l STAIRWAY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 24, 1906.
Application filed March 1l, 1905. Serial No. 249.661.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HENRY STICHT, of No. 4836 Sherbrooke street, in the town of Westmount, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvenients in Stairways; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same.
My invention relates particularly to the means for connecting the strin ers of a stairway to the newel-posts; and it as for its 0bject to provide a connecting device whereby a Stringer can be rigidly connected to a-newelpost without the use of visible bolts, angles, or other connections by manipulating the same from the interior of one end of, preferably, the newel-post.
The invention may be said, briefly, to consist of one or more keys carried rigidly by one of the parts to be connected and adapted to project through slots in the other part, the side of such key or keys adjacent to the part upon which it is carried being beveled, a
ocking-bar constructed to present a portion to fit between the beveled side of thekeyor keys and the part through which the latter project, and means whereby such lockingar is adjusted-for the the parts together.
For full comprehension, however, of my invention reference mustbe had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference characters indicate the same parts, and wherein- Fi ure,1 1 is a vertical sectional view of a newe -post with a stairway-stringer connected thereto according `to my invention, the section being taken on line A A, Fi 2. Fig. 2 is a similarjview taken on line B Fig. 1.
The Stringer b and the newel-post c, which is hollow and has a rigid transverse plate c near its lower end, are of usual construction.
According to my invention the ends of the Stringer (one end onl of the'latter is shown) are constructed with preferably a pair of keys d of T form, having the edges of the flanges thereof adjacent to the Stringer bevpurpose of tightening' eled, as at and slots c2 are formed in the side of the newel-post to allow of the keys d being inserted therethrough, while a lockingbar e, slotted, as at e', is )fitted over the keys as they project into the interior of the newelpost, and the lower end thereof is diminished and screw-threaded to project through a peroration in the bottom plate c and receive a nut e2.
In assembling the parts of a stairway according to my invention the keys dare first inserted through the slots c2. The locking-bar e is then fitted in place and the nut e2 is tightened, thereby wedging the portions of such bar above the slots therein tightly between the beveled sides of the keys and the side through which they project of the` post.
What I claim is as follows:
1. Means rigidly connecting a Stringer and a hollow post together, consisting of a device carried by the stringer and adapted to eX- tend through a slot in the post, such device having an inclined bearing-face, ,a slidable locking device adapted to be moved into locking engagement with the said bearingface and means whereby the said locking device is moved to and from locking engagement with the first-mentioned device. 2. Means rigidly connecting a Stringer to a hollow newel-post consisting of a key carried by the end of the Stringer and presenting a beveled face toward the end of the Stringer and adapted to extend through a slot in the post, a slotted slidable locking-bar presenting a portion engaging between the beveled face of the key and the wall of the post throu h which the key projects and means where y the said locking-bar is operated from the end of the newelost.
In testimony whereof have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN HENRY sTIcHT.
