Be it known that 1, CHARLES HENRY Mo- CREADY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Neodesha, in the county of Wilson and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Turning Pipes and other Articles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to machines for screwing up and unscrewing pipes, tubes, and the likesuch, for instance, as shown and described in the Letters Patent of the United States No. 614,333, granted to me November 15,1898.
The object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved machine for turning pipes, screw-rods, and-other articles in a very simple and convenient manner and allowing compensation for the longitudinal movement of the article unscrewed or screwed up.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same,
which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodimentof the invention I is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improvement as ap lied to a pipe. Fig. 2 is a sectionalv side e evation of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of the swivel connection between the jaws and the operating-lever for the same. Fig; 4 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 5 is an enlarged side elevation of the joint for the sections of an operating-lever. Fig. 6 is a face view of the same, parts being in section; and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of part of one of the jaws.
The pipe, screw-rod, or other article A to be turned for screwing or other pur oses is encircled by the flexible jaws B and pivotally connected attheir ends with levers C and C, engaging at their free ends eyes D and D secured to a ring D, mounted to turn on wheels or other bearings E, arranged on a suitable base F. The ring D is adapted to be turned either by hand or power, for instance, by the use of an engine G, having its main shaft G provided with a pinion Gr insmesh with a gear-wheel D secured to or formed on the under side of the ring D. Each of the le and the jaws B are arranged in different parallel planes, and each of the levers C and O is made in two sections C C pivotally conne'cted with each other at C and pressed on by a spring C engaging shoulders C of the section 0 and 0*. (See Figs. 2 and 5.) By this arrangeinent the sections C and C are yieldingly connected with each other to compensate for the lengthwise movement ofthear" ticle A when screwed up or unscrewed without changing the position of the base F and the wheel E, mounted to turn thereon.

The upper end of the lever C is preferably provided with a swivel ()7, it being understood that each lever is fulcrumed at one end of a jaw and'pivotally connected with the adjacent end of the other jawthat is, as shown in Fig. 1, the lever C is fulcrumed on the angular link B of the jaw B, while the lever C is fulcrumed on the angular link B of the jaw B. Each of the jaws B and B is made of a plurality of links B pivotally connected with each other by bolts B to permit using more or. less links for each jaw to suit different sizes of pipes, screw-rods, or other articles to be operated upon.

vers C and C draw the ends of the jaws B and B toward each other, so as to cause the jaws B and B to close and firmly grip the article A. On the further turning of the ring Dthe links 0 and C are carried bodily along, and as the links are connected with the jaws B and B firmly gripping the article A it is evident that the article A is turned.
In order to permit convenient detachment of the jaws B and B from the levers C and C, the end link B of the j aw B engages a removable pin C on the lever C, so that when this pin is withdrawn the jaw B is readily disconnected from the lever C to allow opening of the other jaw B and consequent disengagement of both jaws from the article A. It is understood that when the article A is screwed up or unscrewed, and conse uently moves in the direction of its length, t en the sections C and C of each lever C and 0 yield relatively to each other to allow of moving the article A a considerable distancejnlthe direction of its length before it becomes necessary to change the position of the jaws B and B on the article A for obtaining another grip.
The device is very simple and durable in construction, not liable to get easily out of order, and easily manipulated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A machine for turning pipes, screw-rods, and like articles, comprising jaws adapted to grip the article, levers comprising jointed sections having a limited angular movement with respect to each other and connected with the said jaws, and a ring mounted to turn and en aging the said levers.
2. A mac 'ne for turning pipes, screw-rods and like articles, comprising aws adapted to grip the article, a lever fulcrumed on one jaw and connected with the other aw, and a ring mounted to turn and engaging the said lever.
3. A machine for turning pipes, screw-rods and like articles, comprising flexible jaws adapted to encircle and grip the article, levers, each fulcrumed on one jaw and pivotally connected with the other jaw, and a ring mounted to turn and engaging the free ends of the said levers.
.4. A machine for turning pipes, screw-rods and like articles, comprising flexible jaws adapted to encircle and grip the article, each jaw being formed of a plurality of removable links to permit the use of more or less links, according to the size of the article to be gripped, levers, each fulcrumed on one jaw and pivotally connected with the other jaw, and a ring mounted to turn and engaging the free ends of the said levers.
5. A machine for turning pipes, screw-rods and like articles, comprising flexible jaws adapted to encircle and grip the article, levers, eachfulcrumed on one jaw and pivotally connected with the other jaw, each lever be ing segmental in form and made in sections yieldingly connected with each other, and means ror o erating the said levers in unison.
6. A machine for turning pipes, screw-rods sasoa and like articles, comprising flexible jaws adapted to encircle and grip the article, levers having swivel ends pivotally connected with the adjacent ends of the jaws, and means for operating the said levers.
'7. A machine for turning pipes, screw-rods and like articles, comprising flexible aws adapted to encircle and grip the article, levers having swivel ends pivotally connected with the adjacent ends of the jaws, the levers being segmental in shape and made in sec tions yieldingly connected with each other to compensate for the movement of the article in the direction of its length, and means for operating the said levers.
8. A machine for turning pipes, screw-rods and like articles, comprising flexible jaws adapted to encircle and grip the article, levers having. swivel ends pivotally connected with the adjacent ends of the jaws, a ring connected with the free ends of the said levers, and a bearing for the said ring to turn on.
9. A machine for turning pipes, screw-rods and like articles, comprising flexible jaws adapted to encircle and grip the article, levers having swivel ends pivotally connected with the adjacent ends of the jaws, a ring connected with the free ends of the said levers, and a bearing for the said ring to turn on, the said jaws and ring lying in diflerent parallel planes.
10. A machine for turning pipes, comprising a ring mounted to turn, gripping-jaws oilset vertically from the ring and coaxial therein with, andlevers comprising jointed sections connecting the jaws and the ring, the sections of the levers having a limited angular movement with respect to each other whereby to compensate for the movement of the jaws.
