To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUSSELL MORRIS HANS- roRD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for lubricating the wheels of mine cars and the like and the principal object of the invention is to provide a lubricant receptacle in the axle of the car with means for permitting the passage of the same to the bearing part of the axle.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for delivering the lubricant to the lower part of the bearing surface at the point where the axle bears against the hub.
Still another object of the invention relates to the means for renewing the supply of lubricant without removing the wheel from the axle.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and inthe combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described. illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional view through an axle and wheel of a mine car to which my invention is applied;

Fig. 3 is a cross section through the axle.
In these views 1 indicates the axle of a mine car, a portion of which is shown at 2, and 3 indicates a wheel which engages the enlarged spindle part 4 of this axle. This wheel is held in place on the axle by means of the keeper ring 5 which has screwthreaded connection with the outer end of the Spindle and a key 6 serves to hold the ring against movement on the axle. In carrying out my invention, I form a reservoir 7 in the spindle part of the axle, Said reservoir extending inwardly from the outer screw-threaded engagement with the outer end of the reservoir, this plug having a socket 11 for receiving a Suitable tool whereby the plug may be removed from or inserted in the end of the reservoir. This plug is also provided with a lilling opening 12 which is closed by a small plug 13.
The outer face of the plug 10 is cut awayV around the filling opening, as at 14. As will be seen, the reservoir is eccentrically arranged in the upper part of the spindle portion of the axle so that the channels 8 pass through the thick wall at the lower part of the reservoir. v
By this construction the lubricant is fed to the lower part of the axle at the point where the same bears against the hub so that the parts are kept supplied with lubricant with the minimum amount of waste of said lubricant. The reservoir may be refilled without removing the wheel and whenever necessary, said reservoir may be cleaned by removing the closing plug.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the Scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. In combination with a mine car, an axle therefor having an enlarged spindle part of hollow construction to form a reservoir in the spindle part, the lower part of the periphery of they spindle part having a longitudinally extending groove therein and holes extending inwardly from the groove and communicating with the reservoir, a screw plug closing the outer end of the reservoir, an inclined lling opening in said plug and a screw plug closing said, opening.
2. In combination with a mine car, an axle therefor having an enlarged spindle part, a Wheel engaging said Spindle part, a keeper ring having screw threaded connection with the outer end of the spindle part and engaging the Wheel for holding the same on its spindle part, a key for preventing rotation of the keeper ring, a reservoir formed in said spindle part, Va screw plug Closing the end of the same, a longitudinally extending groove formed in the lower part of the periphery of the spindle part and 10 holes extending inwardly from said groove and communicating with the reservoir.
