Be it known thatwe, ORATUS S. FRENoH and J OHN W; M1LLER,-citizens of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented new and. useful Improvements in Spark- Arresters, of which thefollowing is aspecification. p
This invention is a spark-arrester, particularly adapted for use on traction-engines, although applicable to locomotives or stationary engines.
The arrester consists, broadly, of a series ofv pivoted plates which are arranged to lap each other and form baflies which prevent the ,pas-. sage of sparks. l

Referring specifically to the drawings, the
boiler-shell'isindicated at 6, the stack at 7, and some of the boiler-tubes at 8. ,Theconstruction shown is that of a traction-engine, For use on locomotives the spark-arrester will be placed in the smoke-box at the head of the boiler beyond the ends of the tubes.
At 9 are indicated two supportingbarsi which are secured to the boiler-shell on opposite sides thereof, as by bolts'lO.
At 11 are indicated the series of plates forming the arrester. Each of these consists i of a piece of angleiron with the angle or flange 12 at the top. The plate has at the ends pivot-pins 13, which'are mounted in holes in the bars 9, so that the plates may be turned and set at any angle desired. The two end plates are of double width or have extensions 14, which close against the boilertubes and the boiler-head, respectively, so
as to close the large openings which would otherwise exist at such places.
The exhaust-nozzle which creates the draft is indicated at 15 and extends up between side, the resulting space being closed by a plate 16.
By means of staples 17 the plates are loosely connected at their upper edges to a bar 18, which extends above the same and by means of which the plates are swung simul taneously. This bar may be shifted in a i,
number of ways, one of which is illustrated in the drawings, consisting of a lever-handle 19 mounted upon a bracket 20 on the outside of the boiler-shell and connected by a rod 21,

The rod 21 isnotched, as at 22, to receive a spring-catch 23, which works through a recess in the bracket 20. The extent to which the plates are opened or closed may be varied by raising or lowering the bar 21 and set as desired by engaging the catch 23 in the de sired notch. Forlocomotive use the rod 9 Will preferably be connected by suitable le vers and connecting-rods to a hand-lever in the cab.
"In use the platesof the arrester' after the fire is started are set a slight distance apart, and the draft will cause the cinders and sparks to strike the angles of the .plates and bedefiected without, however, unduly ob structing the draft and outlet for the smoke.
