Be it known that I, GEORGE R. WARD, a citizen of the United States,'residing at New York, N. Y., have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulp-Molding Ma chines, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.
My invention relates to a machine for forming articles from a suitable pulp; and my object is toimprove the construction of such machines.
My invention will be defined in the claims.
In the drawings showing the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a plan view; Fig. 2, a side elevation, parts being in section. Fig. 3 is a central sectional view; Fig. 3 a detail sectional view on line as as of Fig. 3. Fig. 4. is a partial section of a modification, parts being omitted; and Fig. is a section on line y y of Fig. 4.
In the above preferred embodiment, 1 is the base on which the parts are mounted, and 2 is a support extending therefrom.
3 is a traveling mold-face, preferably perforated, as shown. faceyl have in this embodiment provided a vertical shaft 4, which may be rotated intermittently or step by step by means of a roller.

In order to apply a layer of pulp to the mold-face, 1 preferably provide a stationary vat 10, containing a suitable pulp, as shown. In the present embodiment I have provided an auxiliary pulp-holder 11 in said vat, which normally stands below the level of the 'pulp in the vat and is raised up to said mold-face, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, carrying with it a quantity of pulp. The mold-face enters the pulp-holder 11', as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3.

The shaft 4 may carry a holhaving pins 17 thereon. A cam-wheel 18, fixed on the shaft 19, engages a roller 20 on lever 21 and rocks the same on pins 22, which lie in a slot in shaft 19, as shown in Fig. 2. The rock-lever 21 has two legs which cmbrace sleeve 16 and lie beneath pins 17, by which the sleeve and parts carried by it are raised to the proper height. The slotted wheel 7 then rotates the mold-face 3 a quarter-turn, and as 1 preferably provide on head 8 a number of mold-faces similar to the face 3 (four in the present embodiment) a new face is brought into the position shownin Fig. 2. A second mold-face 23, (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2,) carried by sleeve 16, may be provided, which registers with mold-face 3 in its new position and by which the layer of pulp on the mold-face may be compressed to form the article at the same time that a layer of pulp is applied to the succeeding face. The sleeve 16 then sinks again, and the starwheel turns head 8 another quarter-turn, bringing face 3 into the position shown at the right of the figures.

In a pulp-machine in combination a traveling perforated mold-face, and means to cause the same to travel in a substantially horizontal plane, a receptacle for containing a suitable pulp, said receptacle being stationary relative to the horizontal direction of travel of said face, means to dip said face in the pulp therein, and a suction device to apply suction through said perforated face IEO ' perforated mold-face,
containing a'suitable pup, means to auto-' matically give. a relative movement between whereby said face receives a layer of pulp, a second mold-face located beyond and outside of said receptacle and relatively stationary with respect to the travel of said first face and adapted 'to register with said first face, and means to press said faces together to form the article and separate said faces without removing the article from said first face, a receiving-face, and means to move said first face and said receiving-face together, and means-to apply a draft of air through one of said faces to transfer-said article to said receiving-face,
