To (all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Jornv STUART SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Me- Henry, in the county of Ohio and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful.
Lubricating Car-Wheel; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap- 1o pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to railroad-cars, and moreparticularly to the wheel, having novel lubricating meansfor continually supplying the oil to the journal of the wheel. I
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction and which can be manufactured altavery slight cost and at the same time be sold to the trade comparatively cheap.
Another objectof the invention is to provide a chambered portion in the body portion of the wheel in which the oil is adapted to be contained, so that-by the centrifugal motion of the wheel the body part of the 01] will have a tendency to adhere to the outer portion of the chamber and will only allow a small quantity to spray therefrom in the rotation of the wheel.
A further object of the invention is to provide a eylindr1calshaped cap which is insex ted over the end of the axle for the pur pose of holding the wheel,in correct position in relation to said axle, said cap being provided with oil-ducts which are slightly in- 3 5 clined to allow the oil to find its way to the chambered portion.
"A still furtherobject of the invention is to provide means for automatically closing the end of the cap after oiling.
This invention comprises, further ob'ects and combinations of elements, which wi l he hereinafter more fullydescribed, and shown in the accompanyin drawings, and the novel features thereof wil be pointed 'out by the appended claims.

Making renewed reference to the acoompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters indicate the corresponding arts in the several illustrations figures, 1 esignates the body of a car-wheel, having a chainbered portion 2, which is ada ted, if desired, to hold packing to prevent t e waste of the lubricating material. The body of the wheel is provided with a cylindrical bore 3, adapted to receive the journal portion 5 of the axle 6. The rear of the journal portion is provided with an abutment-hub 7 to prevent the wheel from moving inward, as shown clearly in the accompanying drawings. The outer face of the bod portion of the wheel is rovided with a cy indrical inclined bore 8,w ch is of larger diameter than the bore 3 of the wheel, and said cylindrical inclined bore 8 is an extension of the chambered portion 2 and also connects with said chambered portion, so as to allow the oil to find its way from the 8 inclined oil-ducts 9 of the cylindricalshaped cap 10, the end of which fits a cylindrical recess 11, which is provided in the outer portion of the bore 8, as shown clearly in the accompanying drawings; Said cylindrical .cap is provided with inclined oil-ducts 9, as before stated,which are circular in crossseotion, as shown clearly in Fig. 2 of the aceom-, pany drawings. Said cap is also rovided with similar ducts 12 intermediate t e ducts 9, which are of the form of longitudinal recesses. The said ducts 12 open into and connect, as at 13, with thec lindrical bore 14 ot the cap 10. In this way tfie lubricating mate rial also finds its way to the journal portion, as at 15, which portion fits within the bore of said cap, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings. i
