Specification of Letters'. Patent.

lApplication lecl July 28,1905. Serial No. 271.586.
` ToI all whom t concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. WATTEFs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Im rovements in Binder-Frames, of which the lollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to loose-leaf binderframes and it consists of certain novel and useful improvements on the binder-frame covered by Letters Patent No. 785,924, granted to me on March 28,- 1905.
The object ofthe invention is to simplify, strengthen, and otherwise improve the construction of the frame and also to arrange the working parts wholly within the relatively movable members, so that they will not be disclosed at the back of the frame when the frame is extended to its greatest width.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one embodiment of the invention, and, referring thereto, Figure 1 is a plan view of the frame extended to its greatest width, the covers and hinges therefor bein omitted. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the ine 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view.
In the drawings, 10 is a back member, and 11 represents two relatively movable members to which the covers are attached by suitable hinges in the usual manner. The ends 13 ofthe movable members are arranged to work within and close to the ends 14 ofthe back member, and these ends thus act as guides for the movable members and assist vin maintaining the members. in proper relative position. p
A screw-rod 15 is mounted in brackets 16 within one of the movable members, and a guide-rod 17 is secured in brackets 18 within the other movable member. Two or more parallel cross-pieces 19 are pivotallymounted on studs 20, located rigidly and centrally on the back member and projectingup between the adjacent edges of the movable members. These cross-pieces are pivotally connected at their ends to travelers 21 on the guide-rod and screw-threaded travelers 21'*` is accomplished by means of the screw-rod, which is operated by a key. (Not shown.) One end 15 of the screw-rod is shaped to receive the operating-key, and the adjacent end of the movable member is provided with an opening 22, and the adjacent end of the back member is provided with a slot 22 registering with the' opening V22 to permit the key to be inserted therethrough to engage the screw-rod at any time. I prefer to employ guides 23, which are fastened to the back member at each end of the frame and project across the movable members to assist ing the screw-rod the travelers thereon will be moved lengthwise of the rod, and thereby swing the lcrossieces on their pivots and move the movab e members uniformly to expand or contract the frame according to the direction in which the screw may be operated. The movement of the movable members is-uniform, and they will therefore always have the same relation to the back member. As the cross-pieces are connected at their ends on one movable member to the screw-rod and on the other movable member to the guide-rod and at their middle to the back member, it is apparent that the relative position of the several members will be constantly maintained.
The means for operating themovable membersis all contained within said members, and hence the frame can` be expanded to its greatest width without disclosing the parts of this operating means at the back of the frame.
The construction and arrangement of the parts is such that the friction of the moving parts is reduced to a minimum, and this'enables the frame to be operated easily. The construction also provides a strong and durable frame which will not become loose and get out of order in usage.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isj 1. Abinder-frame comprising a back mem- `ber and two relatively movable members, a
screw-rod mounted on one of said movable members, .a guide-rod on the other movable member, travelers on said rods, and' arallel cross-pieces pivotally mounted on t eback IOO member near the ends ol' the frame and pivelers on the guida-rod pivotally connected to otallT connected at their ends to said travelthe ends of the cross-pieces, and a pair 0l" ers. screw-threaded travelers on the sorew-rod 2. Abnderframe oomprisingabaok memd l pivotallT Connected to the other ends of the 5 ber and two relatively movable members, a cross-pieces.
sCreW-rod mounted Within one of said members, a guide-rod mounted Within the other WILLIAM J' TWATTERS movable member, a pair of parallel eross- Witnesses: pieces pivotally mounted on the back mem- ALEXANDER VVATTERs,
io ber near the ends of the frame, a pair of trav WM. O. BELT.
