PHILLIP WEIDNER, OF SAILOR SPRINGS, ILLINOIS.
VEHICLE-TOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 10, 1906.
Application filed August 9,1905. Serial No. 273,391.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PHILLIP VVEIDNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sailor Springs, in the county of Clay and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Tops and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to the jointed tops of buggies and other similar vehicles; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the framework of a vehicle-top constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
. A is a vehicle-seat or other similar sup port.
B represents the bows of the top, the lower ends of which are provided with a pivotal connection I), by means of which they are connected with the front end portion of the seat or support.
The bows are of any approved construction, and three or more of them may be used.
D represents bands of flexible material secured to the top portions of the bows and to the back of the seat for the purpose of supporting the flexible material which forms the cover and curtains of the top and which is not shown in the drawings, same being of any approved make.
In order to support the top in its raised position, two pairs of rods E and F are provided, and these rods have their adjacelrlit T e outer end portions of the said rods are curved or inclined downwardly and are pivoted to the front and rear bows by pins f and f respectively. The adjacent end portions of the rods are provided with stops g, which hold the rods in their extended positions in alinement with each other and with the pins (3 a the bars F. When thus constructed and arranged, the rods hold the bows extended until the rods are folded by bending them forcibly downward at their joints.
H and I are pairs of rods which have their adjacent end portions pivotally connected by pins h. The upper end portions ofthe rods H are bent or inclined rearwardly and are pivoted to the upper part of the rear bow by pins 7:. The lower end portions of the rods I are pivoted to brackets is, which project from the rear part of the seat or support A by pins 'i. The adjacent end portions of the rods I are provided with stops j, which hold the said rods in alinement and prevent them from folding forwardly at their joints, but which permit them to be folded rear- Wardly when sufficient force is used.
When all the pairs of rods are folded at their joints, the vehicle-top is tilted over backward and the rear bow rests on the brackets 71., to which the rods I are pivoted. The flexible bands D hold the intermediate bow or bows at the desired distances from the front and rear bows when the vehicle-top is raised.
What I claim is The combination, with a vehicle-seat, and bows pivotally connected thereto; of pairs of rods E F pivoted together and having their outer end portions inclined downwardly and pivoted to the front and rear bows, said rods being foldable downwardly in vertical planes and the rods E having prolongations E provided at their lower edges with stops g which project laterally under the middle portions of the rods F.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
PHILLIP WEIDNER.
