Toa/,ZZ tui/wm it vmay cion/cern; l
' Beit known that I, CHARLES FRANCIS HUN- TOON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, Illinois, have invented a certain knew and useiul Improvement in Brake- Beams,of which the following is a full, clear,
l V and exact description, such as will enable others skilled inthe lart to whichit appertains to make and usethe same, reference vbeing had to the accompanying drawings, form-y y .Inpartjof thisspeciiication, in which-' l Igure l'is a sectional view through the hendof the brake-beam, showing my improvediiller-block in osition. Fig. 2.is a sectional view on the ine 2 2 ofFig. l, and
Fig. l.
This
Iand a flat plate tension member, the end of the langed'compression member containing a thrust-blockin the form of a Jller which provides a 'seat Yfor the compression member, and around which thrust-block the end of the tension member may bebent' ina gentle curve, so as 'to avoid abrupt or 'sharp corners y at the end ofthe tension member.
In,the drawings, l indicates the compression member'of a brake-beam, said compression member being in the form of an I-beam, with its web arranged vertically when the beam is in service.
2 is a thrust-block, preferably formed hel-' leviT for the sake of lightness, which Y thrustblock liits within the innerlianges ofthe I? beam and iS provided with a Seat for the web of the I-beam, the "end of the thrust-block beingextended laterally over the flanges of the I-beam, which are preferably inclined, as
shown in Fig. `1.
4 is the tension member, whose end is bent l around the thrust-block and against the in-v clined end thereof, as shown.
5 is the socket in th brake-head, which is,
slipped over the parts and which serves to hold the end ofthe tension member in position.

invention relates to a new and useful Improvementv infbrake-beams, the object be-y ing to utilize a flanged compression memberv OF CHICAGO, ILLI- BRAYKE-BEAM. Y
Pateneeduue 19, 1906.
block arranged between the inwardly-eX-Y tending flanges of the I-beam and whose end overlaps said inwardly-extending flanges and lalsothe outwardly-extending ilanges of said I-beam, aitension member whose end is bent around said thrust-block, and a brake-head substantially as described.
2.1 In a brake-beam, the combinationwith an I-beam compression member whose web is vertically 'disposed, yof a thrust-blockarranged between the forwardly-extending flanges of said I-beam, the end wall of said thrust-block being inclined and providing a seat for the web and ilanges of said I-beam compression member, a `flat' plate tension member bent around said .thrust-block, and
a brake-head secured in position on the end of the beam; substantially as described.
3. In a brake-beam, the'combination with .an'I-beam compression member, of a thrust-.
block providing a seat for the end of said compression member and which thrust-block is extended inwardly between the forwardlyprojecting flanges of said compression member so as to provide a seat for the tension member, a tension member which is bent around said thrust-block, and a brake-head which is slipped in position on the end oi the beam for holding the bent end of said tension member in scribed.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aliiX my signature, in the presence oi two witnesses, this 20th day of February,- 1906.
