Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. TUCKER, a citizen of the United Bridgeport, in the county of Caddo and Territory of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oultivators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cultivators.
It relates particularly to riding-cultivators in which the driver employs his'feet for swinging the beams laterally. In such cultivators it is comparatively easy for the driver to force the beams outwardly, but more diflicult for him to draw the beams toward each other with his feet.
The object of this invention is to provide means by which the driver may easily swing the beamsapart, means being provided by which the beams are retracted toward each other.
` In its preferable form my invention provides a resilient arch connecting the two beams, the tension of the arch normally forcing the beams laterally to a certain position, which certain position is the one in which the beams are most commonly used.
My invention provides, further, rear carrywith means by which the driver with his feet may laterally swing the carrying-wheels', and thus laterally swing the beams.
Another obj ect of my invention is to provide a novel form of arch combined with means by which the axles pivoted in the arch may be swung so as to swing the forward wheels.
Another object of my invention is to provide in combination with the laterally-swinging beams a third beam having thereon a cutting blade or shovel and connected by a uni-l versal joint with the arch and means supported by the swinging beams for vertically and laterally oscillating the third beam.

1 denotes the forward carrying-wheels rotatively mounted, respectively, upon the horizontal portions of the axles 2, each of which is provided with a vertical portion pivotally mounted in the arch. The arch comprises, preferably, two parts laterally adjustable toward and from each other and provided with means forsecuring the two parts of the divided arch in the positions to which they may be adjusted.
In its preferable .form myy invention provides two vertical tubular members 3, in which the vertical portions of the axles 2 are pivotally mounted, respectively, said axles 2 ICO having each a collar 4, upon which rests the y lower end of the adjacent tubular member 3.

Each member 3 is provided with a horizontal, preferably rectangular, portion 6, which extends towardy and is adjustable toward and from the opposite horizontal portion 6. 7 and 8, disposed, respectively, in front and Two clamping-plates j IIO at the rear of thehorizontal portions 6, are secured thereto by transverse bolts 9, extending therethrough and located in transverse holes provided therefor in the horizontal portion 6. The portions 6 and the plates 7 and 8 are provided, preferably, with a series of transverse holes by which the horizontal portion 6 may be adjustably mounted' between the clamping-plates 7 and 8 relative toV each other. When it is desired to widen the arch, the bolts 9 are Withdrawn and the members 3 moved outward laterally to the position desired, at which time the bolts 9 are inserted in the transverse holes in the portions 6, suitably located for retaining the parts in the positions to which they have been adjusted. The rear plate 8 is preferably of angle-ironvand has secured to it pivotally the forward end of a horizontal lever 10. Two horizontal bars 11 are pivotally connected at one set of ends, respectively, to the crankarms 5, the other set of ends being provided with a series of vertical holes 12, through each of which may be inserted a vertical bolt 13, extending through a hole provided therefor in the lever 1() and by means of which the bars 11 are connected pivotally to the lever 10. By changing the bolt 13 from one hole 12 to the other in each of the bars 11 the normal position vof the crank-arm 5 relative to the arch may be varied. By laterally swinging the lever 10 the wheels 1 may be swung simultaneously in like directions through the intermediacy of the bars 11, crank-arms 5,
and axles 2. For retaining the lever 10 in the position to which it may be adjusted a locking mechanism is provided, comprising the following parts: Slidable longitudinally on the lever 10 is a sleeve 14, provided at its forward end witha projection 15, adapted to enter one or more peripheral notches 16 on a horizontal ratchet-plate 17, the forward end of which is secured to the angle-iron 8 'by means of two vertical bolts 18 extending through said ratchet-plate and the horizontal portion of said angle-iron. The sleeve 14 is withdrawn from engagement with the ratchet-plate 17 by means of a horizontal rod 19, the forward end of which is connected to the sleeve 14 and the rear end of which is connected to one arm of a bell-crank lever 20, pivoted at its angle by means of a vertical bolt 21 to the member 10. Each shaft 26 is provided above the adjacent beam with a forwardly-extending 'arm 27, to the outer end of which is connectved a strap 28, by which the arm is secured to the adjacent foot of the driver. Each shaft or wheel-support 26 below the adjacent beam has a rearwardly-extending arm 29, provided with a horizontal lateral projection 30, upon which is rotatively mounted a carrying-wheel 31. The carrying-wheels 31 are preferably dished, on concave inner sides of each of which is secured a collar 32 by means of bolts 33, which extend through holes provided in the collar and the screw-threaded ends of which are fitted in the screw-threaded holes provided transversely in the adjacent wheel 31. Each collar 32 is provided with a central horizontal hole fitted to the projection 30, which projection -is screw-threaded at its outer end and has mounted thereon a nut 34, located in a central recess .provided in the outer side of the washer 32. This manner of mounting the wheels 31 prevents the access of dirt and moisture to the bearings. Each shaft or wheel-support 26 is provided at its upper end with a rearwardly-extending horizontal arm 36. A transverse horizontal bar 37, preferably of resilient material, is supported at its respective ends by the arms 36. Below the arms 36 on the shafts 26 are pro vided two rearwardly-extending horizontal arms 33. Two vertical rods 39 have their upper and lower ends secured, respectively, to the adjacent arms 36 and 38,. Encircling said rods 39 are two coil-springs 40, mounted one on each rod and the lower end of each of which is supported by the adjacent arm 33. A transverse bar 41 is provided at its ends, respectively, with vertical holes, in which are slidably fitted the rods 39. The ends of the .bar 41 are supported upon the upper ends of the springs 40, respectively. The bars 37 and 41 support centrally thereon the drivers seat 42, which seat rests upon the upper bar 37, said b ar resting at its middle upon the upwardly-turned middle portion of the bar 41.
The driver when mounted on the seat 42 has his feet secured to the arms 27 by the straps 28. He can thus force the arms 27 outwardly, thus swinging the shafts 26 so as to swing the forward parts of the wheels 31 in an outward direction, thus causing the beams 24`and 25 to be swungl apart from each other at their rear ends. @wing to physical reasons, it is more diflicult for the driver to swing the beams 24 and 25 toward each other than it is for him to push them apart. To assist the driver in swinging the beams inwardly at their rear end, I provide a resilient means which normally tends to force the beams laterally to and retain them in a certain position, which position is the one in which it is desired to retain them the greater portion of the time. This resilient means comprises the following elements: a resilient arch, comprising two upwardly-extending inwardly-curved resilient rods 43 and three clamping- plates 44 and 45, has its ends se- IOO cured, respectively, to the beams 24 and 25. The beams 24 and 25 are provided each with a vertical hole in which is inserted the lower end of the adjacent rod 43. Each of said rods 43 is provided with one or more coils 46, wlich servesto increase the fiexibility of the ro s. rods 43 are held clamped between two rear plates 44 and a forward plate 45, connected to the rear plates 44 by means of two bolts 47, which extend through horizontal holes provided in the plates 44, respectively, and between the rods 43, the forward ends of the bolts 47 being screw-threaded and fitted to I screw-threaded holes provided therefor in the plate 45. By loosening the bolts 47 the rods 43 may be adjusted lengthwise relative to each other for widening or narrowing the resilient arch, and thus providing means for varying the normal position of the beams 24 and 25.. When the driver Vdesires to throw apart the rear end of the beams 24 and 25 with his feet, he forces outwardly the arms 27, thus swinging apart the rear ends of the beams 24 and 25, as already described, and against the pressure of the rods 43, which rods, when the outward pressure upon the arms 27 is removed, retract the bars 24 and inwardly to their normal position. Y
Upon each beam 24 and 25 is mounted a .gang of shovels 48. Each gang of shovels is provided with two beams 49, having secured to their rearlower ends the shovels 48 and pivotj ed adjacent its forward end to the adjacent 3 5 beam 24 or 25, as the case may be, by means of a horizontal bolt 50. Each beam 49 has a portion extending in front of the adjacent bolt 50, which is embraced upon its upper and lower sides by a bifu-rcated rearwardly- 4o extending arm 51, two of which are provided at the lower end of each of two upwardly-extending levers 52, each lever 52 having a bifurcated lower end pivotally mounted upon a horizontal bolt 53, located in a transverse hole provided one in each beam 24 and 25. When the levers 52 are swung forward and backward, the beams 49 are swung so as to throw the shovels 48 downward and upward, so that they may be inserted into or withdrawn from the ground. For releasably locking the levers in any desired position, two curved ratchet-plates 54 are secured upon the upper sides, respectively, of the beams 24 and 25. Each ratchet-plate 54 is `located between the arms of the bifurcated lower end of the adjacent lever 52 and is provided with a series of radial holes 55, each adapted to receive therein a bolt 56, slidably mounted lengthwise of the adjacent lever 52 in suitable openings provided in the two laterally-extending arms of i a U-shaped plate 57, which connects the two arms of the adjacent lever 52. Each bolt 56 is encircled by a spring 58, which encircles 65 the bolt and has its lower end bearing upon The upper horizontal portions of the the flange 59 and the upper end against the lower side ofthe upper arm of the plate 57. For withdrawing the bo'lt 56 from the opening 55 in which it is located, so that the adjacent lever 52 may be swung to a different position, the following mechanism is provided To the upper end of each bolt 56 is secured the lower end of a rod 60, the upper end of which isecured to one arm of a bell-cranklever 61, pivoted to the-upper end of the adjacent lever 52. By properly swinging the bell-crank levers 61 the bolts 56 may be withdrawn against the pressure of the springs 58 from engagement with the ratchet-plates 54, thus permittingswinging of the levers 52 forward and backward.
For the purpose of cutting out grass and weeds when cultivating corn and for thinning out cotton when the cultivator is used for cultivating cotton l provide a shovel-beam located between the beams 24 and 25 and provided with means by which the driver may vertically and laterally oscillate said beams. A beam 62 has secured to its lower vertical end a shovel 63, the forward horizontal end of the beam 6 2 being connected, by means of a universal joint, with the forward arch in a manner such that the said beam may be swung vertically and laterally.
.he universal joint comprises the followingdescribed mechanism: A vertical plate 64 l has its upper end secured rigidly to the forward side of the arch by means of a horizontal plate 65 and two bolts 66, which extend through openings provided therefor in the plates 7 8 65 and horizontal portions 6, the
bolts being located at each side, respectively, of the plate 64.
The forward ends of the bolts 66 are. screwthreaded and have mounted thereon the nuts 66, which retain the plate 65 against the plate 64. The lower end of the plate 64 is U-shaped and provided throughthe two arms with transverse holes in which is rotatively mounted a horizontal longitudinally-disposed bolt 68, the rear end of which is provided with a transverse hole in which is rotatively mounted a horizontal bolt 69, which extends through holes provided for it in the arms of the bifurcated forward end of the beam 62.
The forward end of the bolt 68 is threaded and has mounted thereon a nut ,70, which bears upon the forward side of the plate 64.
Pivoted at it-s lower end by means of a horizontal bolt 71 to the rear part of the beam 62 is a lever 72, disposed vertically and provided with a longitudinal slot 73, in which is mounted a pin 74, having its rear end rigidly secured to the plate 45 and which serves as a fulcrum for swinging the levers 73 to and fro for laterally oscillating the beam 62 and shovel 63. The upper end of the lever 72 is provided with a rearwardly-curved handle 75, by which the lever is laterally oscillated and raised and lowered. lFor exerting a lifttion of my l swinging ing pressure upon the rear end of the beam 62 a coil-spring 75 is provided', the upper end of which is secured to the plate 45 and the lower end of which is connected to the vertical portion of the beam 62, the tension of the spring being such that it will have a lifting effect upon the beam. In operating this porinvention the driver occupying the seat 42 may, with one hand grasping the handle 75, swing the lever 72 laterally, so as to swing the shovel 63 to the place desired. He can when desired to lift the shovel 63 clear of the ground effect this result by drawing the lever 72- upwardly.
Various modiiications of my invention may be made without departing from its spirit. v
Having thus described my invention, what l claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A l. The combination with the laterallybeams supporting the shares, of two wheels for supporting the swinging ends of said beams respectively, means by which the driver may swing said wheels so as to force the beams laterally to and fro, and resilient ymeans for resisting movement of the beams from their normal positions.
2. The combination with the laterallyswinging beams supporting the shares, of two wheels for supporting the swinging ends of said beams respectively, a spring, means by which said spring normally forces the beams toward each other, and means by lwhich the driver, may swing the beams apart against the pressure of said spring.
3. rlhe combination with the laterallyswinging beams supporting the shares, of two wheel-supports pivotally mounted one on each beam and provided each with an arm adapted to be engaged and moved by the drivers foot for Swingin@f the support, two wheels rotatively mounte one on each wheelsupport, and means for resisting swinging of the beams laterally from their normal positions.

The combination with the laterallyswinging beams supporting the shares, of two wheel-supports pivotally mounted one on each of said beams and provided each with means for being swung laterally with the drivers foot, two wheels rotatively mounted one on each of said wheel-supports, and resilient means for resisting swinging of the beams laterally from their normal positions.
5. The combination with the laterallyswinging beams supporting the shares, of two vertical wheel-supports pivotally mounted one on each beam and having each two laterally-extending arms one adapted to be engaged by the drivers foot and the other supporting a wheel carrying the rear end of the beam adjacent to it, said two wheels, and means for swinging said beams inwardly aftei` they have been swung outwardly by the swinging of said wheel-supports.
6. The combination with the laterallyswinging beams supporting the shares, of two vertical oscillatory supports mounted one on each beam and having each a rearwardly-extending arm and a forwardly-extending arm for engaging and being swung by the foot of the driver, and two 'wheels rotatively mounted on said rearwardly-extending arms respectively.
7. The combination with the laterallyswinging beams supporting the shares, of two vertical wheel-supports oscillatively mounted one on each beam and having each a forwardly-extending arm for engagement with the foot of the driver for swinging the said support, each support having also a rearwardly-extending arm, two wheels rotatively mounted on said rearwardly-extending arms respectively, and resilient means for resisting lateral movement of said beams from their normal positions.
8. The combination with the laterally.- swinging beams supporting the shares, of two vertical shafts rotatively mounted one in each beam and each having two rearwardly-extending arms and one forwardlyextending arm, the forwardlyextending arm being adapted to be engaged and swung by the drivers feet, a seat supported by two of said rearwardly-extending arms, and two wheels rotatively mounted respectively on said other two rearwardly-extendin arms.
9. The combination with the. swinging beams supporting the shares, of two vertical shafts rotatively mounted one on each beam and having each two rearwardly-extending arms and one forwardlyextending arm, the forwardly-extending arm being adapted to be engaged and swung by the drivers foot, a seat supported by two of said rearwardly-extending arms, two Wheels rotatively mounted on the other two of said rearwardly-extending arms respectively, and means for swinging said beams laterally toward each other after they have been swung outwardly by the swinging of said forwardlyeXtending arm.
10. The combination with the laterallyswinging beams for supporting the shares, of two vertical shafts rotatively mounted one on each of said beams and having each two rearwardly-extending arms and one forwardly-extending arm by which the shaft is pivotally swung, a transverse bar connected to two of said rearwardly-extending arms one on each shaft, two wheels rotatively mounted one on each of the other of said rearwardly-extending arms, and means for swinging the beams toward each other after they have been outwardly swung by the swinging of said forwardly-extending arms.

two vertical shafts pivotally mounted one on eachon said beams and having two rearwardly-extending arms and one forwardlyextending arm on each shaft, each forwardlyextending arm having means for being engaged and swung by the drivers foot, a transverse bar support by two of said rearwardly-.extending arms, one on each shaft, two wheels rotatively mounted on said other two rearwardly-extending arms, and resilient means for resisting swinging of the beams laterally from their normal positions.
12. The lcombination with the laterallyswinging beams supporting the shares, of twovertical shafts pivotally mounted one on each beam and having each two rearwardly and one forwardly extending arms, a transverse bar connected to two of said rearwardly-extending arms, one on each shaft, two wheels rotatively mounted on said other two rearwardly-extending arms respectively,
resilient means connected to said beams for resisting swinging of them laterally from their normal positions, and a seat supported by said transverse bar.
13. The combination with the laterallyswinging beams supporting the shares, of the arch to which the beams are respectively pivoted one at each side, the two wheels rotatively mounted on the opposite ends of the arch respectively, two rear carrying-wheels means by which when the rear carryingwheels are laterally swung the beams are swung laterally, and resilient means for resisting swinging of the beams from their normal positions.
14. The combination with a divided arch provided with means for adjusting the two parts laterally relative to each other, of the carrying-wheels mounted on' said two parts of the arch respectively, two beams pivoted respectively to said two parts of the arch and adapted to support the shares, two rear carrying-wheels, means by which the rear carrying-wheels may be swung by the drivers feet laterally and swing said beams laterally, and resilient means for resisting the swinging of the beams laterally from their normal positions.
15. The combination with two laterallyswinging beams supporting the shares, of two resilient rods secured one to each beam, meansfor securing together said two resilient rods, the formation of said rods being such that they will normally force the beams laterally toward a certain position, two carrying-wheels, and means by which when the said carrying-wheels are laterally swung the beams will be laterally swung.
16. The combination with two laterallyswinging beams supporting the shares, of two resilient rods formed into an arch and secured at opposite ends to the beams respectively, means for securing the other'or adjacentv ends of the rods to each other, two
carrying-wheels, and means connected with said beams and said wheels respectively by which the wheels may be laterally swung and the beams also laterally swung.
17. The combination with two laterallyswinging beams supporting the shares, of a divided arch connected at its ends to said beamsl respectively and comprising two resilient rods adjustably movable lengthwise upon each other and held together -by a locking means, one rod being secured to each beam and the tension of the rods serving to resist movement of the beams laterally from their normal positions, two carrying-wheels, and means by which the driver with his feet may laterally swing the said 'wheels and cause the beams to be swung laterally.
18. The combination with the arch having. mounted thereon the forward carryingwheels, of two laterally-swinging-beams pivoted to the arch and carrying the shares,
means by which the driver may with his feet swing the beams laterally, a beam carrying at one end a share locatedbetween the firstnamed beams and connected by a universal joint with the arch, resilient means for resisting movement of said first-named beams laterally from their normal positions, and means supported by said beams for vertically ,and laterally oscillating said second-named beam. j
19. :The combination with the arch having mounted thereon the carrying-wheels, of two laterally-swinging beams pivoted to the arch and carrying the shares, two rear carryingwheels, two wheel-supports on which are mounted respectively the rear wheels, said wheel-supports being pivotally mounted one on each beam and provided each with means for being swung by the drivers feet so as to swing the rear carrying-wheels and the beams laterally, means for resistir g movement of the beams laterally from their normal positions, a beam carrying at one end a share and pivoted by a universal joint to said arch, and means by which said second-named beam may be vertically and laterally oscillated.
20. The combination with the arch, of two beams pivoted thereto so as to be swung laty erally toward and from each other, a resilient arch for retaining said beams intheir normal positions, means by which the driver may with his feet laterally swing said beams, a beam pivoted to the first-named arch so as to swing vertically and laterally and supporting a share, and a lever connected to the secondnamed beam and fulcru-med on said resilient arch.
21. The combination with the arch having mounted thereon the carrying-wheels, of two beams pivoted to the arch so as to swing laterally and carrying the shares, two rear carrying-wheels, means connected with the beams and rear carrying-wheels by which the driver may with his feet laterally swing said rear Ato as toswing laterally, two vertical shafts pivoted one upon each beam, each having a laterally-projecting arm, two rear carryingwheels rotatively mounted respectively onv said arms, means by which the driver with his feet may pivotally swing said shafts, resilient means for resisting` movement of said beams laterally from their normal positions, a vertically and laterally movable lever fulcrumed upon said resilient means, and a beam carried by the arch to which it is connected by a universal oint, the latter-named beam carrying a share and connected to said lever so as to be swung thereby.
23. The combination with the supportingbeam, of a second beam having a share carried thereby and pivoted to the first-named beam and projecting forward of the pivotal point, a lever pivoted at its lower end to the first-named beam and having a rearwardlyextending bifurcated arm embracing the forward end of the second-named beam, and releasable means for locking the lever in different positions to which it may be swung.
24. The combination with the supportingv beam, of a rearwardly-extending beam carrying a share and pivoted adjacent its forward end to the first-named beam, a lever pivoted adjacent 'its lower end to the first-named beam and having a rearwardly-extending bifurcated arm embracing the forward end of the second-named beam for swinging said beam upward and downwardly when the lever is properly swung, a curved ratchetplate secured to the first-named beam and having a series of radial holes, a slidable bolt carried by the lever and adapted4 to enter said radial holes, a spring resisting movement of said bolt in a direction for entering said holes, and means for retracting the bolt against the pressure of the spring.
25. The combination with the supportingbeam, of two share-beams pivoted thereto and having each a portion extending forward of the pivotal point, a lever having its lower bifurcated end pivoted to said first-named beam, each bifurcation having a rearwardlyextending bifurcated arm embracing the forward end of the adjacent share-beam, a curved ratchet-plate located between the bifurcations of the lever and mounted on the first-named beam and provided with a plurality of radial holes, a bolt slidably mounted on the lever, a spring for forcing said bolt into said holes, and means carried by the lever for retracting said bolt. 4
26. The combination with the arch, of two beams pivoted so as to swing laterally thereon, two vertical shafts pivotally mounted one in each of said beams and having each two rearwardly-extending arms disposed one above the other, and having each a forwardlyextending arm by which the shaft connected thereto may bepivotally 'swung by the foot of the driver, two rear carrying-wheels rotatively mounted on the two lower rearwardlyextending arms respectively, a transverse bar connected to the two upper rearwardlyextending arms, a resilient arch connected at its respective ends to the said beams and means resisting movement of said beams laterally from their normal positions, a sharebeam pivotally connected by a universal joint `to the arch, and a lever fulcrumed on the resilient arch so as to swing laterally and vertically adjustable relative to the arch and connected to said share-beam.
27. The combination with the arch, of the two beams pivoted thereto, resilient means for resisting movement of the beams laterally from their normal positions, a beam having thereon a share and pivoted by a universal joint to the arch, a lever for swinging said second-named beam, and a fulcrum on said resilient means and upon which the lever is mounted so as to be moved vertically and swung thereon laterally.-
28. The combination with the arch, of the two beams pivoted thereto, resilient means for resisting movement of the beams laterally from their. normal positions, a fulcrum device carried by the said resilient means, a beam connected by a universal joint with the arch, and a lever connected to the secondnamed beam and having a longitudinal slot in which is located the fulcrum device.
29. The combination with the arch, of two beams pivoted thereto, retaining means for resisting movement of the beams laterally from their normal positions, a fulcrum mounted on said retaining means, a beam connected by a universal joint with the arch, a lever connected to said second-named beam and slidable lengthwise of itself upon said fulcrum, and a spring connected with the retaining means for exerting a lifting pressure on the second-named beam.
30. In a cultivator-arch, the combination with the two axles each having a vertical portion, of two tubular members pivotally mounted on said axles respectively and provided each with a horizontal portion extending toward the horizontal portion of the opposite member, adjustable means for securing the said horizontal portions to each other, a lever pivotally mounted on said horizontal portions, and means connected with the lever for swinging the axles respectively.
31. In a cultivator-arch, the combination IOO with the two axles each having a vertical portion, of two tubular members pivotally mounted on said vertical portions of said axles respectively, each tubular member having a horizontal portion, a clampingplate, adjustable means for securing the clamping-plate to the horizontal portions of said tubular members, a lever pivoted to said clamping-plate, and means connected with the lever for pivotally swinging the axles.

The combination with the two axles, each having a vertical portion, of the arch comprising' two tubular members y,pivotally mounted on said vertical portions and having each a horizontal portion, the horizontal portions being adjustable toward and from each other and means for securing the horizontal portions together in the positions to which they are adjusted, a lever pivoted to the horizontal portion of the arch, two crankarms mounted on the vertical portions of said axles, and two connecting-bars pivoted respectiveljT to said crank-arms and to said lever.Y
33. The combination with the two axles, each having a vertical portion, of the arch comprising two tubular members pivotally mounted on said vertical portions respectively and having each a horizontal portion, and means for securing said horizontal portions together, a lever pivoted to said arch, releasable locking means on said arch for retaining the lever in a position to which it is adjusted, two crank-'arms mounted one on each vertical portion of said axles, and two bars pivoted respectively to said crank-arms and to said lever.
34. The combination with the arch comprising two parts laterally adjustable relative to each other and having means for securing them in the positions adjusted, of the two axles having each a vertical portion pivi oted in said arch and having each a crankarm, a lever pivoted to the arch, releasable means for locking the lever in a position to which it may be adjusted, and two bars pivoted respectively to the said crank-arms and to the lever, the points of pivotal connection with the lever of said bars being changeable lengthwise of said bars.
