Description

DANIEL M SltIllRS,A OF NEW YQRK, N. Yr.
Letters Patent No. 82,650, dated September 29, 1868.'
IMPROVED TUMBLER-WASHBR.
dlp tlpmle referat tu im ipse tters tat-ent :mh mating wat if tige same.
To ALL WHOMI'T MAY coNonRN; v
-Beit known that I, DANIEL M. SOMERS, of the oity'county, and` State of New York, have invented a new and usefullmprovement in Tumbler-Washers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description,
reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, and which represents a sectional elevation of my improved tumbler-washer.
My improvement in tumbler-washers consists in atumbler-holder or inside-washer, of peculiar construction, being made withrribs or pendent arms, for-ming a frame, so shaped and constituted as to give it an elastic char'- acter, and wedge-`presentation to the tumbler, for'operation in connection with an automatic valve, and so that, in seatingA the tumbler on said frame, it is readily fitted thereon, or to itsplace of rest, without danger of break-v age, and free from all liability of afterwards tipping o the same during such single adjust-ment of it, acting both by side pressure and weighton the frame, and serving, at the same time, t0 quickly open the valve, to admit a streamer streams of water, for play on or against vthe `inside of the tumbler; in the-.arrangement of a turbine within the supply-stem, and relativelyY to the-discharge-orieesot' the outside-washerrto give arotary motion tothe latter, so that the w'ater therefrom may be uniformly directed upon the tumblers, regardless of the variable force thereof. Said invention also covers a'bouquet-vase, or its equivalent, at top of the centralV stem, constructed to form a valve for control of the water tothe outside sprinkler, and made.to rotate by means of a turbine arranged within the stem. i
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A represents the counter on which the'machine stands, and the basin of the apparatus. 'Arranged within, the latter is a central upwardly-projecting stem, C, here shown as made up of a base-portion, a', cylinder or box, b, and upper portion, @formed of or -with alvase or flower-holder,
d, and outside-tumbler sprinkler or washer, e, said upperA portion, with its vase and sprinkler, being made to revolve, on opening escape-apertures f, in the-cylinder, by the action of'a turbine, g, arranged within said cylinder, and made fast to a hollow supply-shaft or revolving pipe, L, that carries the sprinkler and vase, the latter, or its stem, being made to form a valve, z', on top of the shaft, for, by screwing down or partly unscrewing the vase orstem, shutting off, oi' opening, or regulating the supply of water to the sprinkier,'and, when said valve is closed, without, if desired, (by reason of the continuous open connection of the turbine with the shaftva) stopping the rotation of the bouquet-vase, that thus forms both an ornament and valve to the sprinkler. The base-portion, a, of the central stemC, has any suitable'number of channelsJc, or the basinmay be equivalentrly grooved or constructed, to carry olf the waste or soiled water from the basiuinto a common discharge-- passage or main outlet-pipe, D, which, by the arrangement, of the inlet-pipe or passage E, for water, under pressure within said common outlet, is the only part of thestructure' that. requiresa hole to be made in` the counter, so that when the apparatus is removed, there is but one hole toplug. This reduces disiigurement of the counter, as compared with other arrangements involving separate openings, that is, orte for the inlet and the-other for the outlet. i
vTheinlet-pipe E, which derives its supply, say,`by abranch, l, below the counter, is in open communication -with the hollow shaft h; also, by branch or lateral openings, with pipes m, above the counter, for conveying water to the tumbler-holders or inside-Washers, which are 'arranged within the basin, around vthe central stem G, rso that the same sprinkler, e, that, in revolving, has a centrifugal action, to eect a more perfect washing of the outside of the tumblers, acts ina uniform manner over a series of holders or tumblers lying thereon.
These tumbler-holders or inside-washers it is preferred to construct as follows: F is a stem, screwing on to the top of the bent extremity of the-pipe m, and made with a. vertical passage, n, up through it, in communication with the pipe m. On'and. around this stemare attached, at its-top, so as to give them a pendent character, any desired number, but preferably three, ribs, Gr G. One, G', of these ribs -is jointed, as at o, to the stem F, while the others may be permanently attached thereto at their upper ends, but all, by reason of their construction or mode of suspens-ion, are more or less ofi an elastic character, so as to form a spring-frame, as it were,
and so shaped or hung as to present a wedge-ooniguration or conical formation to the whole, which, in connectionr with the elastic character of the ribs, facilitates the se'ating of the tumblei` over the frame, and prevents'breakage of the-glass; also, restrains the tumbler from tipping off its bolder, the tumbler, in being adjusted to its seat, acting both by weight" an'd side =pressure on the ribs. Tiiejointcd rih G', under this action of the tumbler, and Whilethe latter is being let down to its seat, operates, as it is forced inwards, toquickly open the valve H, to admit water for washing the `insideof the tumbler, aA spring,1, serving to close saidvalve, and to throw the vjointed rib G outwards, when or as the tumbleris being removed from its holder, the spring, 7', also answering to give increased elasticity torsaid'rib.
What is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. A tumbler-holder, consisting of a tubular stem, F, with fixed pendentv arms, G, and a jointed arm, G', connected with and operating the valve H, in an automatic manner, substantially as described.
2. The arrangement of a turbine within the supply-stem, and relatively to the discharge-orifices of the outside-washer, to givea rotary motion to the iatter, substantially as shown and described set forth.
3. The combination of the vase d, forming a valve, z', with a rotary tumbler-sprinkler, substantially as set forth.
, for the purpose D. M. SOMERS. Witnesses:
