' Be it known that I, Louis EDWARD LEVY, a citizen'of the United States, anda resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and 4State of Pe'nnsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Matrix-Making Machines, suc
as are used in making stereotype `printing-plates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, such as and use my invention.
This invention relates to improvements in machines or apparatus which are adapted to be used in' the production of papier-mch stereotype molds, andV in carrying out my invention asheet is clamped between two separable'parts of the apparatus to overlie a form of type andat the same time form the bottom of. a hood or chamber into which air under compression is admitted, so that the matrix-sheet will be forced by air-pressure into the interstices of the type to Vproduce a matrix from which a stereotype-plate c anvbe ss made.
" Inthe laccompan ling drawings, Figure 1 is I a vertical section e a stereotyping-press embodyin -my im rovements, and in such view t v apier-mach sheet placed immediately over t e type and clamped be- .1l i tween the sections of the machine; and Fig. 2

AThe apparatus which I may use inlcar'rys "ing, out my invention consists, preferably, of a stand A, upon lwhich issu ported a table' B,
vhaving a depressed centra ortion which is ada ted to support a form o type, and below l suc .type-support there `is a'steam-chamber l' i 'for other means for applying heat to the tabletop forlthe purpose-ofsettin'g or drying the A cent toits corners-links D, ,Which carry cammatrix-sheet. The table -pr top B has adj ai. levers E, the cam portion ofsaid levers being y rim of a hood or prises a .adapted to engage the. laterally-projecting dome F.

terweight, F', so that-it may be raisedvertically by said` counterweight when the clamps are disconnected from the flange. A ii-exible pipe G enters the "upper portion'of'the dome, such" pipe being connected with an air-tank or pump, so that air under compression may be admitted to the 'dome and force the'papiermchsheet against the type. s
l In forming a mold with a dry paper matrix a form of type H is placedv so as to rest u on the centrally-depressed ortion of the ta le.-
The matrix-sheet I is t en placed over the type so that its edges will rest upon the plane upper surface of the table. The dome is now lowered so as to rest upon the marginal portion 'of the matrix-sheet and yis clamped to vpressionis now let into the dome and forces the papier-mch u on the t e to forma matrix thereof. W en a dry s eet of'paper isused,it may.be` repared so that the upper git After the matrix as been formed steam may be let into the compartment C tol heat the type and iix the dry matrixf4 After the matrix has 'been set the clamps are release and the dome raised, and when vthe sheet has been trimmed it is readyfor the mold.
In Fig. `2 I have shown a manner of forming a matrix, using a moist sheet of papiermch, and when a moist paper sheet I is used it is overlaid by a dry blanket. or other absorbent overlay K, above which is placed av sheet of .rubber or other air-tight material L of suiiicient size to extend beyond the form of type and be clamped 'between the table and the flanges of the dome. y
By-means of this ap aratus I am enabled to employ a dome whidli is open at its lower end and make papier-mch matrices either- IOO 7o the table by the cam-levers, so that. said Having thus described my invention,\vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi
1. In a matrix-forming ress, a base having a plane margin and wit in such margin a depressed support for type, clamps maintamed in movable engagement with the base, a hood having handles and a counterweight which is attached to the hood by suitablyguided flexible connections and a flexible pipe attached to the hood for admitting air under (Lompressionto the interior of the hood,- the construction being such that a matrixsheet may be clamped between the hood and base, said matrix-sheet overlying the type and forming the bottom of the hood to be forced by compressed air admitted into the hood against the type.
2. In a press for the purpose set forth, a
ybase having a depressed support for a form of type and a plane surface surrounding such depression, heating means below the typesupport, a hood having a rim to overlie the mar in of the base, a counterbalaneing- Wei t flexibly connected to the hood and gui ed to exert an upward pull thereon, a flexible tube-connected With the hood and with an air-tank for supplyin air under compression to the hood and a s eet adapted to overlie the base and form of type supported thereby, sueh'sheet forming the bottom of the hood, and means for clamping the margin of the sheet between the base and hood, for the purpose set forth.
