APPLICATION FILED MAY 5, 1966.
AMAA? aat, ,4 lucana? is the main frame of my novel fender.
UNITED 'STATES PAIENT OFF-ICE.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented July 1o, 190e.
mutation mea May s. 190e. snm No. 916.332.
To all wwm z't may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. E'. SEVRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fenders, of which vthe following is a specification.
My invention pertains to fenders for use on street-railway cars; and it contemplates the lprovision of fenders adapted to be permanently applied to the front and rear ends of a car and constructed with'aview of normally resting in'a raisedposition against the dashboards, where they will be out of the way and not liable to cause accidents and of being expeditiously lowered when necessity demands, so as to pick u a person in the way of the car and effectua ly preclude the possibility of such person getting under the car-wheels.
Other advantageous featuresof my invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the accompanying drawingls, forming part of this specification, in whic Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a portion of a street-railway car equipped with one of my novel fenders, the verticallyswinging member of the fender being shown in its lower position. Fig.A 2 is a detail vertical transverse section showing the swinging member by full lines in its upper position y andby dotted lines in its lower position, and
Fig. 3 comprises enlarged disconnected perspective views of partsof the fender.
Similar letters designate corresponding' parts Ain all of the Views of the drawings, re-
err'ng to which- A is a portion of the body of a street-.rail` way car, which may be,` and preferably is, of the ordinary well-known construction, angl? e said frame B comprises side bars a, fixedly connected to the sides of the end portion of the body A and having bifurcations b in their forward ends, c and a cross-bar c of circular formin cross-section, having flat end por- -tions d let into the bifurcations b of the side bars 1l andixedly connected to the same. About the said cross-bar c are coiled springs C, which are connected at their outer ends to the bar. and are designed to serve 4a hereinafter pointedjout.
- '.D is the vertically-swinging member of the fender. This member D comprises a frame e 'and a netf thereon, and it is provided on the purpose rear fender is always -1n a raised position, and
upper ends of the end frame-bars with eyes g, which loosclv receive the cross-bar cl of the main frame as best shown in Fig 1. Said member D is also provided in the upper bar of its frame e with apertures h, which receive the inner ends of the springs C, and hence it will be apparent that when the member D is swung up the springs C will be placed under tension.
s Eis a `vertically-Swingin catch fulcrumed at an intermediate point o its length in the dashboard of the car and havinga toe 7c at its forward end adapted to engage and hold the member D when said member is swung up against the tension of the springs C.
F is a pedal-lever fulcrumed on the carplatform, and G is a rod interposed between and connecting the pedal-lever and the rear arm of the catch E.v By virtue of this construction it will be seen that the member D 'may be secured in a raised position, as shown by`fulllines in Fig. 2, where it will be out of the way and will not be liable to give rise to an accident, and it will also be seen that in the event of a person getting on the track in front of the car the motorman is enabled to release the member D by sim ly pressing the lever F down with his foot. EVhen the meme ber D is thus released, the springs C under tension, as before described, will o erate to eX editiously throw the member own and hold it in close proximity `to the pavement, so as to assure the member picking the person' up.
H H are the side guards of the fender. These side guards comprise frames p, Xedly connected'to the sides of the end portion of the car-body, and netsw', connected to\ and carried by the said frames, and they are reinforced by braces .8, interposed between and connected to the bottom of the platform and the lower bars of their frames p.
As-will be observed by reference to Fig. 1, "l
ofthe fixed side guards H, and consequentlyv it is impossible for a person to ass the swinging member D at either side t ereof and get under the wheels in that way.
` It will be gathered from the foregoing that when a car is equipped at bothends with my novel fenders the swinging member of the hence is not liable to catch the dresses of women getting on or off the cai-,or otherwise cause accidents. ,It will also be gatherec IOO , is simple, compact, and inexpensive in construction and embodies nov delicate parts. such as are liable to get out of orderl after a Short period of use. i
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire-to secure by Letters Pat ent, is- Y 1. In a fender, the combination of a carbody having a slotted dashboard, a main frame connected ,to the carbody and having a cross-ban' avvertically-swinging member comprising a Jframe, pivotaily connected to said cross-bar and a net connected tovand carried by said frame, one .or more coiled springs arranged on and connected atv one end to the cross-bar ofthe main frame and connected at their opposite vends to the ve'rtically-swinging member, a vertically-swinging catch kextending through the slot of. the
dashboard and having 'g toevon .its fom-1rd,
arm arranged to engage the verticailyswin ing member when the same 1s raised, apeda nection between said pedal-lever and the rear arm ofthe catch.,v
'lever mounted Ion the. car-body, and a' con-v 2. Ina fender, the combination of a carbody having a dashboardya main'rame connected to the car-body and having a cross-bar, side guards xediyconn'ected to f the car-body and said mainrameand re.-
spectiveiy comprising a frame, and a net carried thereby, -a vertically-swinging member Acomprising aiframe pivotaily connected to'v the cross-bar of the main frame anda net carried by the frame, one or more coiled springs arranged on and connected'at one end .to the cross-barof the main frame and connected' at their-oppositefends'- tothe verti- `cally swinging member, and means onl the dashboard for retaining the vertically.-
swinging rnemberin its raised position. f
lin-testimony whereof I have hereunto set' my handin presence oi two 'subscribing vint.
