DANIEL WERNER, or ST. Louis, MISSOURI.
Letters Patent No. 82,908, dated Octolier 6, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN BREEGH-LOADING PISTOLS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, DANIEL WERNER, of the city and county of St. Louis, State of Missouri, haveinvented a. new and useful Improved Combined Knife andPistol, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being hadto the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, in. which- I Figure 1 represents a top view of my knife and pistol, withthe blades of same-opent I Figure 2 represents a. side elevation of same, with a portion of the handle removed, showing the spiral spring and spindle. i I I Similar letters indicate like parts. I My inventionconsists in'attachingto a knife-handle, A, figs. 1 and 2, one or more pistol-barrels, B B, fig. 1,
and B, fig. 2, by means of twb'studs, age, fig. 2,.sliding on a spindle. d, screwed into the butt of the pistol. -A
spiral spring, 0, fig. 2, is placed at the end of this spindle, next to the butt, and between it and the stud c. A spring-catch,f, figs. land 2, keeps the barrels oftthepistol firmly against the breech-plate h, figs. 1 and 2. The lock of the pistol is in the butt, the triggers, K K, fig. 2, beingbeneath, and thehammers, m m, fig. 1, and m, fig. 2, above, as usual. 7 v J v The knives open and shut in'thc nsual.way, and 'the lock is of the ordi'nary'k'md. The pistol is breech-. loading. p p
By placing the thumb, as shown at p, fig. 2, the spring-catch being released, the spiral spring forces the barrels along the spindle, till' they assume the position shown in fig. 2, when the cartridge may be inserted and the barrels pushed home, the catch holding them as before. I
This spring-catch is fastened at the muzzle of the-pistol by a screw, 8, fig l, but I do not confine myself to this particular arrangement of it, but claim it when applied in any'eqnivalent manner. The advantages of my invention consist in its compactness and simplicity, and the facility and rapidity with which the pistols maybe loaded. I l
I do not intend to limit myself to the ap but claim it when applied to any kind of fire-arm.
I do not claim to be the first inventor of a combined knife and pistol, nor of the method of loading pistols or other fire-arms at the breech, orof the use of a. spring-catch to'hold the barrel in place; but
What I do claim as-my invention, and' desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-'- The barrels B, of the-described pistol, provided with the' catch f, located as shown and described, and
having the studs 0 a, sliding upon the rod 01, and operated in connection with the spring 0, as described, when said barrels are combined with the stock and locks of an ordinary pistol, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
DANIEL WERNER.
