Description
PATENTED JULY 24, 1906. J. KUSS.
SPRING MATTRESS,
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 2, 1906.
JOHN KUSS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SPRING-MATTRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 24, 1906.
\ Application filed January 2, 1906- Serial No. 294,238.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN KUss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Spring-Mattresses, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to spring-mattresses and its object is to provide asimple, practical, and. inexpensive form of mattress which will provide an elevated spring-rest for the head.
' In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a mattress embodying my present invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are views of details of construction.
The mattress shown in the drawings comprises a rectangular structure conveniently formed by side pieces 1 1 and end pieces 2 and 3, fitted together to form a frame which is provided with springs 4 4,held in position by cross-strips 5 5. At the head of the mattress I provide a spring-rest, conveniently formed by a pivoted swinging frame composed of a back piece 6, side pieces 7 7, and a front piece 8. The latter is pivoted at 9 to the sides of the mattress, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The rear or back end of this frame is provided with a link 10, Figs. 2 and 3, which extends down and is pivotally connected with the upper cross-rod 3. Springs 11, 12, and 13 are interposed between this frame and the mattress, the frame being provided with cross-strips 5 5, similar to the mattress construction for these springs.
Thus it will be seen that a spring head-rest is provided by this pivoted frame which serves to support the head and dispense with a pillow, if desired.
By connecting the forward end with the mattress it is held stationary, and the spring also is taken up by a slight backward movement of the rest when it is depressed.
Changes and modifications can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is- 1. A spring-mattress comprising a mat tress-body having upper .and lower frames and springs interposed between the same, and a spring head-rest comprising a rectangular frame having its forward edge pivoted to the upper frame of the mattress-body and its rear edge connected with said upper frame, and springs interposed between said pivoted {)rame and the upper frame of the mattress- 2. A spring-mattress comprising a mattress-body consisting of upper and lower frames and springs interposed between the same, and aspring head-rest comprising a rectangular frame having its forward edge pivoted to the upper frame of the mattress-body, links extending between the rear edge of said frame and said upper frame of the mattress, and springs interposed between said frames.
In witness whereof Ihereunto subscribe my name this 23d day of December, A. D. 1905.
JOHN KUSS.
Witnesses:
