No. 823,643. i
Be it known thatI, WESLEY SLA'YDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wichita, inthe lcounty of Sedgwick and State of .',Kansas, have invented` certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplers, of which the following is a specificationrlhe object of'my inventionis to provide an improved constructionof car-coupler` whichv willr render thecoupling and uncouplin of the cars safe and avoid the probability o in- 4V; jury tothe operators, which embodies improved means whereby the cars may kautof after fully described, and speciiically set forth y p in the `accompanying claims# I A f .2Q
I l matically `couple lthemselves ,when ycoming together, and which embodies a new anduse-,. u ful arrangement and combination of the parts and' certain ldetails ofA constructionl herein' ,For a full description ofthe inventionand e lthe merits thereofv andxialso ,to acquire va knowledge ofthefdetails of construction ofv the means for effecting the results reference v5o in section and with the coupling parts in side is to be had to the following description and,
accompanying drawings, inl which car-coupler.
f elevation. 3 is 'a detail perspective view detail of my improved coupling-link. Fig. 4.1is a heads.v t i Corresponding and like partsare referred in all the views of the reference characters. V
Referring to the-drawings, the numeral 1 designates the meeting portions of two cars that' are `equipped with my improved construction of coupler. Thedraw-head 2 of one of said cars isa boX-like or hollow structure provided with an open outer endand with two recessed sides forming outwardlyfacing ledges 3 nearthe edge thereof, with a beveled lower front edge 4 and with a prefer ablyrectangularopening 5 extending through its bottomadjacent the said front edge. The said draw-head 2 is also provided with a hinged top or lid 6, the said lid being hinged to the draw-head proper at or near the rear end of the former and being provided at its opposite end facing the end of the draw-bar with a beveled edge on its under side, (desig- Specication of Letters .Patent` perspective view of `one of the draw-A .horizontally-extending wings 16, also Ana ted7,) with a loop or eye 8 in said edgeand with a preferably rectangular opening 9 eX alinement with the openingv when the lid 6 is in closed positionl with respect to the draws,
bar. In saidposition the lid 6, which, as
shownfis in the-form of a flat late, rests upon the ledges 3. 'The sides o the draw-k bal that COIlStitute the ledges 3 are preferf 'y 6 5l a n tion of its llengthto provide a'longitudinally-I extending socket vfor the reception of-oney end ofthe coupling-link 11, said link beingA pro'- Patented :rime 19, 1906. ` tending entirelytherethrough and in vertical vided at one end with an aperture Vor socket.- ,f 12, through which the` pin 13 is inserted, said 1 2a, so as to detachablyconnect the said end,l
f, pin being also inserted through thedraw-bar 1 l 75 y v of thelink in the draw-bar.-A The pin 13 isof sufficient smaller diameter `thanjthe opening 12 of the link through which it extends as to permit'the --1ink to be rockedlin a .vertical A plane, and the rearlower edge of the link is beveled, as shownat 14, tolimit the upward movement of theopposite end of'theflink in connection with the walls of the openings 12.
outof the draw-bar 2a `and, at its free end 'is provided'with a spear-head portion, consist,- ing of upper and lower vertical wings 15, having o'ppositely-beveled edges 15aV and two rovided with opp ositely-beveled frontedgesi 6a.
As shown in Fig. 1, plates 17 are secured to the meeting ends of the cars and are provided with brackets 18, recessed, as at 19, to constitute bearings for al transverse shaft. i' A ratchet 21 operated by a crank 22, is designed 25 are wound. One-of the chains is secured to the loop or eye 8 at the free end of the plate 426 of the coupling-link 11. Pawls 23 are designed to coact with the ratchets 21, and plates 24 are secured to said pawls.
In the ractical operation ofmy improved car-coup er as the cars come together the spear-head link 11, by means of its vertically and horizontally extending wings with their front beveled edges, will'accurately iind the opening in the end of the draw-bar 2 and enter the said draw-bar with the lowermost wing 15 riding over the beveled edge 4 and The link 1.1, as shown, projects forwardly 95 lto actuate the shaft over` which the chains f 6, and the other isconnected to a loop' or eye ,I

with the beveled front edge of the upperwing 15 riding upon the beveled edge 7 of the plate 6, and thereby tilting theouter end of the plate upwardly. As the link continues to move into the draw-bar 2 the wings 15 will finally pass into the openings 5 and 9, which will permit the plate 6 to drop to its normal locking position and will hold the two cars securely together by means ofthe spear-head end of the link 11 engaging the Walls of the said openings, as indicated in Fig. 1. To uncouple the cars, is is only necessaryto turn one yof the cranks 22. end of the plate, so as todisengage the latter from the upwardly-extending wing 1-5 of the link 11', andthen by the similar swingingl up ofthe other cord 25 the link 11 may be raised until its lower wing 15 is disengaged from the wall ofl the openings 5in the bottom of the draw-bar 2. Then the cars, as is manifest, will readily separate.
From the foregoingdescriptiomin connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided an improved construction of car-coupler which is automatic in its coupling operation and which will insure thecoupling of the cars automatically upon curves or under conditions vwhere one-draw-head is above the other by reason of the centeringl function of the spear-head endvof thelink 11.
Havingthus described-the invention, whatis claimed as new is-` 1. A car-coupler havingY incombinationv an endv arranged to. be locked in said two openings, a manually-operable cordor chain secured to the free end ofsaid hinged portionl to raise the same, and another manually-operable cord or chain attached to the link and arranged to lift the latter, the said two cords Thiswill raise the freeV being operatively connected to the two respective cars carrying said draw-heads.
2; A car-coupler having in combination two draw-heads, one of which is hollow and is provided with a hinged portion and with registering openings in its bottom and in said hinged portion, a link securedhto the other draw-head and arranged to be locked in said op enings, means for raising the hinged portion of nthe hollow draw-head, and independent means for liftingthe link.
3; A car-coupler comprising a hollow drawhead providedk with a hinged portion and with an opening in its bottom and also in said hingedportion, a link arranged to be detachably secured in another draw-hcad and provided at its attached end with a beveled lower edge 14, the said link being arranged to rock vertically on the said beveled lower edge and being provided at one end with oppositely-beveled wings designed to enter the first-named draw-head, whereby the hinged portion thereof may be automatically raised and the said wings'iind lodgment in the openings in said hinged portion and in the bottom ofthe draw-head.
4; A car-coupler having in combination two draweheads one of which is hollow and is provided with a hinged portion and with registeringI openings in its bottom and in said hinged portion, a link secured to the other draw-head and provided wi th an end arranged to be locked in said openings, a manuallyoperable cord or chain secured to the free end of said hinged portionto raise the samel` and another manually-o erable cord or chain attached to the link an arranged to lift the latter, as and for the pur )ose set forth.
.ln testimony whereof aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WESLEY SLAYDEN.
