sult is two-tenths of a revolution of each units-wheel geared, and the resulting numbering is 1, 3,' 5, 7, &c., on alternate -numberwheels and 2, 4,- 6, 8, 85o., on the others. If either E3, E5, or E7 were fixed andthe starwheel E0 made to contact once at each revolution of D with said pin U, other numbering combinations would be edected, as E3 gives a three-tenth, E5 a four-tenth, and E7 a fivetenth movement to the units-wheels, respectively, under the above conditions. With one, two, three, four, or five pins inserted in holes on the face of said disk T. and the starwheel Eo made to contact with a pin after each impression of numbers all thebeforementioned styles of numbering can be donenamely, the consecutive, duplicate, triplicate, quadruplicate, 4and quintuple; but the duplication or triplication of sheets cannot thus be effected. For this purpose only one pin U is used in disk T, and it ismade to recede at intervals by means shown and to be described.
VFor convenience the several groups of wheels and numbering sets are usually placed on sleeves, as indicated inl the drawings, merely to retain said groups together conveniently. v
The shaft F is extended through all reelframes on the shaft C. Two of these reelframes are shown without gear in them in Fig. 1. In these frames (see Figs. 6, 7, and l2) the spur-wheel F"is secured to shaft F. F has twenty-five teeth and gears to a loose wheel G of thirty teeth on shaft C, to which shaft all reel-frames D D D are secured, Secured to this thirty-teeth wheel G so loose on shaft C is a thirty-six-teeth wheel G, which gears to a thirty-teeth wheel H, which is secured to the first or units'wheel of the numbering set. Said wheel F is also secured to a onetooth Geneva wheel I, which gears to a twelvenotched and concaved Geneva wheel J, which is secured to the adjacent thin thirty-sixteeth wheel G2, which gears to a thin thirtyteeth wheel H3, which is fixed to the tens number-wheel H. It will be seen lthat the tens-wheel is correctly moved, as thirty-six teeth is to thirty teeth so is the twelvenotched Geneva wheel to the ten figures on the number-wheels. It is obvious' that in specifying the numbers of teeth other numbers in same proportions in any gear could be used. Attached to the said twelve-notched Geneva wheel J and the said adjacent thirtysix-teeth wheel G is a thirty-teeth wheel G. These three are all secured together, the
thirty-teeth wheel G gearing to a twentyfive-teeth wheel F on shaft F, which in turn is secured to the second one-tooth wheel (Geneva) I and a washer of the thickness to clear the next thirty-six-teeth wheel G. This second one-tooth Geneva wheel I gears to another twelve-notched Geneva wheel J,
which is a part of the next set comprising l itself, a thirty-six-teeth wheel G and a thirtyteeth wheel G operating the of the numbering set and also working back hundreds-wheel in similar manner to work the thousandswheel, and so on to the actual number offigure -wheels comprising a full set. This Geneva gear prevents any movement other than that imparted by the star-wh eel till any set is ungeared, when all number-wheels are loose. Other sets can be placed round the wheels on shaft C,as seen in dotted lines in Fig. 7 by H2 H.
The machine as shown and described (omitting Figs. 8 and 9) is adapted for a general jobbing numbering-machine complete; but the shaft C alone, with its reels and gear, may be geared to the printing-cylinder-of any reciprocating printing-machine and be supplied with ink from the ink-rollers of said machine, so that numbering can be worked in conjunction with printing. The modification shown in Figs. 8 and 9 is an arrangey ment of sets of numbering-wheels placed close together or at regular intervals to permit of l numbering a continuous strip either separately or in' conjunction with rotary printing-machine. In this arrangement all outer sets are numbering sets. F is moved out to the center of the dovetailed groove, round which the other numbering sets are adjusted and fixed. (See Fig. 8.) working the machine the paper. is placed on 1 the table A to 'the usual adjustable gage and if in sheets sheet by sheet is fed in the usual manner adopted by paper-rollers to thestops K. As the machine revolves the Y cam K3 at the gap allows the roller K to drop on the sheet, and the stop K rising the sheet is delivered between the rollers B and numbering-wheels The cam K3 is moving by the wheel C to another position on its shaft C by a set-screw to permit IIC in D D for printing numbers. Y adjustable as to its time of j sheets to be fed variously to the machine two or more times, if the numbers require to be closer than is permitted by the free working of the numbering-wheels in one operation. The sheets then pass between B and B5 and between B and B,these small rollers B5 and i B7 having cords to guide the sheets round B, and so to a delivery-box placed below B, but not shown.

Q', loose on the shaft C, has a cam Q5 attached to it, working the pin U when said pin is to be moved in and out of gear, so that when pin U projects sufliciently through the fixed disk T the star-wheel E0 contacts with it, and so operates the number-wheels in tenths or multiples of tenths, according to which set of change-wheels is operating the shaft F. This pin U is sometimes made to recede for a period sufficient to allow the disk D to make one or two revolutions without the starwheel E contacting with it, thus allowing two or three sheets to be numbered alike by using the said sixteen-teeth wheel Q or the twenty-four-teeth wheel, (not shown,) respectively, for driving the said cam Q5. The fixed disk T, the center of which is coincident with the center of shaft C, has a number of tapped holes near its outer edge arranged in a circle for fitting in any pins for working the star-Wheel E, as explained, when the same is wanted to move more or less early to change the numbers at different points of the revolution, particularly for changing triplicate when using three numbering sets in a reel-frame. The change-gear E3, giving the three-teeth movement mentioned, would not number correctly when using three sets in a reel-frame for triplicate work, as the sixth contact of the star-wheel E on the pin U would show or print numbers 19, 10, 11 instead of 19, 20, 2l. The insertion of three pins in the disk T for moving the shaftwheel E0 after each impression obviates this error.
Sinking ciphers of usual construction are used to obviate printing ciphers before figures and letters or signatures may be laced before the figures, such as, A380/, c.
To take any numbering set out of gear for altering readings or to lay aside, the nicked nuts R, one at each spindle end of most numbering sets, are turned about a half-turn, so that the long slot in the head of each faces outward away from the gear to which the set is geared on shaft C, and said set can be lifted out through said slots. To re lace, the set is drop ed with its spindle en s one in each slot ofP R and 'when in gear the heads R are turned about a half-turn, which not only will tighten them, but prevent them coming out of gear. There is only one pin U that is needed to be withdrawn, as shown, by a spring and pushed forward by a cam, as shown, of well-known construction. The disk T is a fixture bolted to the frame A. The gearing composed of two teeth and a gap bridging the engraved figures in the numbering-Wheels and marked G3 serve a similar plurpose to the wheels on shaft C in other gures, all but the units one being attached to a twelve-notched Geneva Wheel J and this geared to a one-tooth wheel I in each case, said wheels I being secured to adjacent numbering-wheels on shaft F, and on all other sets the numbering-wheels are idle, with merely bosses or washers between. It will be seen that there are no springs, pawls, ratchets, or
the like between the star-wheel E0 and any of the number-wheels, so that each numberwheel is always in gear with the said E", and so no number-wheel can be purposely or inadvertently altered, as is usually the case. I have previously used spur-wheels attached to the units and tens number-wheels on the outer sides of same, but such limit of numbering is two figures. I have never heard of spur-Wheels being placed between the numbering-wheels for indefinite numbering, thus placinlall number-wheels in gear.
In t -s invention any suitable sizes or materials may be adopted.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire a patent of the United States of America, is-
1. In a numbering-machine, in combination, a shaft carrying a series of single-tooth Geneva wheels with `spur-wheels attached thereto, these operating on a series of Geneva twelve-notched and concaved wheels attached to which are spur-wheels, this series operating on a series of spur-wheels, to each o which is attached a numbering-Wheel with ten figures engraved thereon each, the whole substantially as described and shown and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a numbering-machine, in combination, single-tooth Geneva wheels attached to spur-wheels with twelve notched and concaved Geneva wheels attached to spurwheels, these eared to spur-wheels that are attached to t e number-wheels, the Whole IOO being mounted in a reel-frame for o}g)erating substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
-3. In a numbering machine, Wheels, spur-Wheels, engraved number-Wheel mounted in a reel-frame in combination with a series of spurchange-Wheels, said gearing mounted in a reel-frame and Worked by a star-Wheel al1 substantially as set forth. A
