Be it known that 1, WILLIAM D. FLYNN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spray, in the county of Rockingham and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to buckles, is a division of my application Serial No. 262,519. filed May 26, 1905, and is particularly adapted for use for suspenders; and the object thereof isto construct a buckle in a manner as hereinafter more specifically described, whereby thejaw-carrying plate is provided with means to secure a strip of suitable material in position, said strip of material constituting an upper and a lower adjusting finger-piece or tab, said adusting finger-pieces or tabs facilitating the adjusting of the buckle when occasion requires to lengthen or shorten the suspender; furthermore, imparts a neat'appearance to the buckle and at the same time lessens the cost of manufacture.

The invention further aims to provide a buckle for suspenders which shall be simple in its construction, readily adjustable, durable, strong, efficient in its use, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, andparticularly pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a suspenderbuckle constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a rear View of the front plate of the buckle. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view showing the suspender-strap attached to the buckle.

Referring to the drawings by reference characters, 1 denotes the front plate of the buckle, which at the top thereof is notched, as at 2, and then bent upon itself, as at 3, so as to form at each upper corner of the plate an eye, said eyes adapted to receive the ends of the strap-loop 4. The said strap-loop 4 extends at the rear of the plate 1 and has the ends thereof pivotally mounted in the eyes at Between the notches 2 the plate at its top is bent rearwardly at an angle, as at 5, and the said angularly-disposed portion 5 has the edge thereof serrated, as at 6, and the said portion 5 consitutes a gripping-j aw.

The strap-loop 4 is provided with a depending portion 4, to which the end 4 of the suspender-strap 4 is secured, and said depending portion 4 is adapted to prevent the end 4 of the strap 4 from slipping around the strap-loop 4, so as to retain the end 4 of the strap in the position in which it has been placed, as shown in Fig. 4. The end 4 of the suspender-strap 4 is secured to the straploop by attaching the parts 4 and 4 together by a row of stitching 4. The depending portion 4 acts asa means with the end 4 of the suspender-strap to retain the strap-loop 4 in a perpendicular position when the front plate 1 of the buckle is shifted in a manner as hereinafter set forth to release the grippingj aw from the suspender-strap 4, so that the length of the suspender can be regulated.

The front plate 1 is slotted in a transverse direction, as at 7 8, forming thereby abar which is provided centrally of its innerface with the piercing-barbs 10.

The reference character 11 denotes a strip of suitable material which when in position forms the upper and lower adjusting fingers or tabs 12 13, so that the buckle can be adjusted to regulate the length of the suspender-strap. The strip of material 11 may be of any suitable length and is passed upwardly through the slots 7 8 at the rear of the bar 9, and the said strip is adapted to be pierced by the barbs 10, which action on the part of the barbs 10 retains the strip 11 in position.

When the buckle is in its clamping position, the jaw formed by the angularly-disposed portion 5 engages the suspender-strap, the plate 1 then extending substantially in parallelism with respect to the suspenderstrap. To release the jaw, the plate 1 is shifted to a position at an angle with respect to the suspender-strap and lifted somewhat upwardly. This action positions the angularly-disposed portion 5 substantially in parallelism with respect to the suspender-strap and moves the serrated edges of the said angularly-disposed portion out of engagement with the suspender-strap. The buckle can then be adjusted to increase the length or decrease the length of the suspender by pulling the tab 12 or the tab 13. To increase the length of the suspender, the tab 13 is pulled downwardly, which carries the buckle therewith, and to decrease the length of the suspender the tab 12 is pulled upwardly, which carries the buckle therewith. When the proper adjustment has been had, the plate 1 is shifted to a position substantially in parallelism with respect to the Suspender-strap, which positions the gripping-jaw at an angle with respect to the suspender-strap and causes the serrated edges of the gripping-jaw to enter the strap and securely clamp the strap to the buckle, so as to prevent movement of the buckle until the plate 1 is shifted to release the jaw from the strap in a manner as heretofore stated.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V 1. A .buckle comprising a front plate provided with a pair of slots forming therebya transversely-extending bar, said bar having inwardly-extending barbs and said plate further provided with a pair of notches and that portion of the plate adjacent to the notches bent to form a pair of eyes and that portion of the plate interposed between the notches bent at an angle and having its edge toothed, forming thereby a gripping-jaw, and a straploop pivotally mounted in said eyes.

2. A buckle comprising a front plate provided with a pair of slots forming thereby a transversely-extending bar, said bar having inwardly-extending barbs and said plate further provided with a pair of notches and that portion of the plate adjacent to thenotches bent to form apair of eyes and that portion of the plate interposed between the notches bent at an angle and having its edge toothed, forming thereby a gripping-jaw, and a straploop pivotally mounted in said eyes, com-- bined with a strip of material extending through said slots and engaging said barbs and constituting a pair of adj usting-tabs.
