To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. LUCAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at N ewark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molds; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in molds for making cisterns, catch-basins and the like of concrete or other plastic material.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, strong, and durable device of this character in which the sections may be quickly and easily connected and disconnect ed to set up or knock down the mold and also adjusted upon each other to vary the size or diameter of the molded structure.
WVith the above and other objects in view my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through my improved cistern-mold. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view through a half of the same, the plane of the section being indicated by the line 2 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an inner side elevation, on an enlarged scale, of the adjustable connection between the overlapping side edges of two of the mold sections or staves. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail vertical section taken on the plane indicated by the line 5 5 in Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the pivoted latch or hook for adjustably connecting the mold-sections, and Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view through the bottom edge of one of the moldsections.
My improved mold 1 for use in erecting cisterns, catch-basins, or the like of concrete or other plastic material consists of a plurality of vertically-disposed side sections or staves 2, which have their side edges overlapping, as shown at 3, and which are preferably so arranged that they form a cylindrical mold. These mold-sections 2 are preferably constructed of steel or other sheet metal, and they are braced by longitudinally-curved transversely-extending angle-metal braces or reinforcing-ribs 4, arranged at suitable points upon the inner faces of the mold sections or staves 2, as shown. Any number of the angle-braces 4 may be provided on each moldsection, and one is preferably provided adj acent to the bottom of each of said sections, so that its horizontally-extending flange 5 engages the ground or foundation upon which the cistern or other structure is to be molded and prevents said section from sinking into the same. The length of the braces or ribs 4 is less than that of the width of the mold-sections 2, so that the ends of the braces terminate some distance from the side edges of said sections and permit of the overlapping or telescopic connection 3 between the sections. At each of the ends of the angle-metal braces 4 except those at the bottoms of the moldsections the horizontally-projecting flange is notched or cut, as shown at 6, and a portion is bent upwardly to form a lip or tongue 7, which serves as a guide for a swinging latch or hook 8, which adjustably connects the adjacent mold-sections. The latches or hooks 8 are provided between the adjacent ends of the angle-metal braces 4 of each adjacent or adjoining mold-section, the latches or hooks being pivoted upon the braces of one section and adapted to engage keepers upon the opposing braces of the adjoining sections. As shown, the latches or hooks 8 are formed of metal plates having a slight longitudinal curvature to correspond with that of the curvature of the mold-sections and braces and having one of their ends pivoted by a rivet or the like 9 upon the vertical flange of one of the angle-braces 4, which flange is riveted or otherwise secured to the inner face of the mold-section which it reinforces. The latches or hooks are adapted to swing from the pivots 9 into and out of the spaces between the guide-tongues or projections 7, and said vertical flanges of the braces and at their free ends are formed hooks or jaws 10, which are adapted to engage openings or slots 11 in the horizontal flanges of the braces 4 on the adjacent or adjoining mold-sections. The hooks 10 have stepped or notched lower and inner faces 12 to permit the latch to adjustably engage the slot 11, and thus permit of the adjustment of the mold-sections 2 toward and from each other for the purpose of varying the size or diameter of the mold, and hence the structure molded thereby. It will be seen that any one of the notches in the face 12 of the jaw or hook 10 may be dropped into the slot or opening 11 for the purpose mentioned, the overlapping or telescopic engagement 3 of the side edges of the mold-sections ICC IIO
permitting the latter to be adjusted upon each other to vary the diameter of the mold as desired.
The mold-top 13, which is conventionally illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, may be of any desired form and construction to produce a neck or mouth on the cistern of any shape or form.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined by the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described rnold having the sep arable overlapping side sections, provided on one side with transversely-disposed anglemetal braces, each having a vertical web and a horizontal, laterally-extending web, said horizontal webs having longitudinal slits in their opposing ends and the corner portions partly separated by said slits, upturned to form vertical guides, and each of said horizontal webs being also provided with a vertical opening near one end, and latches detachably connecting said braces, and hence said side sections, each of said latches lying between the guides and vertical flanges, pivoted at one end to the vertical flange of one of the braces and having its other end provided with a depending, stepped, hook portion to engage the vertical opening in the horizontal flange of the next adjacent brace.
