A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
APPARATUS Fon Specification of Letters Patent.
REMOVING DUST.
ratented July 17, 1906.
Original application filed March 16, 1903, Serial No. 147,968. Divided and this application filed February 2l, 1906. Serial No. 302,1 82.
To all whom, it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, DAVID T. KENNEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the borough of North Plainfield, county ot Somerset, and State of New Jersoy, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Removing Dust, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to 'a hand implement or cleaner to be used in connection with dustreinoving systems such as are, for example, operated on the vacuum principle and set forth in detail in my a plication for Letters Patent ofif'the Unite States, Serial No. 147,968, filed March 16, 1903, of which this application is a divisional application.
The hand implement com )rises a suctionnozzle, which is provided with a narrow inletslot the mouth of which lies in a plane tangential to rollers, which are also carried by the suction-nozzle.
The invention relates to the combination 'of these parts with a handle and suctiontube with a communicating passage-Way through a .hinge connection betweeen the h andle and nozzle, as hereinafter set forth and particularly claimed. l
One object of the invention is to provide a cleaner of simple and inexpensive construc-A tion consisting of a suctlon-nozzle and combin'ed handle and suction-tube, which have a hinge connection by which the two portions are connected, so that gravity of the nozzle portion will present the slot of the nozzle to the surface of the object to be cleaned with-f out regard to the angle at which the handle to hold the handle at a hi lier an le when c eaningiloors in confined p aces, wile a lo quired in cleaning under furniture.
Another object of the invention is to conibine with thel hinge connection between the nozzle and handle a communicating passageway, so that vacuum in the nozzle may be produced by exhaust through a hose, which is connected to the handle instead of directly to the nozzle, so that free adjustment of the nozzle to the ob'ect to be cleaned will not be` interfered with y the weight or drag of th hose. A'
Another object is to providexxin a' sin able and inexpensive manner rollersg'and' supports for the rollers, so tli;
may be freely moved over th w angle is I'e-.
cleaned and thel nozyle properly alined and presented to the .ft-arpet other object to be cleaned.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings,
1 is a perspective View of a cleaner embody- -ing my invention. Fig. 2 is a lan view of the head of the cleaner, partly roken away at one of the hin e connections. Fig. 3 is a view of the head rom underneatli.` Fig. 4. is a vertical section on the line :e4 w* of Fig. 2.
The cleaner, as illustrated, comprises a tubular handle 1, which is connected to a T- head 2, and this head is joined to a nozzle portion 3 through unions 4 4, forming a iinge-joint axis parallel with the mouth of a slot 5 in tlie contact-surface 6 of the nozzle portion. There is a communicating passageway through the hinge-joi nt from the slot to nozzle portion.4
The construction and arrangement are such that the contact-surface is tangential to the circumference of the rollers at the points Where they touch the floor. The contact-surfacewill therefore be alined with and rest squarely on the floor and in proper relation for the operation of the cleaner irrespective of the an fular position of the handle. When the hande iswferticah it can be used in cleanets, and with the handle at a low angle it can be used. to clean floors under furniture. It can also be used with the handle directed upwardly for cleaning shelves. A hose 8 is coupled to the other end of the handle from the T-liead.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetvte/rs Patent of the United States, is-
A cleaner comprising a suction-nozzle provided with rollers and a narrow inlet-slot the mouth of which lies in a plane tangential to the rollers, combined handle and suctiontube, and a hinge connection between the nozzle and handle having a communicating pssage-way therethrough in the line of th ge` axis, lsubstantially as described.
