IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-HUSKERS.

KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS: i s f f That I, SAMUEL WESSQN, of the city and county of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and usefulV Improvements in Corn-Huskers; and I do herebyv declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, and in whichl Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of my improved corn-husker.
Figure 2 represents a top or plan view of my improved corn-husker, with the feed-table and gxiide-cover removed.
Figure 3 represents a. longitudinal section on line A B, g. I.
Figure 4 represents a cross-section on line C D, fig. l.
Figure 5 represents a section on line E, fig. 1, and
Figure 6 represents an'inside view of one ot'- the end-plates of the ear-separating wheel.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail.
In the drawings the main frame Vis marked A, having side-boards B B.
Upon the cross-pieces C D are supported, in suitable bearings, two sets of rolls, E-F E F, the rolls' E E being placed lower than the rollsF F, while all the rolls are arranged upon their respective bearings in inclined positions, as fully shown in the drawings.
Both sets of rolls E F are so geared at their upper ends that, when the driving-shaft GrV is put in motion, they turn towards each other, as indicated by the arrows, 5g. 4.
A small roller, H, is arranged upon the outside of 'each set of rolls E F. Therolls H H are made smaller at the top, for a purpose hereafter to be explained.
Each set of. rolls E F is to be covered with vulcanized rubber.
i The rolls E F, constructed and arranged as above described, have been used for a similar purpose before, but the machine failed to operate successfully, and my improvements are designed to remedy the defects in said imperfectly-operating machines.
A shield or cover, I, is hinged to the inner side of boards B B by a hinge, a, on each side, while above the boardI is arranged, upon the top of the frame of' the machine, a feed-table, J, having its front end cut away, as shown aborto allow the ears of corn to fall down upon the double chute or ear-guide K, )which is divided by the b ridge er centre-ridge K', so as to make two channels or ways, L L, for the ears to pass to the bushing-rolls, one way delivering or guiding the ears to the proper position to beacted-upon by the husking- :rolls on one side of 'the machine, and the other way guiding the ears to the husking-rolls on the other side of the machine.
It will be seen, by reference to iig. 4 of the drawings, that the ways LL do not guide the ears directly between their respective bushing-rolls, butdirect'the ears first on to the rollsE H, from which they are thrown between the rolls F, after they have so far. descended as to pass upon rolls E F, without danger of having `the points- Vofthe Vhusks caught and drawn in betweenthe husking-rolls in a bunch.
To facilitate the proper descent of the ears, as above described, the upper ends of the rolls H H are made smaller than they are at their middles, whereby the ears are not directed towards the rolls E until they have passed down so far as not to be presented or thrown end foremost to the bushing-rolls, thus avoiding the danger,
in case the ears descend tips rst, of `the points of all the husks being caught in a bunch by the rolls, therebyl washing thcear, if not clogging the machine.
.To insure the perfect husking of the ears, the inner side-boards B B are contracted towards the rear end of the machine, as shown in g. 2, whereby the ear is` sure to be forced over and between the hashing-rolls E F, before it leaves the machine.
The covering-board I is made with a centre, M, of V-shape, to t between thetops of the rolls F F, to prevent the ears of corn from becoming displaced or thrown from one side of the machine to the other.
As the covering-boardI is hinged at each side to the inner side-boards B B', it can be turned up by simply taking off the feed-table J and detaching one leaf of the hinges a.
The rolls H H are supported on adjustable bearings, d (i, so that they can be set in any desired relative position as respects the rolls E E.
The rolls E E are also supported in bearing-pieces, e e, which can be moved back and forth on the armsf f, which project laterally from thebearing-pi'eces O O, which support the rolls F F, for the purpose of setting the rolls E E nearer to o r farther from the rolls F F.
The bearing-piecese e are so made that they can beifastened to the arms ff, when once adjusted, and screws gg, which pass through lips or angle-arms 1 1 on the ends of armsff, may be used for the purpose of settingr or holding pieces e e.
The rolls E E and F-F are all properly geared at their upper ends, while the shaft of one of the rolls is extended, as shown at P, and is provided with a gear, Q, to mesh into the gear R on the shaft G, which carries a gear, S, on its outer end, to mesh into a gear, T, on the driving-shaft U, upon which are arranged the earseparating knives or bars V.
The ear-separating knives or bars V have tenons to iit grooves 7L in the plates W W, which are fitted to slip upon the ends of shaft U. i
It will thus b e seen that the bars or knives V can be easily but securely fastened to the plates W W, all that is necessary being to drive plates W W on to the tenons of the bars, and then lkey or fasten the plates to the shaft U. f
Shaft U is supported in the peculiarly-constructed bearing-pieces X X, fastened to the front corners of the machine. The upper ends of the bearing-pieces X X are made in box-form, as shown at m, iig. 5, to receive the boxes n n, in which the journals of the ear-separating roll X turn and are supported.
The roll X is held down with a yielding pressure by theV springp, which is composed of two pieces s s, united in the middle, as shown at 9 in the drawings. i
By means of the set or thumb-'screws 10 10, springp can be made to press upon the boxes n. 12. of roll X, with any desired degree of pressure. I
The regulating-table Z is hinged to the top of the main frame A, at the points 11 11'7 while thumb-screws 12 12 pass through the upper side, for the purpose of elevating and depressing the upper edge 13, for the proper separation of ears of different sizes.
In case the stalks and ears are large, then the thumb-screws 12 12 are turned so as to depress or lower the upper edge 13, while, if the stalks are small and the ears are small, the screws 12 12 are turned so as to elevate the upper edge 13. The points of the screws 12 12 abut against the stands 14 14.
The guard or shield 15 is fastened to the box-bearing pieces m m, by screws 16.
The object of guard 15 is to prevent the stalks from being thrown back over the roll X.
It is desirable to havethe shaft U run firm, and also to have the roll X so supported, that it will not be forced out of its proper relative position, asrespects the bars or knives on the shaft U, and as a means of accomplishing both of the above results, while at the same time providing for proper reception and support of the thumb-screws 10 10, the boi-bearing partsm arecast with the bearing-pieces X, so that when in place, as shown in g. 5, a strong support is obtained for said parts, both from the tops and front sides of the corner-posts of the machine.
The hinges to the ear-cover or shieldI are made adjustable, so that the ear-cover or shield I can be adjusted up or down,.to fit ears of different sizes.
The ear-cover or shield I may be made of different materials and of di'erent shapes, and still answer a good purpose.
The operation is as follows:
The stalks are laid upon table J, and fed by the operator between the roll X and the bars or knives V, the latter having a rapid motion with shaft U, in the direction indicated by the arrow; said motion being'commnnicated by hand or power properly applied, as may be preferred. Y
The stalks are drawn through between the roll X and the knives or bars V, but the 'cars are broken oif by the combined action of the edgev13 of guard Z, and the bars V and roll X, and fall back down upon the ear-guide K, from which vthey pass through the chutes or ways L L, to and upon the husking-rolls E F E F, which strip the husks from the ears and drop them below the rolls, while the (lars are delivered at the rear of the machine.
Having described my improved corn-husking machine, what I claim therein as as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I Y 1. The hinged guard or separating-plate Z, in combination with the separating-roll X and bars V, substantially as and for the purposes stated. A
2. The combination, with the guard or hinged separating-plate Z, of the adjusting-Screws 12 12 and stands 14 14, as and for the purposes set forth. A
3. The combination of the shield 15 with separating-roll X and bars V, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. rIhe combination, with two or more sets of husking-rolls, of a hinged ear-covering plate, arranged as described, so as to retain the ears in proper contact with the rolls, and provided with one or more dividing-pieces or partitions, extending between each two contiguous or adjoining sets of rolls, in the manner and for the purposes shown and set forth. i
5. The combination, with each setof husking-rolls E F, of an auxiliary adjustable roll, H, arranged, wlth relation to the exterior or lower roll E of each set, in the manner and for the purposes shown and specified.
6. The combination, `With each set of husking-rolls, of an adjustable auxiliary roll, H, made vtapering at its upper end, substantially as and for the purposes sot forth.
7. The combination, with two or more sets of husking-rolls and adjustable auxiliary rolls, ofthe removable ear-covering plate and guide I M, the ear-guide K, and chutes or ways L, for delivering the ears to the auxiliary l rolls, the Whole being arranged to operate substantially in themauner -and for the purposes shown and set forth.
8. .The combination, with two or more sets of husking-rolls, of a continuous ear-cover or shield I, with its division-piece or pieces M, substantially as and for the purposes'set forth.
