Be it known that we, AL'VAH Pun and EDGAR WILBER PATE, of Nankin, in the county-of Wayne, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wagons; and we do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to improve, simplify, and cheapen the construction of all wheeled vehicles, where it is desirable or necessary to use springs.

In order to accomplish this object we construct a wagon or carriage with wheels A and axles B, of the ordinary construction. To the top of the axles B we attach, by means of proper clips, 0, the springs D, which' are of the form usually known to the trade as the C-spring. Instead, however, of employing these springs as they are usually employed, we reverse them, attaching the lighter end of the springs to the axles. These springs are built with several leaves, according to the weight to be imposed upon them. These leaves are of different lengths, and are all properly fastened together, withone end of each-leaf flush with the others. Each leaf is provided with a clip upon its edges, which grasps the next leaf upon the outside, thereby preventing the breaking or unequal action of the spring, by rigidly fastening the leaves together. By attaching the springs to the axles, as hereinbefore described, the thicker and heavier part of the spring is presented at the top, and' to the rear springs D" are attached the body E of a wagon, by clips F, or any other suitable device. Resting upon and attached by clips G, or otherwise, to the forward springs D, is the semicircular frame H, the rear part of which is sustainedby and rotates upon the friction-roller I, suitably journalled in hanger J, suspended from the centre sill of the body-frame. Surmounting this frame, and rigidly fastened thereto, is the circle K, upon the upper face of which works the fifth-wheel L, which is fastened to the bottom of the body-frame. A king-bolt, M, passes downward through the body-frame and the frame H, where it is secured by a suitable nut or key, thereby connecting the whole together. Any suitable pole or shafts may be attached to the front axle by any proper device.

By the construction of a wagon as above described, we claim that we are able to save the reach and its attendant and necessary braces, connecting it with the axles, thereby rendering our wagons much lighter and less expensive. By the arrangement of springs as above described, we gain greater elasticity, with far less strain upon the running parts of thewagon. I

What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The construction of a wagon or carriage, combining the springs D, body E, semicircular frame H, roller I, hanger J, circle K, fifth-wheel L, and king-bolt M, or their equivalents, with any suitable axles, B, and wheels A, when arranged, connected, and operating substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth,
