ROLLER-SKATE.
SPECXFICATION forming part of Letters atent No. 584,089, dated J une 8, 1897.
Application filed l'uly 23,1896. Serial Noi 600,272. (No modelf) To @ZZ whom may concern:
Beit known that I, JULrL's B orrnnnrncn, merchant, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Berlin, in the German Empire, have invented certain new-and useful Improvements in Roller-Skates, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates especially to an innovation in such rollenskates which have two rollers in a line along the center of the skate.
Figure l of annexed drawings shows a side view of a complete roller-skate. Figs. 2, 3, 4, 6, and '7 show the attachment of the rollerholders to the foot-plate, in which, according to Figs. 2, 3, and 4l, an elastic cushion is used between the roller-holder and the foot-plate. This is lacking in Figs. 6 and 7. Figs. 5, S, and 4: arc intended to explain the front rollerholder, which revolves on a vertical pivot fixed to the footplate and which can be fixed rigidly from the side of the same. This mobility is limited by means of striking-pegs.
The foot-plate a, Fig. l, which is fixedto the sole and heel ot' the shoe by means of a thumb-screw f and clamp device d d d2 e, is provided at the front and at the back with roller-holders l) 7L. As the hind roller is rigid, one can, in using an elastic cushion Z, Fig. 2, attach the same between the foot-plate d and the roller-holder h, while the roller-holder h can be attached by means of the bolts c' to the footplatc l in such a manner that the surface of the roller-holder h can yield on all sides to the pressure of the roller.
In using an elastic cushion 7c, Figs. 3 and et, for the front roller-holders D the lower surface of the roller-holder is covered bya metal plate b2, and this metal plate b2, as well as the cushion K, is attached. movably to the foot* plate a by inea-ns of the bolt t'. A pivot r,
Fig. 3, which is attached to the foot-plate c and which passes through the cushion le, as well as through. the plate h2, carries on its lower end an adjustable roller-holder b.
For the purpose of limiting the rotation the roller-holder is provided on both sides with a peg n, Figs. 4 and 8, and the plate h2 has on both sides two striking-pegs, so that the roller-holder b with. the peg n can only turn to the right or left round the pivot r, Fig. 3, between the pegs fm fm., 5.
To obtain for fancy skates the intended mobility of the front roller-holder Zi and, on the other hand, make the front roller-holder rigid for beginners, the roller-holder h, Fig. 7, is screwed fast to the plate h2 and to the foot-plate ci by means of the screws y', which pass through the holes y, Figs. 3 and 6. The roller c or g has an elastic tire attached to a hub S, Fig. 3. This hub has inthe center an oil-cup o, so that the balls, which by the inward pressure of the ball-bearing halves t are maintained in the hub S, are constantly in contact with the oil contained in the oilcup o.
Asis shown by Fig. 3,the ball-bearin g halves t can be provided with a cap p, which covers the neck of the hub S, thus preventing the dust from entering into the ball-bearings or into the oil-cup. The elastic tire of the roller c g is made, as seen in Fig. 3, of rubber, and which is placed over the V-shaped groove of the hub.
l claim- In combination, the foot-plate, the pivotstud extending down therefrom, a wheelbracket pivoted on said stud and having lateral extensions, the plate b2 between the wheelbracket and the footeplate, the stops between the adjacent faces of the plate h2 and the wheel-bracket, said plate b2 having portions which together with the lateral extensions of thc bracket are perforated so that by bringing said perforations into alinement the wheelbrackets may be rigidly fixed by a screw or pin, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
