P P'LIOATION FILED MA' R. a 1906;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. SPENCER. OTIS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNQRTOINATIONAL DUMP COMPANY, AUGUSTA, MAINE, A CORPORATION OF MAINE. i
i bUMP -CAR.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed March 1906. Serial No. 3 04.058
Patented June 19, 1906.
'o all whom it iitaylcortcern:
Be it known that I, SPENCER OTIS, a citizenof the United States, residing at Chicago,
in the countyof Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful 1m provements in Dump-Oars, of which the folowing is .a specification.
My. invention relates to dump-cars of the i type which has a bottom comprising hinged "videan' improved locking meansfor the dumping-doors, and has for itsfobject to produmping-doors which may not be tampered withyby any.unauthorized person. My invention consists in the combinations and details hereinafter described and claimed.
' r ln'thegaccompanymg drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse section of a ortion of a car, showing my invention app led thereto.- Fig.
2fi's an enlarged detail view of the locking device. Fig. 3 isa view .similar to Fig, 2
' viewed from the 0 posite direction. Fig, 4
the d'oor to open and close thesame. c and is an end view of t and 3.
In the accompanying drawings, (it indicates the dum' ing-door hingedto the center sill of a car. v is a 'bar movable longitudinally of d representcompound lever mechanism connected wan operating-shaft e for moving the bar I). f is a Wedge-track 'havin a-hor1zon-, tal end portion. f againstwhic the bar I) rests 'When the door is 111 closed position.
' Theseelements form no part of'my. present Invention.
'The transverse members .of .the car frameare provided with inclined metallic tracks g,
. having a lower horizontal portion 9 and an upper recess'ed portion 9 The operating bar 6 travelson .this track opening and closing the door, aswill' be readily understood.
When the doorisin closed pos1tion,"the bar .rests'in the recessed ortion g, and it is de-,
sira'ble to provide a H ,ocking device to-retain the bar inthis position. For this'dpurpose I provide a pivoted gravity latch or 0 pivfeted at h above-the lockih .-bar'w en the I shown in Figs '1 and 2, the tendencyof the gravity-latch h is to fall inward't'oward' the center of'the car! owing to the eccentric locarovidedat 72,
. latterji's in closed 'positi'c'inv an A wlth' a'recess "engaging the loc ring-bar. 'i
- tion of this'piv'ot h. To prevent this inward movement to. anyundue. extent, I- provlde a stop-pint. in the transverse members, It
- be understood'that by this construction positionshown in Fig. 2.
e parts shown in Figs. 2'
the operating-bar b as it ap teaches the lock ing-dog will lift the same s ightlyand cause the dog to 'ride over the operating-bar in the To securely lock the door in this position, I provide a lockin 7 pin 7:, which passes throu h perforations in the transverse frame of t e car and inthe upper end of the locking-dog, these perforations being in register when the partsarein locking position. This pin may be attached to the car-frame by a chain k and is provided at its opposite end with aperforationk for the reception "of an ordinary sealing devl'ce, such as is commonly used on rallroadcars. ,The locking-pm k serves to prevent any movementof the dog while the pin is in looking position, and. this pin after" the seal has been a plied can not be withdrawn with out breaking the seal, thus preventing the unauthorized operation of the dumpingdoorsf The operation of my invention will be readily underst'oodwithout further ,description. I claim-- 1 1 1. "A dump-car havinga bott m comprisin a hin ed door, means movab e longitudi na ly of the door to open and close the door, a track supporting the -door-ojmratin means, and a gravity-latch pivoted above the track and engaging the door operating' means when the door'is inclosed position. 2; A dump-car having a bottom compris ing a hinged dumping-door, means comprising a transversely-moving bar for operating the door, a latch pivoted to one of the trans verse members of'the car-frame 'and'eng'ag'ing' the bar for locking the door-operating"rrieans pering therewith.
3. Ina dump-oar, a n a bar movable longitudmally of t is oorto open and close the same, a track uponwliich said bar is supported, a gravity-latch pivoted above the track. and engaging the bar when the door 1s m closed 1)OS1i31911,SL1dl&tCh being IOVldQCl'wlth'fi-pelfOl'fltlOn. atone end, a
ocking-pin passin through the perforationwhen the door is inoperative position, and means for sealing the lock to-prevent tamhinged dum m t-door,
thereof and a simi ar registering perforation the car-frame.
