R. J. GOEPPINGBR. ADJUSTING SET SCREW.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 22, 1905. I

fiwerytor,
- in their adjusted position's.
To. all-whom it may cort'eei'firs- 'St'ate'of FINGER; acitizen-o ttheUnited States, resid- .-i ng at' Piggptt; in the county O'FClayand ansas', have invented a new'and useful Adjusting Set-Screw; of which the fol-1 lowing isjaspecificationu r r This inventioiizrelates to .s'et screws. 1-
. The object -.of the invention is in a; ready and practieal' ma'nner to, facilitate the aocu rate adjustment of'an two-objects 'with.relaw tion to each other an to hold thein'securely.
' Withtheabove and other objects in view,-
"as will appear as the natureor'fithe invention is better understood, the same consists in the .tlon and combination of parts as will be" hereinafter fully claimed In (the accompanying drawings, forming apartQof.thisf. specificatipn, and in whichhke characters 56f reference indicate correspondparts fFigure '1 is a view elevation of one form of set-screw constructed in accord- 'a'nce the present invention, showing it.
combined with-two objects'tobe adjusted relatively to each other.
screw shown-in'Fi .1. i al; 10.1 itud n s i n l Fi Z'i's a vertical longitudinal sectional view t, rou h the set- -views 1 of two as sh evice embodies an adjusting-screw 1 d" a locking-screw -2 These parts" are lshefwngcombined with two objects 'A and B which may r present two lates,'one of which -is-to be adjusted relative y to the other and bejheld; securely in such adjustment. The
d usting-screw *1 i provided with a lCflgitulnal bore and with external threads that eniflge'a thre d spe li n the 9733'? the wer end of-the adjusting-screw being truncated-cone shaped and disposed in a seat bin the object B. The bore? of the adjustingserew is en ga ed by. the locking-screw, the
portion of the att er that engages the bore bering smooth and the portion disposed exteriorly of the adjusting-screw being threaded and projects through a threaded "orifice in the object Band has combined with it a clamping-nut 3. The upper end of the screw 1 is provided with a polygonal head 4 and the'upper end otthe screw 2 with-a similar head 5.-
To efi'ec't adjustment of the part relatively to the part B in the form of the invention describedjt'he nut 3 is first loosened, then" must-is; ass-5w;
sri ei ei e e i t rhpphcatiiin' filed has; 2 2, 1 9 (l5. ,.Serial ;No.'126 61492 Figs. 3 an .4, are ver-" e form of the invention-shown in Fig.
turned until the objects are appropriately adjusted relatively t'oeach other, after which the scr'ew2 and nut 3 are again tightened, therethe screw' is loosened 'ar'id thescrew l' is by firmly-securing thepartsin their adjusted *positi'onsi. While 'the "adjusting-screw is shown asrestingina seat'in the object Byit. I
v, are be understood that the and of the: nut
nlay be'flat and bear: directly upon the saidi.
.- in the remf the invati n shown iii Fig. l
; 3 the adjiisting-screw 6 is provided with BX? ternal. threads, as shown in-Fig" -1 but it's bore is threaded throughout a greater portion of-its len th and is engaged by the threaded 'portion' 0 the locking-screw8, the bore atthelower end' of-the adjustingscrew or that opj posite the head 9 being devoid'of threads, while that portion of the locking-screw that engages. the screw portion of I. the bore is threaded. Theadjusting-screw has a polygonal head 10and earriesa clampin -nut 11 To effect adjustment of the'parts and B with this form-of the invent'iomthe nut 11 is loosened-and the. screw Sis ja'lso loosened,
afterwhich the screw 6 is rotated toi-efiefct the requisite adjustment, and when this has been secured the screw S -will, beturnedto its proper position and the nut 11' will be. tightened. In this form of 'the inventionthe lowefend-of the adjusting-screw is also cone.-
shaped and engages-a seat in the object'B; but this is not. essential, as the seat may be dispensed with and the lower end of the screw maybe made flat andbear directly 4 upon the Object B.
In the form of the invention shown-in Fig 7' there is a'c'ombined adjusting-screwand locking-screwpresented in one element, to
'efiect which the lower end of the adjustirigscrew 12'is reduced and threaded to form a lockingscrew 13, with. which is combined a. clamping-nut 14. The exterior surface of. the adjustin screw is threaded to. en age a threaded ori co in the object A, while t e ob' ject Bis provided with a seat to receive the lower "end of the adjusting-screw, which in this instanceis shown as flat. To, efiiect adjustrnents of the objects A andB relatively to each other in this form of the invention, the nut 14 is loosened, the screw 12 is turned in the appropriate direction ,and when the de sired adjustment has been effected the'nut. 14 is again tightened.
In each form of the invention there is combined with the adjusting-screw 1 a lockingnut 15, which by being turned into engagement with the object o and 14 in holding all the parts in the position to'whioh they are moved.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that each form'of the invention herein described is; peculiarlyadap'ted for securing the function designed and will in a certain and positive manner efiect accurate adjust- -HI each of the screws and on aging the objects.
'ment of two objects relatively to each other and hold them in such adjustment.
Havin thus described the invention, what is claime' is 1. The combination with two objects to be adjusted, of a relatively large adjusting-- screw carried by one of the objects and abutting the other object, a relatively small lockg-screw, and a clamping-nut carried by :2. The combination wit two objects to be adjusted, one of which is provided with a threaded opening and the other with a seat,
of a relativel large adjustin -screw engaging the threa ed opening and t e seat, a rela tively small locking-screw, and a clampingnut carried by each of the screws.
3. device of the class described comprising an externally-threaded adjusting-screw rovided with an internal partially-threaded ore extending entirely throu h it, a lockingscrew rojecting through the ore, and a nut carried by the latter screw.
- 4. A device-of the class described comprising an externally-threaded adjusting-screw of the same diameter throughout its len th and provided with an internallv-threa ed bore, a locking-screw projecting through the bore, and a locking-nut carried by each of the two screws.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses V RUDOLPH JACOB GOEPPINGER.
