UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ASHBEL P. BARLOW, OF ST. JOSEPH, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO PETER Gr. KNIEBES, OF BENTON HARBOR, MICHIGAN.
SURGICAL APPLIANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent Patented June 19, 1906.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, ASHBEL P. BARLOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, county of Berrien, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Surgical A pliances; and I do declare. the followin to l fe a full, clear, and exact description -0 the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to surgical a pliances for the treatment of diseases 0 the anus and rectum; and its object is to provide a device of simple construction for treating diseases of these parts and which can be easily applied.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation. Fig. 2 1s a sectlonal view of my improved devlce.
Referring'to the drawings, the appliance comprises a body open at its up er end and 7 having a head A and a cylindrica neck B, the head havin several series of holes a, the holes in eac series being in vertical alinement and the neck being similarly provided with several series of holes I), the holes in each series being in vertical alinement and the series of holes in the neck being arranged in staggered relation to the series of holes in the head. The body is provided with a centrally disposed core 0, which is bored throughout its len th to receive a screw-bolt D, the head (1 of this bolt being located at the extreme end of the head A. The upper end (1 of the screw-bolt is threaded to receive the nut d, and this nut bears against a plug E, which in turn clamps the pad F between itself and the upper open end of the body. This pad may consist of a spongeor any suit-- able soft material which can be saturated with lubricant or medicine. A cork G is rovided in the upper end of the body to hol the r lubricant or medicine in the body.
In using the device the body is charged with lubricant or medicine, and the cork is arranged in the upper end of the body to hold the charge in place. The pad is also saturated with the lubricant or medicine and arranged in place on the bolt a ainst the upper end of the body, and then t e plug is put on the bolt and the nut is screwed down to clamp the parts rigidly together. The lubricant or medicine will ooze out through the openings in the body against theaflected parts, and the arrangement of the holes provides for a thorough distribution thereof. The body forms a dilator which can be easily applied and which will remain in place until removed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the character described comprising a body provided with holes therein, a core extending through the body and bored throughout its length, a bolt arranged in said core, a pad, and means on the bolt for clamping the pad against the upper end of the body.
2. 'A device of the character described comprising a body open at its upper end and having a conical head and a cylindrical neck rovided with holes, a core within the body ored throughout its length, a bolt in said bore having 1ts head arranged at the apex of the conical head and its other end screwthreaded and projecting above the body, a
