Bridgeporhfin the countyof Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tire-Plugs, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionrelates to new and useful improvements in pneumatic-tire plugs, such as are employed for closing punctures and the like, and is adapted to be made from metal with a suitable protective covering of soft air-proof material.
It is the object of my inventionto produce a metal plug forclosingholes in pneumatic tireswhich shall'be exceptionall simple and inexpensiveto manufacture an which may be accordingly sold and used as cheaply as other forms of lugs now upon the market, to provide a p ug which will not injure or wear the tire and which shall be especially adapted to conform to the shape of a tire when applied.-
' 'With the above objects in view my invention resides and consists in the novel con- 'struction and combination of parts shown upon theaccompanying sheet of drawings,

As previously stated, it is the prime object .of my present invention to produce a plug which can be manufactured and sold at a verylow price, and with that in view I have devised m present plug, which is formed substantia y of three parts of metal and a rubberfcovering for the head and nut. Referringm detail to the characters of reference marked 'upon the drawings, A indi-' cates the head of the plug as a whole, to whichis swivelly connected a screw-threaded shank B, adapted to receive a rubber nut C. The head, generally speaking, is of an oval shape, having pointed ends cl d, adapted for insertion into a puncture of a tire after the style of plugs of this character. After the plug is inserted the head is adjusted agalnst the inside of the tire and the nut upon the shank is set up against the face of the tread, after which the threaded shankis cut off close to the face of the nut.
The head of my present lug is formed of a single piece of sheet meta in a verysiniple manner. 7 It is first blanked outflat, as shown in Fig. 5, which shows a blank of a general oval outline having ears (2 c on either side of its middle portion. The central part of the blank is cupped up to form a pocket f for the head 7c of the shank, while the ears before mentioned are deflected in and down to cover the sides pf the enlargement 01' shank and to hold the same in the pocket in a way to allow the said shank to be either rotated or swung forward or backward to either position indicated in dotted lines of Fig. 2, which position is that which said shank would assume when being shoved 'into a tire.
-The outer edges of the head may be left plain, as indicated in Figs. 1, 2, and 7, or they maybe turned in slightly to form a reinforced edge g, as shown in the modified construction, Fig. 6. v The central part of the head may be also provided with a stamped ribh, as shown in Fig. 7, leading into the pocket f from each side to better permit the shank to be swung in two directions and to stren' then the head, if desired. A suitable fiexib e covering '2', ma be used to cover the head and can be applled by molding around the head, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, to pro tect the tire from the edges of the head, or the said parts may be covered by a dipping proc' ess or otherwise.
