.Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June v1906.
.ippiimion mea January 26,1906.4 serial No. 297.937.
Be itknownihati, oT-ISW'. EVERETT', a aii zen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in th'e'countyv if'YVo-rcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new .and useful- Improvements in Roller-Skates,y
of which the `following is a specification. My invention relates to roller-skates and to fthe class' ofroller-skates whichhave rocking or tilting trucks for the rollers.
` .The object of my invention is to improve u onthe construction of roller-skates `of the I. c ass'iref'erred'to, and more particularly to [strengthen the footplatef, a`nd to: improve upon-the construction off'the vroller-trucks and to p rovidev means for regulating or-ad 'usting the. rocking orl tilting ymovement o the roller-trucks. i My invention consists in' certain novel features of'constructionof my im rovements, as
' will be hereinafter fully descri ed.
provements to the drawings, Figure 1 is a a roller-skate embodying my irn- One roller atthe front of the skate is-vleft olf in this ligure. Fig. 2 is a Referring slde view o cross-section on line 2 2 Fi 1, lookingin the direction of arrow a, same gure. Figs. 3, 4,
' 5, 6, 7, and 8 `show the several parts of the roller-truck detached from the skate and 30 from each other, and Fig. 9'is afplan view of the hanger shownin Fig. 3 looking vin the dil thereto t eend of a strap 4,which y around the foot at theankle rection .of arrow b, same figure.
In the accompanying drawings, lis the footplate ofthe skate, preferably made of sheet metal and having the toe-clam 's 2 at the front end thereof, which areadJusted b a key, (not shown,) turning a right and lbft Vhandl threaded screw 3 (see Fig. 2)- in theI flanges, which extend at substantially right angles to ythe foot-plate 1, as'shown in. Fig. 2.
The flanges 1 .act to strengthen the foot-l plate .-1. l I Extending through the central portionof the feotf'plate 1, on the under side thereof, 1
preferably' have a supplemental `plate or bar 5, which isvof truss shape and is riveted at its. endsto the foot-plate 1 and issecu'red atl its MEG. COMPANY, A ooEPoEA'rioNoEiiAs.-
central portion to the under side of the footplate 1 by a stud 6. `(See Fig. 1.) The-sup. plemental. plate or barv 5 acts to strengthen and make more rigid the foot-plate 1 and may be flat or of other shape in cross-section.
The two roller-trucks are of the same construction, anda description ofI one will answer for both.
, The truck hanger or bracket 7` is preferably made of sheet metal of Asubstantially the'. p
shape shown, having two upright portions'.
lwith side extensions 7 which are riveted t the foot-plate 1, (see Fig. 2,) and the. fori, '-wardly-extending portion with the two sideI extensions 7 thereon, which are riveted tothe foot-plate 1. A plate 8, having downwardly-extending side iianges 8f, and a'down-. wardly-extendi'ng end 8 ,'having an opening therethrough, extends upon the'under side of the hanger or bracket'7 and is riveted thereto.
A block of rubber for other yielding matei- 1.,'
rial 9 forming a cushion, extends betweenv l` the side anges 8 on' the plate 8 and is held-in position` and' adjustably compressed Iby a plateV 10, vtermed therollercarrierj and in this instance made in two part'slO and10 riveted together, which extends upon the un- ,35
kder sideo the yielding block 9 and has one end bent4 u wardly and a stud 11 secured therein, which is adapted to extend loosely through the opening 1n the downwardly-exi if-1 I tending end 8 on the plate 8 and to act as -a pivot-stud. vThe otherendv of the plate"10"" as a hole therethrough to loosely receive an adjusting bolt or screw v12. The screw 12 has a nut 13 on its threaded portion, and'its l I threaded end is adflted to be screwed into a y threaded hole in the end of the plate 8 and'in the hanger or'bracket 7 to secure the end of the plate 10 to the' end ofthe plate 8 andthe hanger 7 and to secure the yielding block between the'same.
Extending down from thelplate or roller carrier 10 and in this'instance forming a art thereof, isa bearing 10a for the axle 14 o the rollers 15. 'The rollers 15 are' preferably of metal, having metal rims, and are provided with ball-bearings and are mounted to turn y tionary on the axle 121, instance is sta Y anysuiatiejiimivigiigiaieiviihstiuaioa f ing an o ening therein for a pivot-stud, and
of rollers may be employed; but -I'prefer to construct the rollers 15 in the'manner shown and described in my pending application for Letters Patent, Serial No, 263,712.
By means of the adjusting screw or bolt 12 the end of the plate or roller carrier 10 may be moved toward or away from the'plate 8 to compress or release the yielding block or cushion 9 and regulate the action thereof, as desired, to `regulate and adjust the rocking or tilting movement of the plate o'r roller carrier l0, and to cause said roller-carrier to rock or tilt with greater orless freedom, as will be well understood.
It will be understood that thedetails of construction of my improvements may be varied, if' desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is- A; f
1. In a roller-skate, a roller-truck ada ted to, be secured to the under side of the ootj. plate, comprising a metal hanger or bracket aving attaching ends, a plate secured to the under side of said hanger or bracket, and havor an a justing-screw, and a second plate or i roller carrier having a stud thereon adapted to enter the opening in thejirst-mentioned plate, and a hole therein to receive the' adjusting-screw, and also having a bearing thereon' .secured to the under side of said hanger or bracket, and having an opening therein for a pivot-stud, and for an adjusting-screw, and a secondplate having a stud thereon adapted to enter the o ening vin the first-mentioned 1 plate, and' a-ho e therein to receive the adjusting-screw, and also having a bearing thereon for the axle of the rollers, a yielding block or cushion extending between said two plates, and a screw or bolt for adjusting the relative position of said plates, to regulate the action of said cushion.
