IMPROVEMENT IN MOULDS FOR MAKlH G AGUPUNCTUBEINSTRUMENTS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: a
Be it known that I, Anson RQ BROWN, M. D., of Albion, in the county of Calhoun, and State of Michigan,
have invented anew Setting-Mould for the Construction of the Puncturing-Qlanger-Heads in Acupuncture; Instruments; .and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eia'ct description of the same,. I
reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is an elevation in section of the setting-mould and enclosed plunger-head,- as cast therein.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the former, composing a part of the mould.
Figure 3' represents the plunger-head and stem, armed with the acupuncturiug-lanoets, and detached from the mould. l
. Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
The necessity for a special mould in which to cast the plungers of acupuncture-instruments, andto set the puncturiu'g-lancets -within such casting, arises from the great difiiculty and expense of adjusting them by any ordinary mechanical manipulation, for the lancets are arranged in pairs, and converge together untillthey just touch eachothenafter the fashion of the blades of a drawing-pen, so as to deposit the irritating-fluid in the punctures, in a manner somewhat analogous to that in which the ink is deposited by the said pen on'the paper.
The object of my invention is to dispense with all hand-skill in the setting and adjusting the lancts in-the plunger-heads themselves, and toset them up and adjust them within a mould, in permanent sockets, and in a ready and'undeviating manner, so that when the melted metal is poured'into the mould to form the plunger and stem, it will flow around the butt-ends of the lancets, and when the plunger is removed, the lancets will be perfcctly adjusted, ready for use, and set firmly in the metal. p w
The manner in which I construct the former-disk, represented at F, and constituting the most'important part of the mould, (FigureL) is to erect a turned mandrel, provided with two thin disk-plates, at a proper distance apart, the upper plate being perforated with slots, as seen in Figure 2, to receive the body of the lance-ts, and the lower plate having slight indentations, to receive the two converging points 'in'one depression.
A casing is then formed around the plates, and soft metal is poured in around .the lancets, which, in this case, merely act as cores to form the mortises in said former, in which mortises the blades of similar lancets are inserted, to ca's't the metal around their projecting butt-ends, as aforesaid, in the construction of the plunger and stem, indicated respectively by theletters E and B. i
I generally construct the mould for the plungers of metal, and bore out the cavities, both for the reception of the casting, and also for the insertion of the former, in which the lancets are placed, in the mortises, cast as heretofore'explained,
C is a vent-wire, and D is a wire core, ifor casting a holes in the plunger, to receiver. springffor throwing said plunger back after the lancets have acted. v v
It will be seen that the former, F, is furnished at the bottom with a soft-metal plate, indicated atG. This plate is designed to support or gauge the points of the iancets, shown by thevfigures 1, 2, 3, 4,'&c., so that they will lie on a true plane when placed in the m ortises, with their butt-ends projecting upwarvds into the mould,
as in fig. 1.
Soft metal is poured in at the sprue-holes to fill the mould, and, when cold, the casting and former are withdrawn, and the lancets are sprung out of the angular mortises in the former, leaving the cast plunger with the lancets truly cast in it, as seen in Figure 3. I
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is this I claim the former, F, having slits or mortises east through it, as described, to receive the blades of puncturing-lancets, 1, 2, 3,850., in combination with a mould for casting the plungers E B, substantially 'as and for the purpose specified.
