Be it known that I, 'JosEPH HANsER, a citizen of the United States ofAmerica, residing at Manheim, in the county of Lee and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in' Valve-Gear for Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates .to steam-engines, and especially to a reversing mechanism therefor; and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple inexpensive device of this character which may be readily installed for use, one whereby the direction of rotation of the engine-shaft maybe reversed, and one in which the engine may be stopped when circumstances require. r Further objects of the invention are to provide a simple and eflicient member for connecting the valve-stem on the frame and for guiding the same in its movements and to produce an improved form of rocking memer having means for engaging the connecting-rod and guiding the latter in its movements.
With these and other objects in view. the invention. comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an engine equipped with a governing mechanism embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the valve-stem guide, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the rocking member or bell-crank lever.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the engine-frame, in which is journaled a shaft 2, provided with a crank arm orpin 3, on which is pivoted one end of a pitman 4, connected at its other end with the. piston-rod, (not shown,) said rod being e uipped, as usual, with a piston-head movab e in a cylinder 5. The foregoing parts are of the usual or any appropriate construction and material and adapted to operate in the ordinary manner.
Fixed upon the shaft 2 is an eccentrichead 6, engaged by an eccentric-strap 7, carrying an eccentric-rod 8, pivoted at its outer end to an oscillatory member or lever 9, in turn pivoted at its longitudinal center, as at 10, to the frame 1, said member being provided with a longitudinally-extending curved slot or guideway 11.

The rack 23 is rovided with end sockets or seats 24 25 an .an intermediate socket'26, any one of which may receive the pawl'22 for fixing the lever 21 against movement. The stem 14 is sustained by a guide member or bracket 27, bolted to the frame 1 and having outturned portions or ears 28, providedwith perforations 29 to receive the stem.
In practice steam is admitted to the chest 15 in the usual manner and thence throu h the ports to the cylinder 5 for operating t e piston, it being understood that the latter is o erated owing to the steam being admitted a ternately to the op osite ends thereof through the operation 0 the slide-valve, carried by the stem 14 The shaft 2 is rotated, as usual, through the medium of the pitman 4, connected therewith and with the piston, and as the shaft rotates it acts, by means of the eccentric-rod 8, for rocking the member 9 to reciprocate the valve-stem 14 through the intermediate link connection 13. When the 5 parts are in the full-line position illustrated in Fig. 1, with the connecting-pin 12 disposed at the lower end of the rocking member, the
shaft 2 will be rotated in one direction.
When, however, the lever 21'is swung rear- Io'o owing to the rockin of the lever 18 on its pivot, be moved to t e other or upper end of the oscillatory member 9, thereby reversing IO 5 the direction of rotation of shaft 2. When the lever 21 is moved to an intermediate position, with the pawl 22 seated in the recess 26, as illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, the
rocking member or lever v18 and link 13 will no assume the dotted-line position shown in said figure, thereby bringing the connectingpin 12 to a central position within the guideopening 11, thus renderin the stem 14 and its valve inoperative by t e eccentric-rod 8 and stopping the operation of the engine. It is to be particularly observed that durin operation the stem 14 will through the me ium of the improved bracket be smoothly and actively guided in its movements and that the portion 17 of the bell-crank 18 subserves the twofold function of guidin the connecting-rod 13 and presenting an e cient connection between the latter and the rocking member, whereby the rod may without in ury be positively moved for shifting its fulcrum in the member 9, it being understood that the rod 13 will have a sufficient amount of vertical play in the slot 16 to permit of its proper movements through the medium of the rocking member 9. i
From the foregoing it is ap arent that I produce a sim le reversing mec anism which may be read' y installed and one whereby the direction of rotation of the engine-shaft maybe readily reversed or the engine stopped, it being understood that in attaining t ese ends minor changes in the details herein set forth may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claime as new is The combination with an engine and its frame, of a movable valve-stem adapted for operatin a valve to admit steam to the enine cy inder, a bracket attached to the ame and having spaced perforated ears to receive and guide the valve-stem, a connecting-rod pivoted to the latter, a bell-crank lever pivoted on the frame and having a laterally-extending perforated ear through which the rod operates and by which the same is guided in its movements, an eccentric-rod operated by the engine-shaft, operative connections between the eccentric and connectin rod, said connections including a pivoted rocking member having an arcuate slot in which one end of the connecting-rod is movably connected, and an operating-lever connected with the bell-crank lever for operating the same to shift the pivot of the con- Eectmg-rod within the slotted rocking mem- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
