The means for forcing the wire into the channel 2O consists of a bent finger 21, carried by the movable section-plate 4, which produces an offset in the wire, as shown at C, near the rear right-hand corner of the coil in ,Fig. 9. The movable section-plate 4 is also provided in its front edge with projections 22, which are adapted to engage the starting end portion of the wire and clamp it upon the main section-plate 1 when the movable sectionplate 4 is lowered into winding position.
-Pivoted fingers 23 are located in notches 24 at the corners of the yoke-shaped frame 2 and serve to hold the several convolutions of the coil in place at these oints during the The l dwer ends of the gers 23 are provided with crank-arms 25, which are connected by a link 26, extending 1 through the channel 12 and rovided with a handle 27, whereby the gers may be caused to fold back into alinement with the shouldered frame 2 when it is desired to remove the complete coil from the form.
The means for confining the offset bends during the shaping or unfolding of the coil consists of a flat clamping member 28, hinged at 29 29 to the rear edge of the shelf 8, so as to fold over upon the latter, being provided-with notches 30 30 to clear the projecting fingers 3 3, and with shoulder-plates 31 31, which project upwardly in line of the axis of the hinges 7 and serve as abutments against which the movable section 4 contacts when moved outwardly beyond the vertical. A catch 32 is carried by the shelf 8, which is adapted to engage the front edge of the clamping member 28 and hold it in closed position.
The end of the table and main sectionlate are provided with a slot 33, in which a ever 34 is fulcrumed. The lever is provided in one edge with a notch 35, which is adapted to cooperate with the corners of the slot 33 to sever the wire. The main and movable section- plates 1 and 4 are provided in their front edges with recesses 36 37 to permit retaining-clips 38 (shown in Fig. 9) being applied to the coil before removal rom the form.
The coil is wound and shaped as follows: The parts of the form are brought into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 6, with the gage-arm in elevated position. The starting end of the wire is placed in the box 17 and passed through the channel 20 beneath the bent finger 21. The movable section 4 is then forced down and the bolt 13 shot into locking position by the lowering of the gagearm 16 to inoperative position. The wire is led to the left in front of the shouldered projection 2, around the left end under finger 3, in front of the lowermost part of the terraced projection 5, around the right end of projection 2, under finger 3, and back to the position of the bent finger 21. This series of steps is re eated for each succeeding convolution in t e coil. The clamping member 28 is then folded over into the position indicated in Fig. 2, the clips 38 are slip ed upon the coil, and the gage-arm 16 raise and the wire cut. The clamping member 28 is then closed upon and locked to the shelf 8, and the movable section is raised by hand to the position 01:, Fig. 5, where it engages the abuttlng plates 31 and upon continued movement orces the shelf 8 and clamping member 28 downward until the osition 1 Fig. 5, is reached, whereupon t e clamping member 28 is unlatched and permitted to fall into the position indicated in Fi 7. The coil is now completely shaped an ready for removal from the form, which is done by throwing the handle 27 to the right to remove the fingers 23 from the path of the coil and then slipping the long side of the coil up by hand over the shouldered projection 2 and the short side down off the terraces 6. The clips 38 will remain upon the coil until it is taped or applied to the armature.
I do not desire to restrict myself to the par ticular form of construction of parts herein described and shown, since it is ap arent that they may be changed and modifierfwithout departing from my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A sectional coil-former upon which a coil in the form of a reentrant polygon may be wound, and' provisions whereby one section and the portion of the coil carried thereby may be moved angularly relatively to the other section and the portion of the coil carried thereon.
2. A coil-former comprising a main section provided with a yoke-shaped frame for receiving the longer portion of the coil, and a movable section hinged to the main section and provided with a yokesha ed frame for receiving the shorter portion 0 the coil.

3. A coil-former comprising two relatively revoluble sections for supporting the longer and shorter portions of the coil, and means for supporting the ofiset bends of the coil in- 5 dependent of the positions of the said sections.
4. A coil-former comprising a main section and a movable section for supporting the opposite sides of the coil, a shelf hinged to both 10 of said sections, and a clamping member forretaining the ofiset bends of the coil hinged to said shelf. 5.
