"onrrnn sra rns PATENT orrron ELBERT O. HASKINS, OF RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO ABENDROTH BROS, OF PORT CHESTER, NEW YORK, A CORPORA- TION OF NEW YORK.
SMOKE-HOOD.
Patented July 10, 1906.
iiu ilinitiri filed August 21,1905. Serial No. 275,058.
To all w/wm it may concern;
Be it known that I, ELBERT O. HAsKINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rutherford, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jerse have invented an Imnace construction and without any reference to the location of the entranceopen1ng of the chimney, and the latter is usually placed with reference to the height of a ceiling, so as not to be too near the same, and without any reference to the boiler or furnace to be employed and the smoke pipe of which is to be connected to the chimney. Consequently it is common and also necessary to employ one or more bends in the smoke-pipe, whichinterfere with the draft; and the object of my invention is to provide a structure by the use of which the bend of a smoke-pipe is reduced to a minimum.
In the device of my invention I provide the smoke-hood with a revoluble member through which the smoke and other products of com bustion pass on the wal'. from the fixed discharge pipe or pipes secured to the boiler or furnace to the smoke-pipe extending to the chimney. This revoluble member has an adjustable relation with said fixed discharge pipe or pipes, so that it may be moved to position to receive the smoke-pipe when the same is arranged to occupy as nearly a straight line as possible to the chimney and at the desired inclination to insure the draft.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional plan through aportion of a member of a boiler or furnace with the revoluble member of the smoke-hood also in a horizontal position or straight-line relation with the other parts; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section and partial elevation through the revoluble member, showing the revoluble member turned up into a vertical relation.
0. represents a section of a steam or hotwater boiler or furnace with passage-ways a from one surface or side for the smoke and products of combustion. This boiler or furnace may be of any desired construction, and the location of the discharge passageways for the smoke and products of combustion is immaterial, as the parts essentially entering into the device of my invention may be of any desired proportion or arrangements to suit the particular furnace in hand, said proportions or relations, forming no essential part of my invention.
As shown in Fig. 1, b and 0 represent fixed discharge-pipes from the passage-ways a, formed as quarter-bends toward one another and securedin any desired manner, such as by the bolts shown, to the section of the boiler or furnace. (1 represents the revoluble member, having a main tubular part with flaring ends (1, which receive the free ends of the fixed discharge-pipes b c. This revoluble member is somewhat of the form of a letter T, having an offset circular collar (1 centrally placed to receive the smoke-pipe e.
Bythe construction shown it will be apparent that the tubular member (Z at its flaring ends d surrounds the circular ends of the discharge-pipes b c and is therefore free to turn thereon either down into an inclined position, into a horizontal position, or upward into an inclined or vertical position. Therefore this revoluble member has an adjustable relation with the fixed discharge pipe or pipes, so that it may be moved to position to receive the smoke-pipe when the same is arranged as may be desired with reference to the hole in the chimney, it being always preferable to give the said smoke-pipe a slight inclination upward toward the hole in the chimney, so as to insure a draft, and if there is any bend as between said smoke-pipe and the collar of the revoluble member receiving the same that bend should be and by virtue of the revoluble member can be made as slight as possible.
I have shown and prefer to form the revo luble member with parallel ribs f, centrally placed around within the revoluble member to receive a septum f in the groove between said ribs, said septum extending from the inner surface of the revoluble member toward the oilset collar dflreceiving the smoke-pipe e with the object of making independent the line of draft from the compartments or passage-ways for smoke and products of combustion of the boiler or furnace, so that the draft may not be through one at the expense of the other, but causing both to draw substantially equal and without interference. As illustrated, this septum is slightly narrower than the full diameter of the opening of the collar (P, so that the same may be passed through the opening to its seat in the groove between the ribs, Where it may fit tight to produce suflicient friction to hold it in place or may be securely positioned in any desired manner.
I have shown and prefer to employ in the annular opening between the free ends of the discharge-pipes b c and the inner surfaces of the flaring ends (Z a cement filling g, placed therein after the revoluble member cl has been positioned and the smoke-pipe connected thereto. This filling forms a seal to prevent the escape into the adjoining atmos- Ehere of any of the smoke or products'ofcomustlon, compelling the same to pass entirely to the chimney.
I have shown and prefer to employ screws 2 or equivalent means for fixing the relation of the revoluble member to the fixed discharge-pipes b c after the same has been determined, and which screws are tightened to place at the same time that the smoke-pipe to the chimney is fastened to the revoluble member and previous to the insertion of the cement filling g.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination with the section of a boiler or a furnace having a passage-way opening therefrom, of a fixed discharge-pipe in the form of a quarter-bend connected with and secured to said section at such passageway, a revoluble member of tubular form having a flaring end to receive the free circu lar end of the discharge-pipe, and adapted to be turned thereon, maintaining its axis in the same vertical plane, said revoluble member also having an offset collar to receive the smoke-p pe.
2. The comb nation with the section of a boiler or furnace having two passage-ways opening therefrom on the same side, of fixed discharge-pipes connected with and secured to said section at such passage-ways in the form of quarter-bends extending toward one another, a revoluble member of tubular form having flaring ends to receive the free circular ends of the said discharge-pipes, and adapted to be turned thereon, said revoluble member also having an offset collar to receive the smoke-pipe.
8. The combination with the section of a boiler or furnace having two passage-Ways opening therefrom on the same side, of fixed discharge-pipes connected with and secured to said section at such passage-ways in the form of quarter-bends extending toward one another, a revoluble member of tubular form having flaring ends to receive the free circular ends of said discharge-pipes and adapted to be turned thereon, said revoluble member also having an offset collar to receive the smoke-pipe, and a septum located within said revoluble member for controlling the draft through the passage-ways of the nace, and means for fixing the relation of the revoluble member to the fixed dischargepipes and for closing thespace between the same.
5. The combination with the section of a boiler or furnace having two passage-ways opening therefrom on the sameside, of fixed discharge-pipes connected .withand secured to said section at suchpassage-ways in the form of quarter-bends extending toward one another, a revoluble member of tubular form having flaring ends to receive the free circular ends of said discharge-pipes and adapted to be turned thereon, said revoluble member also having an offset collar to receive the smoke-pipe, and parallel ribs formed on the inner surface of the said revoluble member and placed centrally thereof, and a septum received in the groove between the parallel ribs for controlling the draft from the passage-ways of the boiler or furnace.
6. The combination with the section of a boiler or furnace having two passage-ways opening therefrom on the same side, of fixed discharge-pipes connected with and secured to said section at such passage-ways in the form of quarter-bends extending toward one another, a revoluble member of tubular form having flaring ends to receive the free circular ends of said discharge-pipes and adapted to be turned thereon, said revoluble member also having an offset collar to receive the smoke-pipe, parallel ribs formed on the inner surface of the said revoluble member and placed centrally thereof, a septum received in the groove between the parallel ribs for controlling the draft from the passage-ways of the boiler or furnace, and means for fixing the relation of the revoluble member to the fixed discharge-pipes and for closing the space between the same.
Signed by me this 15th day of August, 1905.
ELBERT O. HASKINS.
