Specification of Letters Patent.

To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsTAv TILGNER, a citi- Zen ofthe United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rollers for Barrel-Scrubbers, of which the following is a specification.
The roller of this invention is intended, primarily, for use in barrel-scrubbers for imparting rotation to the barrels which rest upon the roller during the scrubbing operation. The barrel is revolved by the frictional contact of the roller upon the surface of the barrel, for which reason it is desirable or necessary that the frictional surface of the roller be formed of rubber or similar material, and as hitherto constructed the rubber of such wheels has been quickly worn down by the Weight of the barrels, which when full of water sometimes weigh as much as two hundred pounds, and the continued pressure of successive barrels on the rollers tends not only to wear away the surfaceof the rubber, but also to compress the rubber against the metal of the reinforcing-flanges of the roller, which cuts into the rubber and quickly renders the roller unfit for use.
The object of the present invention is to construct a wheel having an inner or permanent elastic cushion and an outer or frictional ring surrounding the elastic cushion, which is adapted when worn out to be removed without displacing the inner cushion, thereby 0bviating the necessity for providing an entire elastic body for the roller and at the same time maintaining in the highest degree the elastic or resilient properties of the roller.
The invention consists in the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional plan view taken on line 1 1 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 a cross-sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
The roller is mounted on a shaft 1 and consists of a hub 2, having a polygonal body 3, preferably in the form of a pentagon, which provides an eilicient angular formation to provide against slipping of the material carried thereby, and the hub near one end is provided with a rigid circular flange 4 having at stated intervals a series of inwardlyprojecting teeth 5, intermediate of which are a series of bolt-holes 6. The polygonal body of the hub terminates at each end in circular collars 7 and 8, respectively, which surround the shaft and increase the bearing-surface of the hub. The collar 8 is encircled by an adjustable ring 9, which corresponds in shape to the rigid flange 4* and is provided with teeth 10 and bolt-holes 11 in alinement with the teeth and bolt-holes on the fixed flange. The flange and ring, which form, in effect, companion flanges, are connected by means of bolts 12, having on their ends nuts 13,which permit of the adjustment of the bolts. The hub is held in fixed position on the shaft by means of a set-screw 13a passing through the collar 8 .or by any other well-known means.
Surrounding the polygonal body of the hub is an inner cushion 14, preferably of rubber and'of less transverse diameter than the diameter of the inclosing flanges, and said cushion-is provided in its periphery with a plurality of recesses 15 and 16, alternately arranged and in line with the bolts and teeth, respectively. Surrounding the inner rubber cushion is an outer frictional ring 17 of sufficient transverse diameter to project outwardly a considerable distance beyond the inclosing flanges, and the outer ring is providedl with a plurality of inwardly-projecting lugs 18 and 19, which enter into the recesses 15 and 16, respectively, in the inner cushion.,
The lugs 18 have the bolts 12 passing therethrough, and the lugs 19 have the teeth 5 and 10 entering thereinto, which arrangement of lugs and recesses holds the outer ring in firm contact with the inner cushion and inproper relation to the outer inclosing flanges. The outer ring has a beveled periphery 20, which provides a bearing-surf ace for the barrels and is beveled to conform in a general way to the longitudinal curvature of the barrels.
In use the inner cushion 'will be utilized for a long period of time without renewal, and the method of securing the inner cushion in place prevents any slipping or wabbling during the revolution of the shaft and at the same time provides the necessary resiliency to prevent undue jolts or jars as the barrels are delivered onto the rollers. When the outer frictional ring becomes unduly worn by continued usage, it can be removed by 'withdrawing the bolts and lifting off the adjustable ring preparatory to the insertion IOC of a new ring in place. After a new ring has been inserted the nuts on the bolts are screwed down, which retracts the adjustable ring and compresses it tightly against the inner cushion and the inner portion of the outer ring, compressing both the cushion and ring to any desired degree and causing the Oppositely-disposed teeth 5 and l() to bite into the inwardly-projecting lugs 19 of the outer ring, which further serves to reinforce the ring to prevent its being stretched out of place by the weight of the barrels. It is preferred to make the polygonal body portion of the hub of less thickness than the thickness of the cushion and ring to allow for adjustment of the adjustable ring along the round collar S.
Although the invention has been described as usable more particularly in barrel-washers, it is obvious that it can be used for other purposes and in other places in, which it is desirable to provide a collar having highlyresilient qualities and one in which the bearing-surface can be renewed from time to time without renewing the entire body of the roller. Although the cushion and ring are described as being of rubber, it is obvious that some other elastic material having properties similar to rubber might be employed without departing from the spirit of the invention, and it will be understood that when rubber is spokenof other substances having similar properties are intended to be included thereby.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A roller having a hub provided with an outwardly-extending flange near one end, an adjustable ring, bolts connecting the flange with the adjustable ring, an inner cushion between the flange and the ring, and an outer resilient ring surrounding the inner cushion, the resilient ring and cushion being adapted to be compressed by the adjustable ring, substantially as described.
2. In a roller, the combination of a hub provided near one end with a rigid fiange, an adjustable ring surrounding the hub, bolts connecting the adjustable ring with the rigid flange, an inner cushion, an outer elastic ring having the bolts passed therethrough, and nuts on the ends of the bolts for moving the adjustable ring to clamp the cushion and elastic ring between the adjustable ring and the flange, substantially as described.
3. In a roller, the combination of a hub provided near one end with a rigid flange, an adjustable ring surrounding the hub, bolts connecting the adjustable ring with the rigid flange, an inner cushion, an outer elastic ring having the bolts passed therethrough, nuts on the ends ofthe bolts for moving the adjustable ring to clamp the cushion and elastic ring between the adjustable ring and the flange, and teeth on the adjustable ring and flange adapted to be embedded in the elastic ring, substantially as described.
4. In a roller, the combination of a hub having a polygonal body, an outwardly-extending rigid flange, an adjustable ring surrounding the hub, an inner cushion surrounding the polygonal body and provided around its periphery with recesses, an outer elastic ring surrounding the inner cushion and provided with lugs adapted to enter the recesses, companion teeth on the ring and flange adapted to be embedded in elastic lugs, and bolts connecting the rigid flange and adjustable ring, and passing 'through alternate lugs on the elastic ring for moving the adjustable ring and clamping the elastic ring and inner cushion in place, substantially as described.
