Letters Patent No. 82,430, dated September 2:2, 1868.
IMPRDVBMENT IN GARVING-MAGHINES.
To ALL wHoM 1T MAY CONCERN:
Bc it known thot I, GEORGE MERRILL, of Newburyport, in the county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carving and Cutting Type from Patterns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters ofreference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts'wherever they occur.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
My invention relates to i'mprovcuiontsin machines for cutting wooden type; and consi-sts in a novel arrangement ol the cutting-tool and guide, and in a. peculiar arrangement of sliding tables and levers, by vhieh the size of the letter being eut can be made greater or less than the pattern, to any degree desired The drawing represents my machine in perspective, regdy for'use,
In constructing my improved machine, I provide a suitable bed or frame, A, having an uprlgnt or standard, B, atits rear end. A sliding bed or table, D, is mounted on this frame A, and arranged to slide to and fro with accuracy thereon. This bed D has side-pieces, I-Lprojeeting vertically, -with horizontal arms, l, projecting to a distance equal to the length ofthe bed, or more, as represented in the drawing.
Upon these arms l is mounted another h'ed or table, P, which has a vertically-projecting arm, t, on one side, as shown; this upper bed thus resting and sliding' on the lower one, orra.ther, on the frame attached to the lower one.
A horizontal' aru`1,'C, projects from the top of the upright, B, in a diagonal position, so as to bring its outer end even with the side oi' the tables P and I), the arm C being secured rigidly in position, and having pivoted to its end a verticallever, h, which is connected to the upper table by a rod, n, and to the lower table bye rod, m, these ro'ds v1i and m being p'ivoted at each end, so as to permitthe parts to move freely.
'In front of the upright, B, ig. mounted avertical v,rod or shaft, I, loosely, so 'that it can turn horizontally, and-also move vertically, it resting on a spring, f, which allows it to be pressed down when desired. To this 4shaft I are attached rigidly two horizontal arms, a. u nd 6 the former projecting outover the table D, and the latter over-thc other table I. v
In the outer end ot' the crm a is mounted a spindlcghavingspulley, u, on-it, into which spindle the cuttingtool d is inserted; this pulley u being driven by a belt, v, passing around a drum or pulley, E, placed vertically behind the upright, B.
Upon the upp'er arm, la, is secured asliding clamp, having the guide or pointerc attached, this clamp being arranged to slide' to and fro on the uro; b, and having o thumb-nut to secure it in place, its shown.
In operation, tho pattern is placed on the table P, and theblock to be cut is placed on the table D. The' arm b is t-hen brought down, so'as to press the Aguide gr pointer c upon thepattern, which .movement presses the cutter d down upon tho block on the table below, and as the arm 6 is moved laterally, to follow the form of the pattern, it oausesthe tool d to make the same or corresponding movements on the block below.
By changing the points at which the connecting-rods n and m are attached to the lever i and the tables, the ratio ol' movement between the tables may be varied at will. b
When attached as represented in the drawing, the lower rod, m, is twice as'far' from the fixed point o as the rod n is, and, consequently, when the lower end of the lever h is moved to or fro, the lower table, D, will be moved twice the distance that the other table will be, thus making the letter cut of double thc size of the pattern. In order to produce a corresponding variation in the, size laterally, the pointer should be adjusted on the arm b :it a rclatively-cmrespunding distance from the shaft I.
Ii' it be desired to reverse the operation, nnd'cnt a letter or ligure smaller than the pattern, the shaft I con be turned upside down, thusV bringing the guide-armb over the lo'iver table, and the too'harln a over the upper table, the guide-point c and the tool tl being also reversed or turned upside down, to bring them into proper position for operation. In such case, of course, the belt will necessarily be moved with-arm a, and bo above the upper table, the pulley or drum E being made long enough to permit the belt to be slipped up to that position.
It is obvious that, by altering or adjusting the relative position of the cutter and the guide, and also the points of connection between the lever L and the tables, a great variety oi' changes may be made between the size et' the letter cut and the pattern.
lt is also obvious that the upper table may be made to rest on a rigid frame, attached to the main frame, A, instead of being attached to the lower table, and the result stili be the same.
In case it be lesircfltu cut the ligure of the same size as the pattern, one ot' the rods n or m wiil be detached, and the tno tables secured to each other, so as to move together. I
The table may be move-l by rack and pinion, or any other suitable means, the object et' the lever if. and rods n and m being simply to regulate their movements relatively to cach other.
It is obvious that instead of arranging the tables one above the other, they may be arranged side by side,
in which case, the lever h and the connecting-rods would be placed horizontally instead of vertically, as would also the arms a and of the shaft I, the operation and resLult being precisely the same, as already described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, is-
1. The combination ol' the tables D and P, connected by'links or rods n m to the lever z, substantially as described.
2. The shaft I, mounted in the main frame, and provtledvwitli the rigid arms a and b, carrying the adjustable guide aand the cutter d, and arranged, in relation to the tables D and P, substantially as described.
3. The table l), provided with the side-pieces or frame Il. l for supportingY the'upper table P, and permitting the latter to be moved thereon. as herein described.
