To whom, it may concern..-
Beit known that I, FRANK C. DoRMEN'r, e citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Atomizers and Like Instruments, of which the followingris a specification.
his invention relates to improvements in atomizers and like instruments. v
The objects of thisinvention are, first, to provide an improved instrument of the class described adapted for use either as an atomprovide a combination atomizer or nebulizer and spraying devicewhich is very compact, simple in structure, and convenient to use third, to provide an improved spraying device by which theI spray is delivered in a. practically continuous stream; fourth, to provide an improved spraying device which may be quie douche; fifth, to provide in an instrument of the class described an improved air-pump Further objects and objects relatin towr structural detaiis will definitely appear om the detailed description to follow. e I accornplih the objects of my invention by the devices and Ymeans described in the followingspecication. Y Y
The invention is clearly defined and point- ,ed out inthe claims.
A structure embodying the features of reja" nsti-ated in the accom-j invention is clearly il panying drawings, forming a part of this speciiication, in which- Figure 1 is arvertical section ofV rnyirn-Y proved combination atomizcr or nebuiizer and spraying device, taken on a line corre-Y spondin to ne 1V 1 of Fig;V 2. Fig'. 2 is an inverte lan of thestructure appearing in Fig. 1. 4ig. 3 is enV eniarged detail section showing the structureV modified as a nasal line corresponding to line 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the locking-piece G for holding the plunger-rod of the p' pin its inner position. Y n Y "if in the drawings the sectionel'views are taken looking in the direction of ithe littie arrows at the ends of the section-lines, and
similar letters of reference refer to similarf parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, vthe csp-plate A ly converted into a. nasal Fig. 4 is a detail section taksnzon a' plungerfrod section is tubular and forms anV airsdeiivfry passage for the pump` Theplung'er-rod section B is telesco ically'ars ren "ed withinthe section B. Tiiis section' Vis e se'tubular. On the upper end of the rod- Ysection B'wis a hollow finger-piece B'", into which: it delivers. The upper end of the plungerrod section B Vis formed into a valve-serie, sind a bell-valve, as b, is provided to servees a check-valve, preventin 'the re- Yturn o Ythe air. Below the finger-prece B' Vthe section B is provided with air-inlet ports "f". section B is held norincily upiiid by the spring b, so that when the pluniger-rod' is in its normal position these ports Yare open.
Theeplon er is held Y Y Ypn'rrg'frxpii'lin er by the coiled spring b, which "IS arranged umierit.Y This ceded s Ynog is of greeter' tension than 'the jsgiirng'YY for the "piiiger-rod section B, so that when pres- Y Y The air is de*V norrnsiiy i V Y es fivered from the charnzieredV Y Y' inger-pieceyhy means of the lexibletuiie C. v This is preferably oiruobenwith a coiled?" spring e arren'gedrrit-hin the same to reventf is'being kinhed or collapsed, there y preventing the pa geni the air. 0n the end ofthis delivery ii'ris a tip C', which is 'e a t' tiielptornzerstuhe D or into the'nil ie D for the s rayer. Y The atomizer-tube is al-,l ranged through and carried by the cap-plate A. TheV atomizer-tube is provided with a suitabe'air-'pessage d and medicament-pasefinserted into the upper end of' sage d', these passages being arranged in the well-known manner. However, I preferably form the iiiedicanient-passage as an annular chamber and provide two or more deliveryopenings d, as is illustrated in the drawings. 'llie iiiedicament-delivery tube E is also cai'- iied by the cap-plate A, as clearly appears from the drawings. 'lhis delivery-tube preferably extends into the receptacle to a central point, so that it serves as a trap to prevent the spilling oi the medicament.
A nasal ti i E is provided for the deliverytube E. If it is desired to use the apparatus for treatment through the mouth, the nasal tip E is removed. When it is desired to use the apparatus as a spraying ap aratus, the air-delivery tube (l is connecte to the nipple D. 4
0n the inner end of the nip le Dis a valve, consisting of a rubber cap havinga slit 11 therein. The pressure of aii`- from the pum readily opens this; but it` is evident that ack pressure tends to close the slit.
The spraying-tube consists of an outer tube F, which is secured to the cap-plate, and the inner tube f, arranged therein. ner tube f projects downwardly into the receptacle to carry up the medicament, which is drawn therethrough by suction of the air as it is delivered past its tip from the outer tube F. The outer tube F is provided with a tip-piece F', having a delivery-o ening arranged in alinement with the end o the inedicament-tube f. As a means of su porting the medicament-tube f the air-tulbe F is bored out at its' outei` end to a proper size to receive and retain the medicament -tube. {Xlr-passages f are provided, so that the air 1s de ivered to substantially surround the tip of the medicament-tube.` f en it is desired to convert the sprayer into a nasal douche, the ti F is removed and the douche-ti" f is su stituted therefor. The liquid is elivered into the tip F agains i the wall f", whereby its direct force i broken. The tip is curved downward, so that the liquid readily ilows therefrom` The douche-tip F is provided with an in- Wardly-projecting flange f, which embraces the ti of the liquid-tube f, thereb prevent' t e deliveryMof the air througli the air-tu e F of the s rayer. This confines the air, so that the liquidi-is forced in a stream from the liquid-tube;
By arrangin the a ts of myy improved instrument as havei ustrated and described the same may be veryquickly adjustedfor use as an atoiruzer or as a s raying device or as a nasal douche. It is ound in practice that it is very desirable to' use a douche or s ray device for first Washing or cleansing t e parts to be ,treated and then applying the medicament by means of an atomizer. In some instances the douche is preferred or considered most desirable, and in others the The insprayer, and it is sometimes desirable to use both, first one and then the other. I have in my improved instrument provided a structure whereby both of these operations can be carried out. The structure is very compact, simple, and easy to adjust. By means of my iin rovcd pump a large quantity of air can lie su lied with comparatively little eii'ort. e structure is economical to produce and is not likely to get out of re air. By employing the checkvalves an the cham bered finger-piece for the plunger-rod a supply of air is furnished so that the spray is delivered in a continuous stream-that isl of course, when the pump is operated continuously and with reasonable s iced.
l If desired, the plunger may be locked in its inner position by means of the catch G, which'is inserted in the nip le D. This catch is provided with a notc at g, which engages the inner end of the ni ple, thereby preventing its withdrawal, whi e the tension i of the plun er-spring is against its outer end.
It is evi ent that my improved device is Very convenient to use and it is very easy to manipulate.
I have illustrated and described my imroved instrument in detail in the form preerred by lne on account of its structural 'simplicity and economy, althou h I am aware that it is capable of considera le variation in structural details without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1.
