APPLICATION EILED JULYIL, 1905.
UNITED PATENT OFFICE- Specification of Letters Batent. Appl-i c ation'filed July 14, mos. Serial No. 269,581.
HAND-PROTECTlNG DEVICE.
Patented June 26, 1906.
To wZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ROBERT M. CLARK and FANNIE E.. CLARK, of Newton, in the county of Middle'sex and State of Massachusetts, citizens of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand-Protecting Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being .had to the accom anying drawings, forming a part of this spec' cation, in explaining its nature.
The invention relates to a device or guard for the hands, and is especially ada ted for covering or enveloping the hands 0 infants in such a manner that they cannot scratch or hurt themselves and to prevent also the undesirable habit of suckin the thumb or The adaptation of t e device is also such that it may be Worn by those suffering from skin diseases, providing the hand with a cool clean covering, internally antisepticized, if desired, which also will act as a guard, preventing the user from scratching his face or body The especial object of the invention is to provide a device or guard which will permit of the free natural use of the wrist and elbow joints, which also will be made of such material as to retain its normal shape and of such a sha e as will not too closely envelop the hand, ut will rather be large enough to provide on its interior a hollow chamber in which the hand may loosely be contained and the thumb or fingers moved in a natural manner without disturbing contact with the sides of the guard, and which guard also being thus self shape-retainin and of large capacit will accordingl be coo afiording a circulatlon of air about t e hand of the wearer.
It is the further object of the invention to make the device or guard of some such material as will be light andwhich may be easily cleansed, the point being to usecin the construction of the device a material which will combine lightness and cleanliness.
The invention can best be seen and understood by reference to the drawings, in which Figure 1' shows the device or guard in plan; Fig. 2, a cross-section of the same; Figs. 3, 4, and 5, show in plan modified views of the device to which special reference will hereinafter he made.
Referring to the drawings, A re resents the device or guard comprising a hol ow shell of some stiff or shape-retaining material, which will be light and easily cleansedsuch Ias hard rubber, celluloid, aluminium, hard pressed paper having a varnished surface, or the like-and which guard is also preferably spherical in'shape, as shown in Fig. 1, or it may be oval or pear shaped, as shown in Fig. 4, or oblong, as shown in Fig. 5, or for that matter of any shape adapted to provide in its interior a chamber in which the hand may conveniently be contained. Whatever be its shape, a small section is removed from one side of the guard, leaving therein a hole or o ening a large enough to admit of a hand of t euser orpatient. Around this hole or opening there is secured to the guard a cuff A, of cloth or other suitable material. The cufi -may be secured by sewing or in any other suitable manner, and in Fig. 3 the guard is shown provided about its hand-admitting hole or opening with an annular projecting portion a, over which the cuff may convenlently be sli ed and secured. This cuff, after the han side the guard, is fastened by a safety-pin, button, or other contrivance to the sleeveof the wearer, by which the guard is held in place. There are also to be noted the perforations or openings a in the guard, through which air may enter the guard and freely circulate inside the same about the hand of the wearer.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. A device or hand-guard of the character specified comprising a hollow shell of some light, stiff material forming inside the same a chamber in which the hand is adapted to be contained and have freedom of movement in any part or ortion thereof and a hole or opening in sai guard for admitting the hand.
21 A device or hand-guard of the character specified comprising a hollow shell of some llght, stifi material, forming inside the same a chamber of relatively large capacity in which the hand is adapted to be contained and have freedom of movement in any part as been inserted through it in guard may be secured to the sleeve of the about the hole or opening therein by means 10 wearer. of which cull the guard may be secured to the 4. k Ccllevice 0r hand-gualrid of tile1 1character sleeve of the wearer. s eci e com risin a ho ow s e or some 5 tllin, hard ma teriah forming inside the same g l ig' a chamber in which the hand is adapted to be contained, a hole or opening in said guard In presence offor admitting the hand, and a cuff of cloth or E. HEATH CLARK,
other flexible material secured to said guard C. J. CLARK.
