prevent turning of the post when tightening the thumb-nut J thereon, a portion 1 1 thereof at the base of the threaded end is iiattened to snugl r lit within an elongated opening 12 of a was 1er 13, the latter having a tongue 1,4 iitted into a recess 15 at one side of the opening, in which the sleeve 1.() and washer 13 are fitted. The are 4 may be graduated in any manner to admit of the desired angle being readily determined, and by preference the said graduations are formed on the outer edge of the arc, and a pointer or indicator 1G cooperates therewith and is attached to the projecting end of the spring-tongue 5.
It will be noticed that the upper side of the blade 2 is unobstructed. Hence, when rcquired, the instrument may be reversed and placed upon the work with the head occupying the uppermost position. To prevent rocking of the instrument, stops -17 are fitted to the projecting ends of the straight-edge 3, said stops being adjustable transverselyv o1' the head or in a direction at a right angle to the plane of the instrument. The stops may be adj usted to have the ends on the same side with the blade 2 terminate in a plane touching the face of said blade, with the result that,
the instrument when placed upon a plain surface is prevented from any rocking movement. The stops may also be ad'usted to project beyond the plane of the bla( e 2, so as to engage with a shoulder or the edge of a drawing-board or table to properly position the instrument when used in this capacity for marking right lines from a given edge or shoulder a ainst which the head is usually placed to dgeterlnine the relative position of the blade 2. The adjustment of the stops is of advantage in that it provides for regulating the degree of projection aceordin to the depth of the shoulder against which t e head may be placed. The stops are adjustable in right lines and are directed in their movements by suitable guides, which in the present instance are formed by recesses 18, formed in the straight-edge of the head. Transverse slots 19 are provided and in the straight-edge of the head to receive the fastening-bolts 20, by means of which the sto s 17 are held in place, and which also provi e for movement of the fastening 20 incident to adjustment of the stops. The fastenings 20 consist of screws upon the threaded ends of which are mounted thumb-nuts 21, the straight-edge being clamped between the thumb-nuts and the sto s when the latter are made fast. Lateral o sets 22 are provided at one end of the sto s 17 and overlap the straight-edge 3 and limit the movement of the stops in one direction. The oifsets 22 perform the dual oflice of rests and stops to fix the position of the parts 17. The offsets 22 engage with the straight-edge 3)' on the side opposite to that jnovided with the slots 19. llence should the ifastenings 2() be loose there is no likelihood of the stops becoming displaced or lost, since the offsets 22 prevent n'iovement of the stops in one direction and the fastenings 2() limit their movement in the opposite direction. The stops 1T are let in to the straight-edge 3 so as to come llush with the outer face thereof, thereby preventing any interference with the ordinary use of the instrument.
lt will bc understood from the foregoing that the instrument may be used with. either face or side uppermost, which is of material advantage in an instrument of the character aforesaid. It will be further noticed that the movable blade may be adjusted to any of the usual angles or to any intermediate or eXterior position thereof and the reversibility of the square provides for accurately drawing a line at any angle and a second line the complement thereof, the two complemcntal angular positions being obtained by the obverse and reverse )osition of the instrument with reference to t ie work, as will be readily comprehended.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In a measuring instrument of the character specified. and in combination with the head and blade, adjustable stops applied to the head upon each side of the blade to be )rejected from a side thereof to a greater or less extent to steady and enable proper adjustment of the instrument to the work, substantially as set forth..
2. In a measuring instrument of the character substantially as set forth, the combination with the head and blade, of a stop aplied to the head and arranged a distance Yrom the blade and adjustable transversely or at a right angle to the plane of the instrument, and means for securing the said stop to the head in an adjusted position.
3. In a measuring instrument of the character substantially as set forth, and in combination with the head and blade, of a stop adjustable transversely of the head and having a lateral offset to 'engage with said head and properly position the stop and limit its movement in one direction, and means for securing the stop to the head and limiting its movement in the opposite direction.
4. In a measuring instrument of the charaeter specified, the combination with the head and blade, the head having a slot eX- tended inward from one edgel a sto adjustable transversely of the head and aving a lateral offset to engage with the side of the head opposite to that provided with the slot, and a fastening for securing the sto to the head in an adjusted position andp passed throu h the said slot thereof.
