To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN KNEFF MEANs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blairsville, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Lock-Setting Implement, of
- accurately mounting door locks and latches the cases of which are cylindrical in form.
A further object of my invention is to provide an implement for accurately determining the position and direction of the bore produced in a door for setting locks and latches.
With these and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speclfication, and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of embodiment of the inventlon capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the invention 1 is not necessarily limited thereto, as various changes in the form, proportions, and general assemblage of the parts may be resorted to without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advanta es.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved lock-setting implement. Fig. 2 is a view in edge elevation of my improved lock-setting implement. Fig.
- 3 is a view of my improved lock-setting improvided with a straight flange 2, preferably arranged at right angles to the longitudinal frame. Rigidly secured to the frame are two cylindrical lugs 4 and 5, with their axes perpendicular to the plane of the frame and arranged on a line parallel with the flange 2.
Upon the side of the frame 1 opposite the lugs 4 and 5 are bore-marking teeth or spurs 6 and 7, Fig. 4, the latter being disposed upon lines respectively coincident with the axis of the lugs 4 and 5.
Secured to and mounted for transverse movement on the flange 2 is the vertical flange 8 of an auxiliary frame 14, said flange being provided with a laterally-projecting lip 8, adapted to engage the edge of a door 9, as shown. The lip 8 and flange 8 are formed with transverse s ots 10, Fig. 2, adapted to receive bolts 11, which pass through the flange 2 and are provided with Washers 12 and nuts 13, adapted to bear upon the lip 8 for securing the latter in adjusted position. The flange 8 forms part of the frame 14, and secured to the free end of the latter is a vertically-disposed block 15, provided with spaced lateral extensions forming ways 16, each way being formed with a longitudinal guidingtongue, as shown. V
The block 15 is provided with spaced recesses or saddles 16, in which are seated tubular auger-guides 17, provided with longitudinal grooves 18, adapted to secure the guiding-tongues on the ways 16, the tubular guides 17 belng retained in position by means of clips 19, fastened in any suitable manner to the block 15, as by screws 20.
Extending laterally from the central portion of the flange 8, and preferably arranged at right angles to the longitudinal plane of the frame 14, is an arm 21, in the free end of which is pivoted, as indicated at 23, a clamping-lever 22, having a cam-face 24 adapted to bear against the edge of the door 9, as will be more fully explained hereinafter.
The improved lock-setting implement is designed for use in setting that class of door locks and latches in which each locking member is inclosed in a separate casing or housing and set into an opening bored or otherwise formed in the edge of the door, smaller openings bein bored transversely through the door for t e reception of the key and knob shaft.
In operation the implement is placed upon a door, as shown in Fig. 1, with the lip 8 engaging the edge thereof and the spurs 6 and 7 bearing upon one side of the door, and in which position a blow with a hammer or other tool upon the lugs 4 and 5 will cause the spurs to enter the side of the door, and thus indicate the center of the bores required for the key and knob-shaft. The implement is then removed and the openings bored transversely of the door, using the indentations or marks made by the spurs to center the auger or other tool employed in making the openings. The implement is then placed on the opposite side of the door, with the lugs 4 and 5 seated in the transverse opening of the latter and with the flange 8 and arm 21 engaging the edge of the door, as best shown in Fig. 3, the implement being secured in po sition by moving the clamping-lever to operative engagement with the adjacent edge of the door. An auger may then be inserted in the guide-tubes 17 so as to bear against the edge of the door, and in which position the openings formed by the auger will intersect the transverse openings, this being due to the fact that the lugs 4 and 5 are disposed in alinement with the longitudinal. axis of the guide-tubes, the lugs being partially withdrawn from the openings in the side of the door by adjusting the frame 1 laterally to permit the free passage of the auger. By having the frames 1 and 14 secured together in the manner described one frame may be adjusted transversely of the other to adapt the device to doors of any thickness, while by having the guide-tubes detachably secured to the frame and adjustable longitudinally of the latter said tubes may be readily detached and replaced by larger or smaller tubes when it is desired to set locks of different diameters.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A device of the class described comprising a main frame provided with bore-centering spurs adapted to engage one side of the work, an auxiliary frame slidably mounted on the main frame for engagement with the adjacent edge of the work, a tool-receiving guide carried by the auxiliary frame, and means for securing said auxiliary frame in adjusted position.
2. A device of the class described comprising a main frame adapted to engage one side of the work, an auxiliary frame adjustable laterally on the main frame and provided with a lug for engagement with the adjacent edge of the work, a tool-receiving guide secured to the auxiliary frame, and a clamping member carried by the lug.
3. A device of the class described comprising a main frame provided with bore-centering spurs adapted to engage one side of the work, lugs extending laterally from the frame on the opposite side thereof and disposed in alinement with said lugs, an auxiliary frame slidably mounted on the main frame for engagement with the adjacent edge of the work, tool-receiving guides carried by the auxiliary frame, and means for securing the auxiliary frame in adjusted position.
4. A device of the class described comprising amain frame adapted to engage one side of the work and provided with spaced laterallyextending lugs, an auxiliary frame slidably mounted on the main frame for engagement with the adjacent edge of the work, tool-receiving guides carried by the auxiliary frame and disposed in horizontal alinement with the laterally-extending lugs, and means for securing the auxiliary frame in adjusted position.
5. A device of the class described comprising a main frame provided with bore-centering spurs adapted to engage one side of the work, an auxiliary frame mounted for sliding movement on the main frame and provided with a laterally-extending lip for engagement with the adjacent edge of the work, tool-receiving guides carried by the auxiliary frame, and means for securing the auxiliary frame in adjusted position.
6. A device of the class described comprising a mam frame adapted to engage one side of the work, and provided at one end thereof with a laterally-extending flange, an auxiliary frame slidably mounted on the flange for engagement with the adjacent edge of the work and having transverse slots formed therein, tool-receiving guides carried by the auxiliary frame, and bolts passing'through the slots in the auxiliary frame and engaging the flange on the main frame for securing the auxiliary frame in adjusted position.
7. A device of the class described comprismg a main frame adapted to engage one side of the work, an auxiliary frame slidably mounted on the main frame and provided with a laterally-extending lug, a tool-receiving guide carried by the auxiliary frame, and a lever pivotally supported on the lug and provided with a cam-face for engagement with the adjacent edge of the work.
8. A device of the class described comprising a main frame adapted to engage one side of the work, an auxiliary frame slidably mounted on the main frame for engagement with the adjacent edge of the Work, longitudinally adjustable tool receiving guides carried by the auxiliary frame, and means for securing the auxiliary frame in adjusted position.
9. A device of the class described comprising a main frame adapted to engage one side of the work, an auxiliary frame mounted for lateral movement on the main frame and adapted to engage the adjacent edge of the work, guides carried by the auxiliary frame, and tool-receiving tubes slidably mounted on the guides.
10. A device of the class described comprising a main frame adapted to engage one side of the work, an auxiliary frame mounted for lateral movement on the main frame and adapted to engage the adjacent edge of the work, a bar secured to the auxiliary frame and provided with seating recesses, guides carried by said auxiliary frame, and tool-receiving tubes seated in said recesses and slidably mounted on the guides.
11. A device of the class described, comprising a substantially plane frame, a straight Work-engaging lip carried by the frame intermediate the sides, a plurality of cylindrical bore-engaging lugs outstanding from the frame and on a line parallel with the lip, a plurality of bore-centering spurs, disposed axially to the lugs, a plurality of augerguides mounted upon the frame and adjustable longitudinally, clips for securing the ides at a desired adjustment and a latch disposed to clamp the implement upon the Work.
