PATENT OFFICE...
WILLIAM ARTHUR HILDYAR-D AND ALEXANDER BROWN DRUMMOND, OF
. CROUCH" END, ENGLAND: i
DOOR CLOSER AND STOP.
Patented-June 19, 1.906.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WILLIAM ARTHUR HILDYARD and ALEXANDER BROWN DRUM- MOND, jewelers, subjects of the King of Great Britain, both residing at .40 Topseld Parade, Crouch End, in the county of Middle-v sex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Closers and Stops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device adapted for holding a door in the open position or for closing it, as desired. The invention is also applicable as a door-stop.' j
The device is composed of two parts, one in the-form of a keeper with a T-shaped slot, which is secured on the door.
plate secured to the door-post and terminating at its forward' end in a bent-over double shoulder having a central tongue, pin, 'or projection adapted to engage with the slot in the keeper. v
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation showing part of a door and door- `ostlwith our invention iitted thereto, and igs. 2 and 3 are respectively longitudinal and transverse sections taken on the lines 2 2 andv 8 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an end elevation showing the partsin the held-open position. Fig. 5 is abottom plan view of Fig. 1, and Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5.
The same parts are lettered to correspond In the drawings, ais thekeeper, having-a T-shaped slot a', and l) is the door to the back or rear side of which lthe keeper is secured by .the screws b or by other suitable means.
c is th oted to the base-plate d so that said arm c can only turn through a right angle or thereabout. The device thus acts as a door-stop.
e is the door-post, to which the base-platedy is secured by the screws e Ior by'other suitable .means fis a spring, which may be a coiled spring, as shown, or of any `suitable character and arranged so as to keep the arm c. down in the position shown in Fig. 2.
The forward end of the arm c is bent over and terminates in a double shoulder c c2, having a central tongue, p in, or projection c3,
which engages in the longitud-ina] part of the The other part 1s a spring-mounted arm pivoted to a basee spring-mounted arm, which is piv- Y T-shaped slot in the keeper, the first shoulder c acting as a stop preventing the forward end of the arm from passing into the longitudinal part of the slot. The transverse part or head a2 of the slot is wide enough to admit the thickened art c4 between the shoulders c and c2 on tile. downwardly-bent forward end of the arm c.
The parts-are arranged so that the central tongue, pin, or projection c3 is always engaged with the longitudinal part of the T- shaped slot a/ in the keeper a, the shoulder c resting on the top of said keeper. When the door b is opened sufficiently,y thehead a? of the T-shaped slot is engaged by the first -step or thickened part c4 between the double as the connection is only by contact the arm.
will be released by a slight push on the door in the direction of closing, whereupon the tongue c3 renters the longitudinal part of the slot a and the shoulder c again rests on the top of the keeper a and the arm then acts by the pressure of its spring to close the door the ordinary way. The spring-arm may be adjusted as desired by means of a set or other screw g, engaging a threaded hole in the base-plate d, carrying the arm c.
If desired, thek central tongue c3 and the longitudinal part a of the slot in the keeper a may be dispensed with, as their only function is to act as guides to causethe arm c to travel in a straight line to the transverse slot a2 in the keeper; also, the arm c may have a roller to beark on the keeper a, the latter being provided with a recess to receive it when the end of the arm c falls into the transverse slot c2; but we prefer the arrangement shown and described.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination'with a hinged door and i its post, of a device for holding open and closing said door comprising a keeper secured to the rear side or back of the door and provided with a slot, a base-plate secured to the reo door-post, an arm pivotally connected With l the arm has been disengaged from the slot in said base-plate and having at its forward end l the keeper, substantially as described. adoWnWardly-bent shouldered portion adapt- In testimony whereof We have hereunto ed to ride on the keeper during the openset our hands, in presence of two subscribing 15 ing of lhe doorhand lto dengage in th slot Witnesses, this 28th dayof April, 1905.
