GEORG EDUARD SOHMIDMER, OF NUREMBERG, GERMANY.
FILE FOR PAPERS AND DOCUMENTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 21, 1906.
Application filed September 7,1905. Serial No. 277,353.
To @ZZ whom, it Weary concern:
Be it known that I, GEORG EDUARD SCHMIDMER, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany, have invented a new and useful File for Papers and Documents, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a new and useful file for papers and documents and it consists in constructing a file of a set of posts of coiled material, whereby the said posts automatically assume an upright position when the file is open and are bent down by the closing of the file.
It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure l represents a perspective view of a file embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the posts in detached position. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view on line :c x, Fig. l, showingthe file in closed position, however. Fig. 4 represents a sectional view on line y y, Fig. l, with the upper portion of the posts also shown in section. Figs. 5 and 6 represent side elevations of portions of the device, showin different forms of hooks which may be emp oyed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the file having the covers B and C and a back portion D. Rising from one of the covers-as, for example, C-are posts E E and which may be secured to said cover C in any suitable manner. Also rising from the files are the posts F F, which are also secured to the file in any suitable manner, and in the present instance both sets of posts are connected with the plate G, which is pasted or otherwise secured to the flap` O. In the lower portion of the plate is provided a recess H, as will best be understood from Fig. 3 and which recess is adapted to receive the portions J and K of posts E E and F F, it being understood that the said posts are formed of coils of wire or other suitable material and that the portions J and K are formed integral with the posts, the coils being uncoiled at these portions,it being seen that in this manner the two sets of posts can be formed of a single piece of material and are seated in the recess H.
L designates hooks which are of suitable' size and of suitable material and adapted to enter orbe received by the upper ends of the posts E E and F F, so that the said hooks form substantially continuities thereof, as will be evident.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a construction wherein the hook is formed of coils continuous of the posts E, the end of which is adapted to enter the upper portion of the coils F..
`In Fig. 6 I have shown a construction wherein the hook may be formed integral or separate from the posts E, but are secured to the same in any suitable manner and provided with the end N, adapted to enter the upper portion of the post F.
The operation will be readily understood. When the file is in open position, as seen in Fig. l, the posts EE and F F assume the upright position, and by removing the hooks or one end thereof from the posts papers or documents may be filed thereon, after which the hooks serve to close the top of the same, by which provision should it be desired to examine any paper the papers above the same may be raised on the posts and moved over the hooks L and placed on the hooks E. The hooks L may now be removed and the paper taken from the posts F, after which the hooks are closed again with respect to the posts F and the papers returned to their normal position on the posts F. Vhen the cover B is closed, it will bend down the posts E E and F F in the position seen in Fig. 3, so that a coil folding file will result, the thickness of which will depend upon the number of papers, as P, thereon without respect to the size or height of the posts. As soon as the file is open the hooks again assume an upright position ready for operation. By reason of the construction just described the posts, as stated, automatically assume the upright position ready for use and they are of light and durable construction. l
It will be evident that various changes may be made by those skilled in the art which will come within the scope of my invention, and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. `A file having the post formed of coiled material, a hook at the top thereof and a post IOO of coiled material opposite to said rst-named post, said hook being adapted to 'form a continuity of the two posts.
2. In a le of the character stated, a post 'formed of coiled material and adapted to automatically assume an upright position when the file is opened and to be bent down by the closing of the ile.
3. In a device of the character described, pairs of HeXible posts, one member of one oi' the pairs being formed of a continuous piece of material with one member of the other pair.
4. In a device of the character described, a plurality of posts adapted to automatically assume an upright position when the file is opened and to be bent down by the closing` of the iile;
5. In a device of the character described, a plurality of pairs of iiexible posts, each having a closing device connected therewith and the members of each thereof being formed of a continuous piece of material with the respective member of the other.
6. In a device of the character described, a
plurality of pairs of posts, members of opposite pairs being formed of a continuous piece of flexible material and means for forming a continuity of one post of a pair with its lopposite member.
7. In a device of the character described, a plurality of pairs of posts, the members of one of each pair being formed of a continuous piece of flexible material anda closing device adapted to form a connection between the -posts of each pair.
In witness whereof I have signed my name this 23d day of August, 1905.
GEORG EDUARI) SCHMIDMER. In presence of- MILLARD PRETZFELDER, GEORGE E. WALDIN.
