UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. BRAZNELL, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
DEVICE FOR CLEANING AND REFILLING DlPPlNG-TANKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
, Patented July 3, 1906.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. BRAzNELL,a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Device for Cleaning and Refilling Dipping-Tanks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device for cleansing enamels, paints, and other liquids used upon metal bedsteads, furniture, &c. The tank in which the liquid is kept becomes filled with dirt and sediment of various kinds, and it is necessary to em ty and clean out the dipping-tank and also filter the liquids and then return them to the tank. The ordinary manner of doing thisthat is, by dipping or pouring out theli uid, cleaning the tanks out, passing the liqui through a strainer, and then pouring it back into the tanks-consumes considerable time and labor, especially in a large factory.
The object of this invention is to save time and labor by drawing the liquid from the dipping tank by means of a suction pum and passing it back to the tank through a fil ter, thus straining the liquid, keeping it agitated, and also not exposing it unnecessarily to the action of the air, which is injurious to the enamel.
The invention consists in the novel fea tures of construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claim, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which I have shown, partly in side elevation and partly in section, the simplest form of my invention.
In the drawings, A represents a suitable table or platform having an opening through which the body portion of a tank B can be passed, and upon the platform A is found a suitable suction-pum which I have shown as belonging to the hand-operated type. Suitable pipes D and E connect the pump and the lower portion of the tankB, the pipesE and D being connected by a four-way cou ling provided with screw-plugs F. A tank is located at any desired point above the level or top of the tank B and is supported in any desired manner.
A pipe E leads from the suctionump C and is connected by a four-way coup ing to a pipe H, which extends horizontally to a point above the tank G, and a depending pipe H is also connected by a four-way coupling to the and H and discharged into the bag K;
pipe H. The pipe H opens downwardly into the tank G. From the bottom of the tank G depends the pipe J, also connected by a fourway coupling to the pipe J, which discharges into the upper portion of the tank B. All of the four-way couplings mentioned are provided with screw-plugs F and by removing these plugs all of the pipes may be cleaned.
In the tank G is hung a bag or sack K in alinement with the pipe H, and this bag is supported within the tank G by suitable hooks K, a space being left between the sides of the bag and the sides of the tankG and the top of the bag and below the level of the top of the tank G.
The operation of the device is as follows: The dipping-tank to be cleaned having first been placed in position and connected to the pipe D, the pump 0 is started, and the liquid will be passed through the pipes D, E, E, hI-JI, T 's bag may be a close-woven sack, if the liquid is thin, or a loosely-woven one for liquids of a heavy body. The filtered liquid passes through the pipes J and J and is discharged back into its proper tank B. Should the sack or bag K become clogged, the liquid will not run over upon the floor, as the top of the sack is below the top of the tank G and is spaced from the sides of it, so that the li uid is free to pass around the sides of the tan G to the pipe J when the sack overflows. By means of this construction damage to the floor and loss of liquid is prevented should the attendant neglect to change the sacks when one has been clogged with dirt and foreign substances.
This device not only cleanses and filters the liquid and removes the dirt and sediment from the dipping-tank, but also agitates and keeps the liquid well mixed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device comprising a dipping-tank, a filter-tank arranged in a higher level than the dipping-tank, pipes leading from the bottom of the dip ing-tank to a point above the filtering-tan and discharging therein, and a filter placed in the filtering-tank, and spaced from the sides of the said tank.
