SHOVEL-PLOW ATTACHMENT.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT L. BURNETT, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Hatchers, county of Quitman, State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shovel-Plow Attachments, of which the following is a full and clear specification, reference being had to rub-iron and guide-bar; Fig. 6, a similar view showing the opposite side of the iron; Fig. 7,?

a cross-section on the line 7 7 of Fig. 2.

The object of this invention is to provide a simple attachment for shovel-plows whereby the bar side of the plow-foot will be protected from wear and the plow will be rendered more easy of guidance, as more fully hereinafter set forth.

Referring to the drawings by reference characters, the letter A designates the plowbeam; B and C, the two parallel bars of the plow foot or standard, each of which is provided with an extension, (lettered, respectively, B and C,) which curves downwardly and rearwardly and upwardly and are each provided with a series of bolt-holes b through which and the beam is passed a bolt b whereby the angle of the plow-foot with respect to the beam may be varied.

The plow-shovel D is provided with the usual removable point P, and on its rear side is formed a longitudinal rib d, which latter is adapted to be clamped between the bars of the plow-foot by the two bolts 1 and 2.

The parts as above described are covered by my former patent, No. 803,549, and I therefore make no claim to them in this application.

The combined rub-iron and guide is designated as a whole by the letter E, and it is bolted to the outer face of the left bar B of the plow-foot by means of one of the bolts 2, that attach the shovel to the plow-foot. The body portion of the rub-iron is flanged around its forward and lower and rear edges to form a socket e, in which fits the plow-foot bar, so that when the device is bolted to the bar it is rigidly braced all around. The letter 6 designates the hole through which the bolt 2 passes. The front face of the rub-iron is beveled inwardly, so as to flt against the rear mclined face of the shovel, as shown most particularly in Fig. 7. Thus 'beveling the inward face of the iron gives the front flange e a wedge shape in cross-section, whereby when the iron is drawn tightly to place by the bolt said flange e will be wedged between the front edge of the bar B and the adjacent face of the shovel, thereby not only bracing and supporting the shovel, but also fastening it more securely to the plow-foot,

preventing it becoming loose. Formed. integral with the upper rear edge of the rubiron is a rearward-extending guide-bar e, whose lower edge is provided with an inwardly-extending flange e.

In shovel-plows of this character the right-' hand bar of the plow-foot is protected from wear by the shovel; but the left-hand or bar side of the plow-foot is not fully protected and is subjected to a great deal of wear. My rubiron and guide protects this left bar from wear, since it covers all that portion of the bar which is ordinarily subjected to wear. It will be observed also that this attachment enables the plow to be more easily guided, thereby making it easier to list or ridge up land when plowing down, as the furrows can be made closer together, thereby breaking the land more thoroughly. Furthermore, the guide prevents the plow from sheering off to the left, as all bar shovel-plows are in-- clined to do, especially when throwing two furrows together. It will be observed also that inasmuch as the guide works six or eight inches above the point of the plow it will be easier to break out middles than with the ordinary plows provided with landsides even with or very near the point of the plow. It will be observed also that my device is extremely simple and inexpensive to make, as the iron flts the plow-bar and can not become loose or out ofline. It will be observed, further, that the rub-iron protects the entire soil-engaging outer surface of the bar side of the plow-foot and that this wearsurface is in the same plane with the edge of the bar side of the, shovel and with the upright guiding-surface of the guide-bar.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In combination with a plow-foot and a plow-shovel having a vertical flange which is embraced by the plow-foot, of a rub-iron covering and embracing the soil-engaging outer face of thebar side of the plow-foot and pro-- IIO 'vided with a rearwardly-extending guidebar, said rub-iron being provided with a front flange which lies between the rear side of the shovel and the front edge of the adjacent part of the plow-foot, said flange terminating short of the plow-shovel flange.

2. In Combination with a shovel-plow, of an attachment consisting of a body portion adapted to be bolted to the bar side of the plow-foot and to embrace and cover the lower end thereof vand provided with a rear- Wardly-extending guide-bar, this guide-bar having a vertical guiding-faceand being connected, to the body portion, sothat while the plow is working this guide-bar- Will engage the soil near its surface only, substantially as set forth. i

3. In combination, a plow-foot composed of separated bars, a plow-shovel having a flangev fitting between; said bars, a rub-iron embraoingwand covering the soil-engaging .part of the bar-side of the plow foot and carrying a rearwardly-extendlng guidebar, said rub-iron being provided with a wedge-shaped flange e fitting between the. rear face of the shovel the front edge of the-plow-foot,

and a bolt 2 extending through the rub-iron and the plow-foot and the flange of the plowshovel. v a

4. In a shovel-plow the combination of a plow-foot and a plow-shovel attached there to, of a combined rub-iron and guide consisting of a body portion flanged to embrace the outer face of the bar side of the plowfoot and being of sufficient length to cover and protect the entiresoil-engaging. portion thereof and being provided with a rearwardly-extending guide-bar, this guide-bar.
